After Gayle and I got hitched, I started to look for a Primary Care Physician on the Walnut Creek side of the Caldecott Tunnel. I had the same MD from the Alta Bates Medical Group for years, and that annual appointment was mostly a relaxed update on what was going on with my life (with an age 50 Exam in between). Over here in the WC and like Gayle, I wanted a Doctor who was affiliated with John Muir. And thanks to that list and very positive Yelp reviews, I decided to give Dr. Julia Hohman a try. From the get go, Dr. Hohman has been both collaborative and blunt regarding my state of health. The key messages I received were that my weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol needed improvement, and with a few B Vitamin shots thrown in for good measure. Gayle actually thinks that I'm in great shape, but the soft power of Dr. Hohman got my attention. Since the first appointment, I've dropped 7 pounds, given up donuts in the AM, worked along the edges of other food choices (like burgers and cheese), and have recommitted to my exercise regimen. And despite our honeymoon trip to Portugal, great food in Holland and Louisiana, and various Holiday goodies, things have been going very well (and without a Lipitor or similar prescription). My next appointment is in 6 months and it's still a long way to the top, if I'm going to rock and roll....But under Dr. Hohman's guidance (and despite my love of cheese), I'm cautiously optimistic. read more

I've been trying to get ahold of their office for months as my insurance says they are taking new patients. After 5 messages over 4 months I haven't once received a call back. Not to mention the 8 or so calls where I didn't leave a message. It's odd that no one ever picks up the phone. I'm over it. I like Dr. Hohman she's knowledgeable and very nice. However her time management skills needs improvement. Today I waited a half hour past my appointment time to get into a room. This is not the first time. My visit prior to this one I waited almost 45 minutes. Not sure if she's running behind or if her patients are. But it's really unfair to have to wait such a long period of time for such a short visit. Despite all this I really do think she's a great doctor. read more

Really bummed at how the service at Dr. Hohman's office has changed over the last few months. My son and I both see her but if things don't improve we may be looking for a new doctor. Every time I call I get "can you hold, 3 calls ahead of you". Sit on hold for 10-15 minutes. And in the past they could always fit us in within a few days. Now they are booked weeks out. But the final straw was at my last visit she was so busy she barely even looked at me. I have never felt so rushed. Didn't get to ask all of my questions. She saw me for maybe 8 minutes, and was typing into her e-tablet the whole time, barely looked up. Ran straight from my room to the next. Still a very nice person. Maybe this is just the norm in our pathetic health care system now. Kaiser is starting to look good, and cheaper. read more

A few things I want to make obvious so you can decided whether this doctor is for you or not. Pros: The inside of the office has a modern and "homie" feel to it. And honestly it's probably one of the only things that's nice about this office. Shaley, Donna, Maria, Wendy, and Destiny are very sweet ladies. Treat them well as they're probably the only advocates for the patients. Now let's talk about the cons. This office caters to the needs of white people, patients who make racist remarks aren't ever told anything by the doctors because duh, the doctors want to keep making money off of them. Also Dr. Hohman is possibly the fakest Doctor I've ever met, she only wants your money. Don't let her phony "nice" attitude fool you. You'll be waiting in the waiting room for awhile, just to meet with her briefly and she may not even address all of your questions or needs. Now let's move onto her medical assistant, Valerie. She is a very rude AND unprofessional MA. Her attitude is absolutely disgusting and foul. You ask her a simple question, and she treats you as if you're "stupid." Yet here she is working as an MA, oh the irony. She has also had explicit conversations with other employees several times when I was here. The fact they let people like this work here is appalling. Getting a new patient appointment is almost impossible, as you will be waiting a few weeks up to a few months, especially as a new patient. She does NOT accept NEW Medicare or Cigna patients, because it's too much "trouble" to add new patients who have these insurances, according to Dr. Hohman. The receptionists deal with the rudest people on the phone and they don't have enough people answering phone calls, checking in/out patients. Several employees only last here a few months which makes you wonder why is there such a high turnover rate? So, if you're looking for a place where you want to be treated well, respected and/or want a "family friendly" feel, look elsewhere, this place is not the place for you. There are sooo many better doctors in the area that WILL address your needs. read more

