I had been suffering from insomnia since I was a pre-teen. As I aged, it deteriorated to the point that three hours a night was my usual pattern. Drugs, marijuana...nothing helped. I read the article about behavior therapy in the Times and I picked Dr. Tal just because he had a good review and was nearby. The first couple of weeks were a struggle. But he had said something important, which, at the time, seemed inconsequential. He gave me permission to not worry about not sleeping. As time went on, he gave me another piece of advice. The bed was only for sleeping and sex. If I were to wake up in the middle of the night, I should get out of bed and read till I felt sleepy. That permission not to worry, the simple trick of getting out of bed, and the exercises began to work like a charm. But I wasn't totally over the hump yet. Finally, we had a disagreement about something and I was about annoyed and thought about quitting. His response to my disagreement was so amazing. I had never met a therapist who was so thoughtful and kind, who respected me like that. So I decided to stick with him, because of the respect he showed me and because I had started to made some progress. . That did it!! I started sleeping longer stretches. When I woke up too early, I got out of bed and read. I never lasted more than 15 minutes awake. It was like a train gathering steam. I began to sleep soundly and longer, began to dream again. I now to sleep around 7 hours a night, with occasional nights of 8 to 10 hours. This has lasted over a month. Somehow, the simple things he suggested worked. But it was clearly his thoughtfulness and skill which make this journey successful. Of course, I still have an occasional hard night. But they occur very infrequently. I didn't find Dr. Tal's program worked for me. He is more of a coach. He tried to challenge my notions of sleeping, and he tried to push when I went to bed to crazy late times, which did not help my insomnia. We discussed a few aspects of sleep, most of which you can read in "Why We Sleep" Very useful reading if you are having issues with sleep. In the end I saw a dr who can prescribe, and then I was able to taper off the prescription to nothing, and I can now fall asleep naturally and stay asleep. Sleep is a lot about what you believe you can do, and what you believe are your limitations. For me, I was able to identify my anxiety and now I am much better. read more

Insomnia is truly one of those challenges that can seem impossible to address when you're in the worst of it - particularly when it becomes a regular part of your life. Somehow, Dr. Tal's approach to treating insomnia is able to systematically deconstruct all of the contributing factors that perpetuate the problem in the first place, leaving you with an entirely new perspective on sleep, a toolkit of strategies that you can use in the future to avoid relapsing, and most importantly, drastically improved overall sleep. Although I worked with him for around 3 months, our sessions became less frequent as I built confidence in my ability to manage the issue independently. It was hard to cut back though because on top of helping with anxiety around sleep, our sessions were always a highlight of my week. Just remember that your insomnia won't be cured overnight - it takes time to reprogram your thinking and you will likely have some bad nights here or there (even after CBT). That said, you will know how to manage them so they won't become a constant issue. All in all, if you're struggling with sleep, Dr. Tal will make a positive difference for you guaranteed. I went to Dr. Tal suffering with a severe case of insomnia that had lasted for years. I wasn't sure he could help me (in fact, it seemed unlikely), but he worked his magic and five sessions later, my insomnia is history! Without sleeping pills, I am now falling asleep in around 15-25 minutes and when I wake up in the middle of the night, I tend to fall back asleep in around 10 minutes (occasionally, I am up for an hour, but no longer do I have those awful 3-hour stretches of sleeplessness at 2 in the morning!). CBT-I is a brilliant modality that works, but the biggest reason my work with Dr. Tal was so helpful was, simply, Dr. Tal himself! He has a great sense of humor and an easy manner that instantly made me feel comfortable. He is very clear when teaching CBT-I, but it never feels like a lesson. He used situations in my life to teach the basic tenets of CBT-I, rather than listing a set of instructions that he had rehearsed. He also made it clear that he was there to support me whenever I needed him, which was helpful as I ventured into these initially anxiety-producing waters. I met with him mostly in person, but once (very effectively) through teletherapy. I put off calling a sleep therapist for far too long and suffered the consequences. The process was not only effective, but enjoyable. I highly recommend Dr. Tal if you're struggling with sleep; now is the time to get help! read more
