I first saw Dr. Katz in the middle of 2017, after tests from another neurologist in the Sutter health system. She was nonchalant and I believe she wanted to confirm her findings and analysis. I admired her desire to confirm what she suspected, instead of a premature diagnosis . I told her 'experts' have nothing to learn, and I appreciated her humility. When I met Dr. Katz, we (my serivce dog and I) were waiting in the examination room. My dog is uncannily excellent at immediately assessing wheather someone is trustworthy or a potential threat, and lets me know based on the level of his alarm. Previous stories of his exploits would amaze, and when Dr. Katz entered the room, my dog picked up his head and looked at Dr. Katz like he was a known and trusted friend, and had met him already; indeed. I have never had anything but good experiences with any of my care through the Sutter health system, and Dr. Katz was and is no different. We have had a great rapport from the beginning. After two sets of tests weeks apart, he gave me the news that I have ALS. He didn't sugar coat it (the way I prefer it), but clearly it was not something he wanted to tell me. I had told him prior to this that I had prepared myself for the worst, and anything less than that would be a pleasant surprise. He spent about a half hour with me AFTER giving me the diagnosis, asking me about my plans and who I would be telling of my diagnosis and a sublime, but understated heartfelt support. His manner and concern was indeed an indicator of his humanity and his humility. I have read some of the other reviews and wonder if they have seen another neurologist by mistake! When I see Dr. Katz here in Sacramento, from the time I walk in, I am treated with consumate professionalism and compassion. If I had to find a complaint, the exam rooms in San Francisco can get rather warm, but that part of the building's last century infrastructure, but that isn't a complaint, just an observation. read more

My appointment was horrible, I came in to get some guidance on some symptoms and doctor was not approachable and slouched saying "if you feel those symptoms again call us" and I told him that I was already referred because of symptoms but that was it. This man made my life a living nightmare. I went in with numbness in left arm and left leg after a weight lifting accident. And then a car accident. He said my issues were psychiatric in nature even though I was having severe low back and neck pain and right sided facial drooping. He did not order any imaging. He said I needed severe in patient psychiatric monitoring and to have psychotic interventions for delusional beliefs about my condition. During his physical exam he hurt me as well and aggravated the low back issue. He has destroyed my life. I can not get help as his note gets copied and pasted throughout the internet. Had a follow-up appointment after I demanded to review my abnormal NCS-EMG results that he failed to disclose two months ago. Confirmed his incompetence and negligence - for peripheral nerve injuries, you really need to avoid Dr. Katz: 1 - He said he didn't verbally disclose the foot nerve damage evident on my NCS-EMG because it didn't match my clinical symptoms... except it did exactly, as I had mentioned to him the day we did the NCS-EMG. Then he tried to backtrack by saying these results need to be taken with a grain of salt because those nerves are hard to capture. Then why were they part of the test? 2 - He admitted the most condemning part of my NCS-EMG report, which showed weakness in a foot muscle that can lead to a very bad condition called foot drop, was a typo. What - how is that possible? And how can the many other doctors using this report to get to a diagnosis trust it if it's not accurate? Of course, his clinical notes summarizing our visit failed to mention this oversight. 3 - WORST part. At the end, he did a manual check of my hurt foot. This included pressing way too hard and squeezing it in a way as to imitate the nerve compression injury, which then lead to the return of numbness in my big toe, a symptom I hadn't had in three weeks, after carefully staying off my foot. Why on earth would any doctor squeeze someone's foot that had a nerve injury? For any peripheral nerve injury, you can't afford to see someone that is this incompetent and cares so little about these types of injuries and patients in general. I'm going to UCSF's Peripheral Nerve Clinic and expect to receive care that is 10x better. read more

If I die it's on Dr. Katz .He failed to do appropriate testing at my last appointment when I told him I had increasing numbness an and pain throughout entire body. He hurt me on my physical exam, mocked me when I winced in pain, told me that my symptoms weee somatic and oaychogenic and told me o needed an intensive in patient psychiatric unit. He wrote damming clinical notes about me that is preventing me from getting any care. He lied about the neurology exam saying it was notmal and it wasn't. He refused to order imaging or so any other testing. Blamed me for my frequent er visits and imaging done at ER's when that wouldn't be the case if I could receive the proper care from him. read more

Dr Katz is the most arrogant dismissive uncaring memory loss neurologist I've ever seen. Basically he's a narcissistic doctor. You've been warned not that great. Find someone who doesn't ask you the same questions over and over in a short span. Find another doctor who competent and listens-he doesn't even know what that means . Dr. Cat did an EMG on me without a word. I'm not sure he said hello. I kept asking him what he was doing and he wouldn't answer me as he's sticking a needle in my calf. I waited until he was through asked him what else he had in mind isn't a stick of needles in my sciatic nerves and in my back I refused. I went to a neurosurgeon in San Francisco. He read the results of my EMG and said that Dr. Cat had gotten all the results he needed from that first Needle stick. I knew he was treating me like a lab rat that's who he should work with in the future. read more