I called Dr. Hohman's office to see if I could switch to her as my PCP. Heather texted me back on Feb. 25: "Dr. Hohman will start taking on new patients the end of March going into April." I texted back on March 3, asking Heather to "please call me to schedule me a new patient visit in early April" and I switched my insurance to Dr. Hohman as my PCP. Heather had still not called me, so I called the office on March 9 and was told "Dr. Hohman is not taking new patients." I explained that Heather had said they could take me in early April but the receptionist said, "she is only taking on friends and family." Pathetic. Don't bother trying to see this doctor, who does not want new patients, and either does not communicate this to all her staff or the staff are incompetent and misleading people--either way, it's lame. read more

I was quite impressed at my first appointment at her clinic. I grew up going to Kaiser and when i found out my job didnt have Kaiser for their health insurance i was a bit devastated. Ew, this means i have to leave my comfort zone! The service at her clinic was wonderful! From the lady at the reception desk, to the nurses, and finally to Dr. Hohman, everyone was so sweet! i didnt feel like i was going to the Doctors office, but more like joining a family. Yeah, thats pretty corny, but this place is radiates what a real Family Practice clinic should be like. read more

I cannot say enough good, no, great things about Dr. Hohman. I echo the statements where Dr. Hohman takes time to actually listen to you, as the patient. I had seen Dr. Hohman 5 years ago, and was forced to switch when my then domestic partner signed me (and our family) up for MediCal/Healthy Families. I was thrilled to find out that Dr. Hohman was part of my employer's medical network (HealthNet), I dropped MediCal like a hot potato (and my ex, but that's a different story for a different time ;-). Dr. Hohman listened to my concerns with my bi-polar diagnosis 1 1/2 years ago. I explained that the medication I was taking was not doing a thing! She switched my medications, and they have made a tremendous difference! On a routine follow-up visit, I expressed some minor issues that didn't turn out to be minor at all! (Can you call severe Adult ADD Minor?) She put me on medication for my ADD, and this is the first time in my nearly 42 years where I can actually think!!! That sounds funny, but it's true. I can focus, get stuff done instead of doing 10,000 at once, finishing nothing, etc. I highly recommend Dr. Hohman for any health concerns you or your family may have. She is a rare find; a doctor who actually listens!!! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Hohman for 8 months now and she has tackled a variety of health concerns for me in that time. She focuses on me completely during my appointment. Each time she has been highly informed of my treatment options and explains them clearly, in conversational manner I can understand. She and her office use the latest technology in patient care and she has a staff with an advanced and broad range of skills to assist in my care. Her and her staff's follow up and attentiveness to my care makes me feel like she is interested in my health on a personal level and not just another insurance claim form number. She also has the rare skill of being comfortable in discussing and guiding care for mental health issues. It is a rare GP doctor, even in this day and age, that can converse easily in this realm. She is a good doctor but the office is unorganized. I had my annual physical a few weeks back with new insurance card and all was ok. Called last night for urgent need and was offered an appointment for next day at 11:30 am. When I got there I was told she doesn't take my new insurance so now I have to try to find an MD that accepts new patients and I have an urgent medical need. This is not how doctors should treat patients. read more

Dr. Hohman is part of the new age of Doctors, she has the background and skills to utilize modern medicine and all it has to offer. Her Sports Medicine background is a good adjunct to heath care. read more

I'm over 55, no particular health challenges just a little larger than I should be - very interested in at least maintaining if not improving my health through healthy life style management, especially exercise. Dr. Hohman's background in sports medicine is a plus to help craft the best path forward, one that is tailored for me. She is a non-judgemental expert partner who collaborates with me with great insight and recommendation. Her referrals for specialty services are excellent (i.e. eye doctor). Do not go with Dr Hohman if you need to get in to see her on short notice. You will wait at least a week for an appointment and good luck if you work and need times that work for your schedule. read more

I visited Dr. Julia Hohman a few times last year and this year for ulcer treatment, physical and other check ups. She was very helpful, straight forward and insightful. She also followed up with my treatments after work hour. Not a lot of doctors will call you after the office is closed to check in but she still does! She was very knowledgeable and was able to provide me with lots of useful information. As for the clinic, the rooms feel a bit cold and not too inviting. They should decorate the rooms with pictures or other things to give a little warmth. The front office is nice! If they can match the rooms like the office it'll be a lot better. read more

