You might be like me, at the beginning of my pregnancy wondering... What's the difference between the different locations... Where should I go? Who should I see? A CNM (certified nurse midwife...) what's that? And, shouldn't I see a OBGYN Doctor, not a CNM?
Judith was our nurse/midwife. If I had it all to do over again I would choose Judith. By chance we made our first appointment and were scheduled with Judith. What a lucky chance! Informed, relaxed, caring. I can't imagine a better person to have guided us through the pregnancy. Our first appointment was at Parnassus, but afterwards we saw Judith at the Daly City site which we much preferred. The moment I met her all my questions about seeing a CNM or a OBGYN doc vanished. There was no sacrifice in care or knowledge whatsoever, in fact having dealt with several docs and CNMs over 2 hospital stays I would choose a CNM again. It's a little difficult for me to explain why exactly, but here's the best I can do: I always felt I was getting the best medical care possible, but I often felt that the CNMs were more available and more present. That's not across the board, there were some really wonderful docs (residents especially) too, but I am not sure that you'd see them for your care leading up to birth.
When you do deliver, there is no guarantee that your midwife or OB doc will be on your delivery team. Judith let us know this well in advance, and while we had hoped she'd deliver us we were assured and felt confident that the team that delivered our baby would be the right team for the job. It ended up that Judith didn't deliver us, although she did give me a call in labor and delivery (which is very representative of the caring and thoughtful healthcare provider she is) the team was indeed great and was the right team for the job.
As for location: In the day to day care leading up to baby's arrival, and then continuing gynecology care after baby I prefer and can't recommend UCSF Womens Health in Daly City enough.
Here's why: Crystal, Marie, Evelyn, Judith. It's the wonderful women and care they provide in Daly City. They know your name when you walk in the door, they remember what happened last appointment, they are kind/caring/friendly. Crystal, Marie, and Evelyn are always happy to help in any way possible. Also... Did I mention that they are always SO friendly and wonderful to see?
Had my baby with UCSF at the shiny new Mission Bay campus. Great place to have a baby, for so many reasons. A few being: 1) all of the medical professionals there were great, fantastic bedside manner from the vast majority of medical professionals (I saw at least 40 over my 2 stays between nurses and docs), 2) it's one of the best hospitals in the country, 3) it's one of the best children's hospitals in the country should your little one need it, 4) they have nitrous oxide, as a pain management option, and are one of the only hospitals west of the Mississippi to offer it, and 5) it's shiny and new.
A few extra deets: The Daly City location is easy to get to, easier in ways than Parnassus and Mission Bay because there is free parking very close to the building. I had several appointments at Mission Bay leading up to our little one's arrival... You can find street parking but it's a hike, and the lot/garage parking adds up quickly if you have frequent visits towards the end of your pregnancy. This can't be helped always, sometimes you have to go to Mission Bay. Mission Bay, just in the nature of being a big medical campus is more of a machine, and can be more of a hassle. For me Daly City was always easy and friendly. read more
