Had brunch here this past Sunday with friends before heading to Gatineau park to cross country ski. Having been to Cora restaurants many times in Ontario, we were looking forward to a substantial and tasty breakfast.
We were a group of 4 and arrived around 11:30 am. The restaurant was busy but not packed, and we were quickly seated in a booth. Our hostess spoke both English and French with French being her default. We were a little concerned that we would have trouble since we don't speak French, but we were pleased they had both French and English menus.
Our server also spoke French as his default, and to each one of our orders and/or questions, he replied first in French and then in English - it was easy to see he did not speak English that well, and the area where we were seated was also noisy, so he had to ask us to repeat our orders. We were all concerned he would get something in the order incorrect.
We ordered the following:
-- The Adam - eggs your way, with French toast/waffle smothered in a white cream, a chocolatey-looking drizzle and bananas, and breakfast potatoes and bacon. The eggs were a little dry, and the sweet part of the breakfast was sugary but not really flavorful (owing in part to the fact that the bananas were under ripe). The dish was also lukewarm, like it had been sitting.
-- Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon - this was tasty, but the English muffin was raw/not toasted and the entire dish was cold. By the time it arrived the restaurant was more busy though, and we had places to go, so I did not send it back. The fruit salad that came with this dish looked great but all of the fruit was under ripe. It is the middle of winter, but the melon and banana were HARD, and the strawberry was totally white inside.
-- Chorizo ham skillet - this was basically a dish of potatoes with an egg on top. Very little sun dried tomato, no mushrooms and the slices of chorizo were more like pepperoni. We also did not see any ham. This was warm/of appropriate temp.
-- A plate of two eggs over easy, bacon and breakfast potatoes - this was just a regular breakfast and everything was as expected.
-- Two maple lattes - we received regular unsweetened lattes instead (probably our server did not catch the 'maple' part of the order) and were charged for the regular lattes (not the up charge for the maple lattes)
-- Wheat toast was ordered all around and they brought us a basket of white toast - unbuttered - no jam/jelly and no butter
Overall, a disappointing experience. In truth, we haven't been to a Cora since prior to covid/corona virus, and it could very well be that the combination of supply chain issues, dead of winter (lack of access to proper/ripe fruits), and lack of staff, all impacted this experience. read more