Dr. Hohman has been my doctor for over 10 years and whenever faced with changing insurance plans, I first check to see if she is on the new plans. Yes, she is booked because she is a good doctor. Would you really want to go to a doctor who has immediate availability? She is also very present when she steps into the room. She always looks me in the eye and answers all my questions. I never feel rushed and she has never been rude to me. I go to the doctor about 3-4 times a year. Her staff is very helpful and polite. Her office is ~20 miles from my home and I don't mind traveling the distance to see her. read more

I unfortunately cannot sing the praises of Dr. Hohman yet as others on here have. I have only had one appointment with Dr. Hohman. I had switched providers and I was assigned Dr. Hohman and she had made an appointment to see me. I thought it would be a physical but it was not - I guess she wanted to meet me and get some background info. All though I had an appointment, I waited 35 minutes in the waiting area and another 20 minutes in the room! I didn't find her very personable at all! She seemed to care more about typing into her little computer notebook than to listen to me. I understand she has to take information down but she was very distant. I felt as if I was a machine being checked in. I've read on here that she specializes in Sports medicine. I have suffered from low back pain for years. I am very athletic and she didn't mention any ideas for treatment or therapy that I could do. All she seemed to care about is how long it had been since I have had a tetnus shot which since I couldn't remember she gave me - I wanted to chop my arm off it hurt so bad! It didn't hurt for a little while either - it was hours!!! Now, I am having a problem that I really need to see the doctor for. I called and her less than polite receptionist - she seemed very annoyed that I was bothering her - said that the doctor was booked for the next two weeks! That was all she said. She didn't give me any options or anything. I had to say that I was still a fairly new patient and that I didn't know what my options were. She sighed heavily and gave me the number for Urgent Care. At this point I would not recommend Dr. Hohman and her clinic. read more

I have been seeing Dr Hohman for 5 years now. The last year or so I feel that the level of service has been going downhill. When I first started seeing her, they could fit me in within a few days, her appointments were on time and she spent a reasonable amount of time with me during my appointment. However, the last three appointments I have had with her she has been between 45 minutes and 1h late with no apologies and the second time it happened, I timed the amount of time she spent with me. It was 4 minutes, and most of the conversation occured as she was standing up and walking towards the door. 5 years ago I would have given her a 5, but now I am looking for a new primary health care provider. read more

Beware of this office!!!! I saw Dr. Hohman twice for simple procedures and was overcharged each time with excessive "office visit" fees. After several attempts to reach the billing admin, (she takes lunch from 1-2 and leaves at 3pm), I finally spoke with her and she was immediately rude and offensive when I pointed out the billing error. Beware of this office, there are plenty of good providers out there, don't waste your time here. read more

My mother and father have gone to Dr. Hohman for years, and as they are aging (they are both in their mid-80's), I have begun to go to their appointments with them. I have been impressed and grateful to Dr. Hohman for her ability to listen, her concerns for me as a daughter, and her compassion and intelligence. I was also amazed at her computer, which allows her to not only take notes, but check test results at other facilities as she sits and talks. Before I go into my review here is a brief account of my medical/professsional background. I was a professional mountain guide (70's-80's) with paramedic training, wilderness first responder training (WFR), search and rescue (yosemite), on line study of medical info from the Mayo Clinic/John Hopkins univ.med center, etc .and to date over 30 years of backcountry travel both summer/winter including 12 winter trips on Mt. Shasta and 31 years working at REI- Berkeley! I have appeared on Channels 2,4,5,7,36 and on Radio KYA, KFRC, KCBS Newstalk radio, and NPR and have worked with authors on backcountry related books and have done public speaking for over 25 years! Due to diabetes (previous DR. didn't catch it!) I am now disabled and in a wheelchair. When I first met Dr. Hohman she ran the standard blood tests plus an A1C (diabetes) test. but the damage was already done! She is the one who diagnosed me and started the appropriate meds plus addressed vitamin shortages! Due to her diagnoses and immediate action, she may have saved me from losing digits/limbs/eyesight, etc. I have read the reviews of her on Yelp and those who are bothered by her using her E-Pad then you might want a DR who gets your file out of a cabinet circa 1980! Everything is at her fingertips from all your tests, results from other Dr.s you see, meds, etc. I feel Dr. Hohman is very professional, caring and right to the point (for a reason, paying attention now?). Due to diet changes me/her, I no longer need B12 shots and all my vitamin numbers have bounced back! So in summary, if you want a caring professional Dr. and who is current and gets right to the point (if you want sugar coating go to the bakery!) then I recommend her highly.
