I've been remiss in not giving a "shout out" to Kathy's Dress Shop. I've been coming to Julian for…read moreabout 30 years and never came in here because - well, I guess I assumed it mostly had dresses. About 5 years ago, I was in Julian with girlfriends instead of my husband and we went inside. First of all, Kathy is such a sweet lady and so is the other gal with the small dog. They are both very nice and helpful! They have dresses, pants, tops, jackets, cute clocks up high, and some cute gift items. Through this shop, I was turned onto Jess & Jane brand tops, which I love (along with some other nice brands). Jess & Jane are often 100% cotton (yeah!) and are made in the USA (big applause). Every time we visit Julian (once or twice a year), I come in here and almost always find something. They also typically have a sale rack out on the front porch. They have a nice little dressing room so that you can try things on before buying. Check this place out on your visit!

By the time we got to Julian, I was a distraught mess since we only had less than an hour to find me a new ensemble. Kathy was so incredibly helpful. She found a very nice dress for me to wear and was even willing to hem it if necessary. Thankfully, it didn't come to that. She also helped me find a great necklace to go with my new outfit. I had already paid by the time I realized I didn't have earrings to match. Kathy gave me a pair of earrings to take with me. I just can't say enough good things about her. The outfit turned out to be better than the one I forgot at home. She really came through in a pinch, and I'll be forever grateful.

Can I point out that my inner Beavis would be proud that I used the word gash. Anyhow - back to the review. Jim did an amazing job of communicating expectations and being completely honest about what I could expect, and then went out of his way to schedule a visit out my way to check it out. Well, he showed up exactly when he said he would, and was super polite even though I'm a knucklehead and had him wait in his car for 15 minutes while I wrapped up a call. He was super friendly, got right down to business, and then gave me a very straightforward answer that made sense as to why he thought it was a bad idea to repair this particular gash. (that's three) What he told me made sense, and I appreciated his honesty. He could have easily gotten upset and then done something and charged me for it so as not to waste his time and energy, and I would have understood. Instead, he was direct and honest, and his reasoning was solid. I asked him what I could do for him, and he said nothing, shook my hand, and sped off to his next job. I know a lot of folks get on Yelp to whine about some bad experience they had. This is the second time in as many weeks that I have had an incredible experience with a small local business, I figured it deserved some sort of recognition. So Jim nailed it - set real expectations up front, was direct and correct about any changes, and was as friendly as a person could be. I was very cautious because they are a soft, nubuck type leather. She used as little product as possible and says they will soften over the next few months. Melony came over with a team and refinished our couches in one day! She used a technique that allowed the distressed look to still show. Ultimately, he was not only the best option time and price wise but even picked up my dining chairs and completed the project in half the proposed time. I had a really disappointing experience with Oscar Lara, despite having had a good experience with…read morehim previously. When my sectional needed to be reupholstered, I trusted his recommendation and paid $6,380. Oscar specifically recommended the fabric for my vacation rental and demonstrated how stains would roll off. Less than a year later, the fabric was showing significant staining. When I contacted Oscar, his solutions were for me to spend another $4,700 to reupholster the sectional or have the cushions dry-cleaned between every rental--an impractical option for a vacation rental with only a three-hour turnover. He took merely $90 of responsibility After I fully explained my concerns, he insulted me and then stopped communicating with me. I relied on his professional recommendation for a significant investment and expected both the fabric and customer service to live up to what was represented. Unfortunately, neither did. I'm sharing my experience so others can make an informed decision about whether Oscar's recommendations and customer service are right for their needs.

Although they did take longer than the original estimated time by several weeks. So I did have the scare that I wasn't gonna see my furniture again (after seeing "Jake K"'s comment from July 9). I think they were just really busy with jobs and had a lot of deliveries. They just delivered and everything looks fantastic. High quality work. Matched the original cushions exactly. I'm very happy with the result. And I'd hire them again next time I need to reupholster my patio furniture (or anything indoors). Just note that they might take longer than initial estimate, but for the price and service, it was worth the wait (It took 8 weeks instead of 4).
