Bought a beautiful (large) labradorite for a very good price. Lesson learned - put in your checked bags! They almost confiscated at airport security out of carry-on because it could be thrown. I had to go back out of security, buy an expensive bag to hold my beautiful stone and then check it. Made it home no problem, but costly! It was worth it. It is clear that Alan has a real passion for his work, and he spent a lot of time explaining the history and tradition that inspire him. He answered all of our questions and we ended up with some prints that we absolutely love and that will bring us fond memories of Howth for years. This studio is a must for anyone looking for authentic, original prints and a relaxed, no-pressure atmosphere.

Nestled down the back alley of the ever-characterful Synge St, it's completely out of eye sight of any passing bodies, masquerading as one of the garages that surrounds it. Once you're inside, it opens up tenfold in volume, into a contemporary light filled space that extends well back, out and up! The Gallery shop offers an extraordinary range of artistic memorabilia and fine-art hardbacks. Excellent quality gallery guides and publications such as '1854-2004 The Story of the National Gallery of Ireland', 'Samuel Beckett, A Passion for Painting', and one I recently bought entitled 'Harry Clarke's Illustrations for Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tales' are stocked in abundance. The shop also does well to supply really superb art prints and posters ranging from custom prints, canvas prints and small replica prints of the popular paintings displayed within the gallery. The shelves are crammed with awesome art books including those on the topic of Art History together with art inspired fiction such as Sue Roe's 'The Private Lives of the Impressionists', or A.S Byatt's 'Still Life', which I recently purchased. It doesn't stop there either with hardbacks about architecture such as Phaidon publications (well, this wouldn't be a gallery nor museum shop without this name making an appearance in the realm of books concerning the 'visual arts') like 'The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture Travel Edition' amongst others included in the extensive range of stock. However, it's the 'Irish Art and Architecture' hardbacks that really enliven the senses, the cheapest costing a whopping €55. S.B Kennedy's 400 page, 15''x15'' hardback entitled 'Paul Henry - Paintings, Drawings and Illustrations' would illuminate any coffee table. As Ireland's greatest 20th century landscape painter he is featured heavily in the gallery and this carries through to the gifts on offer within the shop. Not only are there books dedicated to his masterpieces as explained but pencils, pens, postcards and more besides all featuring his works of art are available to buy. These gargantuan books really are as striking as their price would suggest. 'Ireland's Painters 1600-1940', for example priced at €60.00 offers one of the finest richly illustrated surveys of the history of 'the' Irish painting (that expertly encompasses the entire span from the middle ages to the mid-20th century) that I have ever seen. Stationery and gifts, calenders and diaries all featuring replicated images of the paintings displayed within the gallery align the shelves in abundance. A chock load of postcards and stationery featuring the gallery's most famous paintings such as Caravaggio's 'The Taking of Christ', Frederick William Burton, 'Meeting on the Turret Stairs' and Rembrandt's 'Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt' cram the shelves. Moving away from this seeming refined stockpile and things directly affiliated with art, the shop also stocks more light-hearted products that are irrelevant in light of fine art but maintain a creative edge concurrent with everything the shop stocks. This includes a pair of Freudian slippers, magnets of Munch's 'Scream' amongst other humorous items. A wonderful shop chocked full with goods that are as cultured as they are entertaining. Anytime I have ever gone in there with friends no one has ever come out empty handed despite no initial intentions to buy anything, which only pays homage to the appealing goods on offer.

I recently found out about The Healing Room in Donabate. It's close to where I live, and I wanted…read moreto try a Reiki session here. I emailed the owner (Emily) and scheduled an appointment for a Friday morning. She has a Reiki studio here and one in town as well. So if you want to get a Reiki session at either one make sure to email or call ahead for an appointment. Anyway I'd done Reiki back home in Canada, but hadn't gone for Reiki since moving to Dublin over a year ago. The studio is a small one room cabin behind a house in Donabate. There isn't an address, but it's easy to find on Google Maps. There's a sign on the nearby house at the end of the road of Middlefield Lane. If you're coming from the Donabate train station it's a 5 minute drive (or 30 minute walk). There's a 33b bus stop on the R126 before Middlefield Lane. The 33b goes from Swords to Portrane via Donabate (and vice versa). The room itself was very cosy. There was some incense burning, but I didn't find it too overpowering. There's a bed that you lay on of the session. Before that I sat down at a table and chair and talked to Emma (the practitioner) about what I was looking for. I said I'd been feeling tired and drained, even with not a lot going on in my life, and wanted to work on that. She asked a few medical questions (about medication I was on, any health problems, etc). She was friendly and open and easy to talk to. I went on the bed (like a medical cot) and laid on my back. Emma put a blanket on me, for some reason people get cold during Reiki sessions (me included). Reiki is a touch therapy, although some Reiki practitioners won't lay their hands on you, but will kind of hover their hands above the area. Emma did touch, but it was gentle. Funny enough different parts of my body would start tingling before she did anything. Like before she went to work on my head my scalp started tingling. Reiki is noninvasive and you're completely clothed during a session (unlike say getting a massage), so it's great for pretty much anyone. It's considerd a complimentary healing modality (meaning still go to the doctor, but you can use reiki to help you out with what's going on in your life). I always feel really refreshed after a session. How one person feels during and after reiki is completely different and it varies from sessions to session. In some sessions I feel colours (which sounds very hippyish, but I'm not sure how else to describe it). Even if you don't feel or sense the same things I did it's still helpful. They say Reiki works whether you feel anything or not. Emma was very professional, and quite intuitive. I know she offers angel card readings and counselling that you can do in conjunction with the Reiki. After the session she pointed out some things that she wouldn't have been able to pick up from just looking at me, and nothing I'd mentioned before. Stuff about me personally, my family, and a health issue (nothing major) I'd suffered from a couple weeks back that I forget to mention at the start. I was quite impressed with this, and moreso impressed with the resources she gave me after the session. It cost €60 for a session, which I felt was a great price. I'll probably wait until after the new year for another session, but I definitely want to go back here again. Emma was great, and I'd highly recommend her if you're looking to try Reiki for yourself.

Since we were going to be in Dublin, we had to visit jameson and do a tasting. I'm a single and legal girl, so we opted for the redbreast tasting. Plus the hubby adores redbreast 12. The tasting was fun. Tho I think I had tried all but one or two of the offerings. The PX I bought back home when it was on sale at Costco. Surprisingly, it was cheaper there then here. We had the last time slot that Mon, so there wasn't much time to do anything else afterwards. We walked thru the shop and left. So if you want to explore, I'd suggest going earlier since they closed shortly after our tasting was over. Our second visit was for purchasing and trying an irish coffee. The hubs went to buy the items while a friend and I grabbed some coffees. I'm not into sweetness in my coffee at all, so I asked them to make it without any syrup/sugar. It was nice. I got the sweatshirt as a momento. It is on the longer side (I'm 5'8"), so keep that in mind if you are shorter than me. We ended up buying a few bottles of the crested to bring home since we were told you can't get it back in the US. Fun experience. As a whisky fan, a must do. REVIEW #4114
