Chef's Depot - Inside the store

Chef's Depot

Chef's Depot sells food and supplies for restaurants and caterers but it's open to the public. It's…read morea bit like a Costco Business Centre, but no membership needed. I like that in addition to huge items such as 50 pound bags of flour, they have normal sized items too, like 355ml bottles of sauces, and you can buy just 1 bottle, you don't have to buy a case, lol. They had Torani syrups for $8.98 a bottle (and you can buy just one bottle). They had root beer flavour, which I hadn't seen before. They also had Peach, Pineapple and Strawberry Crush, as well as Strawberries and Cream Dr. Pepper and a few other exotic Dr. Peppers too. Those were $11.99-$12.99 for a case of 12 cans (I wanted to buy just a can of each flavour, but they are only sold by the case and I didn't want 12 cans of the same flavour, lol). They had huge woks and pots that you'd definitely need a commercial kitchen to use. They also had takeout containers, bags, gloves, hairnets, etc. Really cool store. Prices are similar to Costco. It looks like a warehouse, so it's not aesthetically pleasing in there, but I didn't expect it to be. The walk-in freezer freaked me out a bit, what if you walked in and someone locked you in there? I've watched too many episodes of CSI, haha. Anyway, if you always wanted to go to Costco but didn't want to pay the membership fees, you can check out Chef's Depot ;) Lots of free parking in the plaza parking lot.

I Set up there Ottawa location for the company Toronto management very Toxic they give opportunity based off Prejudice personal views first not professional, they talk trash about staff/customer base, other religions, staff members wife's cause of their views no basic respect or gratitude for the business they get, zero safety standard banged my foot there saying don't do "incident reports" they operate a lift u need a license for not having one, will belittle you an take advantage of everything you do giving opportunity or training to people based off prejudice views first and they end up leaving the company its unprofessional joke, just taking advantage of the government kick back on wages by hiring certain people and screwing everyone else. Worked at there Ottawa location for 3 years took over there sales floor changed 90% of it setting up there store for the company, covered an fixed everything all pricing/items not in the system, merchandising issues made that store function for the longest time. Was kept on the side the whole time even when they did the initial change of chemicals I was already doing everything at that point an the Toronto management did the walk with the manager and a buddy of the company who was hired for only a few weeks to help them out, I was working that day ended taking over a day later having to call Toronto management cause the manager told me to call them after that I did the rest of the store pretty much doing everything covering the whole floor, a lot of customer service and all the trucks I unloaded Ambient/freezer even transfers or store maintenance you name it I covered and fixed it all. Having to bud in all the time to help them out for the store to function, I had ask for all my raises and promotion they gave me floor supervisor and found out somebody already had it who knew the owner. I worked 2x to 3x harder compared to everyone else to get that position it was fake found out they would make fun of fact he had that position probably me too when they gave it to me. The floor supervisor position got no training or opportunity in the company got to a point where I called Toronto management to see if I had a actually future in the company, was intentionally verbally attacked with the most ignorant distain and disrespect you could imagine, mocking my position bringing up how that staff member already had the position and it meant nothing just trying to trigger me so he could fire me knowing they brought in others and could take advantage of everything I did instead of getting me involved like I earned and having me there a fair amount of time a week 6/7 days so I could do things properly not being on overdrive for them all the time too keep the store going and being takin advantage of. Immediately after that Toronto management put staff in departments to push me out brought in staff from Toronto also, when he brought in the first one they walked in an I was walking out to do something he starred me down with the most pathetic look you could imagine like you're screwed looking at a angle so the new staff couldn't see, even after all that I still finished the rest of the theme/setups I had planned and helped the new Manager fix all the main inventory problems that were in the system he was forced into the situation I don't blame him. Made multiple HR complaints all got ignore they just condone what the management does and protects them, no safety standard either company is very bias there's no earning you way.

Recently discovered this store and it is so cool. It's a kitchen supply store that has things for…read moreyour home, but also restaurant sized things (they had a huge wok that I could sit in, and a salad spinner the size of a window air conditioning unit). They also have chefs' uniforms and hats. Good if you're a real chef or if you want to dress up like a chef for Halloween, or for any other reason, lol. They had lots of Japanese Bento boxes, and some of those metal containers that Indian restaurants use to serve Thali. Lots of bamboo steamers too. They had beautiful lacquer boxes shaped like fish and boats that are used to serve sushi as well. The place is bright, clean, and neatly organized. I'm pretty sure it's a family run business because the couple (probably the owners) had their baby in a Jolly Jumper-like device behind the cash register (the baby was super cute by the way). Service was friendly. If you're looking for some kitchenware, give this place a try. Some of the more exotic and unusual things are expensive, but regular items are very reasonably priced. The store is in a strip mall, so there's lots of free parking. It's in the same strip mall as the newly opened Giant Tiger.

To keep it brief: * I saw an item on their website for which suppliers in US were out of stock * I placed order & PayPal converted the US dollars to Canadian currency * I get email from WKS that the item is actually out of stock...refund is issued * I get email from PayPal saying a fee of $8 was being assessed by them * WKS's website didn't say "out of stock", so WKS also refunded me the fee So, even though WKS didn't have to, they wanted to make it right by reimbursing me, a fist time customer, for the PayPal fee (which should have technically been absorbed by PayPal for an online sale that never actually took place). I will gladly buy something from this fine company in the future! Don P. Nov '22 Texas

Cora - The full breakfast

Had brunch here this past Sunday with friends before heading to Gatineau park to cross country ski…read more Having been to Cora restaurants many times in Ontario, we were looking forward to a substantial and tasty breakfast. We were a group of 4 and arrived around 11:30 am. The restaurant was busy but not packed, and we were quickly seated in a booth. Our hostess spoke both English and French with French being her default. We were a little concerned that we would have trouble since we don't speak French, but we were pleased they had both French and English menus. Our server also spoke French as his default, and to each one of our orders and/or questions, he replied first in French and then in English - it was easy to see he did not speak English that well, and the area where we were seated was also noisy, so he had to ask us to repeat our orders. We were all concerned he would get something in the order incorrect. We ordered the following: -- The Adam - eggs your way, with French toast/waffle smothered in a white cream, a chocolatey-looking drizzle and bananas, and breakfast potatoes and bacon. The eggs were a little dry, and the sweet part of the breakfast was sugary but not really flavorful (owing in part to the fact that the bananas were under ripe). The dish was also lukewarm, like it had been sitting. -- Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon - this was tasty, but the English muffin was raw/not toasted and the entire dish was cold. By the time it arrived the restaurant was more busy though, and we had places to go, so I did not send it back. The fruit salad that came with this dish looked great but all of the fruit was under ripe. It is the middle of winter, but the melon and banana were HARD, and the strawberry was totally white inside. -- Chorizo ham skillet - this was basically a dish of potatoes with an egg on top. Very little sun dried tomato, no mushrooms and the slices of chorizo were more like pepperoni. We also did not see any ham. This was warm/of appropriate temp. -- A plate of two eggs over easy, bacon and breakfast potatoes - this was just a regular breakfast and everything was as expected. -- Two maple lattes - we received regular unsweetened lattes instead (probably our server did not catch the 'maple' part of the order) and were charged for the regular lattes (not the up charge for the maple lattes) -- Wheat toast was ordered all around and they brought us a basket of white toast - unbuttered - no jam/jelly and no butter Overall, a disappointing experience. In truth, we haven't been to a Cora since prior to covid/corona virus, and it could very well be that the combination of supply chain issues, dead of winter (lack of access to proper/ripe fruits), and lack of staff, all impacted this experience.

Very underwhelmed with this spot. Slow service despite a lack of customers and my waffle was…read morecompletely cold. Others at my table said various parts of their food was cold as well... so did they just simply forget to bring it out when it was ready? The fruit was good but everything else was cold and lacking. Very pricey for a disappointing breakfast as well. Overall I'd recommend you skip this place.

Ok, The Wholesale Outlet is a strange little place. It's in what looks like a converted barn (!)…read moreThe parking lot (which it shares with The Apple Saddlery) is unpaved and full of potholes. When you go inside, everything is really messy and it looks like a warehouse. The back of the store is really poorly lit. So you would expect really low prices and great deals, right? Well, every clothing item hovers around the $100 mark. Now they do specialize in clothing from Canadian and European designers, and many of their items are made in Canada or in a European country, so yes, the quality is higher. However, with a name like "The Wholesale Outlet" I really was expecting lower prices. In my opinion, the majority of their items are rather dowdy, unless you are in your 8th decade of life, in which case, you would be considered a fashion plate if you wore these items. HOWEVER, if you have the time and patience to sort through their stuff, you will find some lovely gems. I have only ever purchased skirts here, and only in the clearance section at the back of the store, where everything is 50% off (but poorly lit and items are tightly packed together - my arms often hurt after pulling all the items apart to look at them on the racks). Now to give you an idea of my style, I love asymmetric hem lines, over-sized buttons, and superfluous zippers, so I'm a huge fan of the skirt styles from French, German and Scandinavian designers. The sizing of items here is a little strange. Yes, some are European sizes, but even that I found not to be consistent. I'm pretty much a North American size 2 (sometimes 0), so typically a European 36 or 38 and a UK/Australian 6 or 8. However, here I've tried on a "European 40" and a "Canadian 6" and couldn't zip up either item :P So the take home message is, if you like something, disregard the sizing, just eyeball it and if it looks like it might fit, try it on. If you are under 50 years old, you will likely be the youngest person in the store. The staff here are very nice and friendly. I don't come here often, but I will pop in once in a while to check things out.