The rudest most unprofessional doctor my family has dealt with when taking my mom to see him for her dementia. Slump down in his chair, never really looked at you while talking, and an attitude of a very cocky person. Put her on some heavy duty meds., where my mom could barely function. When we tried to get ahold of him he never returned our call, not one call but three. Needless to say, we phoned pharmacist who suggested we take her off the meds right away and call the doctor. I was referred to this Dr by another Neourologist, to be examined and pinpoint the problem I'm having, I waited to have the MRI done, to make my appointment. I was taken in right on time, the assistant did some nerve testing, then she said, the Dr will come in as soon as he is finished and perform the 2nd part of the test. Well, it was already about 30 min and I was still waiting for him, I call the nurse, asked how much longer, because I had to leave by 4:45 at least, well when he came in, he said, my patients wait for an hour after the test, didn't my staff informed you? I said no, if they had, I would had taken an earlier appointment, I said. So, he sat down looking at me, asked, what brings you here, I explained, he said, it is carpotunnel, then he asked my age, I said 74, he then said, well at 74 I don't think you want surgery, my answer was, so , at 74 I'm done?, then he asked, have you ever had an MRI, I said, yes, I had it way before this appointment, for you to review, I said, so you have not read the report, he said no, again, he said, you have also a pinched nerve, at 74, you don't want to have surgery. I said, ok, I'm done here. These people think, they will be forever young, never put themselves in the patient s shoes. I would not recommend this Dr with a very fancy office. I'm sure he will bill insurance fir the entire testing. read more

I was referred to Dr. Katz for an EMG/NCS study and he was inhumane, abusive, borderline torturous and absolutely wretched towards me. He didn't listen to any of my concerns or fears, and caused me severe emotional distress and trauma. He put me through extreme pain, and caused bleeding in my arms and neck, and proceeded to violate HIPPA by having a teenage boy in the room with me while I was disrobed. I was referred to Dr. Katz due to a condition that 4 neurologists and numerous doctors either misdiagnosed or couldn't diagnosis. I cried from pain every night for more than a year. The medications did not work and made my condition worse. One neurologist even left a scar on my arm due to burning my skin during a test. I met Dr. Katz, and he patiently and with great deal of compassion listened to me explaining my symptoms. He went over my records and redid the test without leaving a scar. I moved to SF from AZ. I had been diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, by not one, not two, but DOZENS of neurologists. I was dependent on outpatient plasmapheresis. I had flown out months before the move to establish with him and get this treatment set up. I messaged and called him multiple times before my arrival to please help me set up this treatment, as I have a unique port that not everyone can access. No response. I show up for my job in SF, still no treatments set up. I see other doctors who are now scared because of my deteriorating condition. They reach out to him, and he thinks I'm exaggerating my symptoms. I go into an "MG crisis" and in an emergency situation, they had to put in a central line instead of using my port, because nothing was set up ahead of time. The central line clots inside my heart. I nearly died. 18 months later, that clot still hasn't resolved. Every other neurologist thinks he was insane. He is a horrible doctor and a horrible person. read more

I was pretty disappointed at the end of the day with my experience here. I thought Dr. Katz was supposed to be the right place to go for autonomic issues, my cardiologist sent me here because she diagnosed some heart issues, chest pain, shortness of breath, as being autonomic related. But I honestly felt he had little regard for what I had to say or I'm going through. He definitely took a psychoanalyst approach and asked me very personal questions about my life. Pried at my marriage, family, past. I didn't think it was a big deal at first but I did feel it was strange. Now I have the understanding that he has written notes to my doctors stating this is more mental then physical. That is not correct. I have a wonderful blessed life, I believe in God (which whether you are religious or not people who are find balance through it), have 3 amazing little babies. I don't understand how someone could be having panic attacks without the mental anxiety. The feelings I get do not come on suddenly, they are not episodic. I have them all day everyday. I wake up in the morning with it, I go to bed in the evening with it. Sometimes it feels worse then other times so it can vary in severity but it does not disappear completely. Panic attacks have triggers, and they build up and are episodic. The shooting pains I have, the numbness, weakness, hot and cold sensations, pins and needles these are sensation I feel each day, sometimes I feel vibrating sensations. No matter what is going on in my life stress or not stressed. I was told by my previous neurologist in Napa that I have small fiber neuropathy based on a skin biopsy. Dr. Katz seemed to think I didn't have that and everything I'm feeling is psychosomatic. He didn't do any testing, he just talked. No physical exam, nothing. I wasn't informed I was going to see a psychologist. My life isn't exactly stressful either I'm a stay at home mom. The rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness is all based on activity, eating is the only trigger I have found. To make it worse I have AS (proven by testing) an autoimmune disease and Fibromyalgia, and deal with joint and muscular pain everyday. Along with severe GI problems, and bladder dysfunction. But sure it's just anxiety right. Definitely getting a second opinion elsewhere. I don't recommend being seen here unless your already diagnosed and your condition is serious enough. read more

As a first patient, he definitely comes across as personally indifferent, cold, and didn't make much of an effort in the way of bedside manners. After getting my measurements and vitals, I had to wait 40 minutes in the room. When he finally arrived, he paused the appointment in the middle of it to retrieve a simple instrument from another room... which took him 10 minutes. He came back licking his lips and chewing. Which can only make me think he was taking a food break. During my appointment!? His clinical analysis seemed pretty frank and knowledgeable, which I appreciate. Perhaps what all the other people say about his abilities are true. But overall I wasted a lot of time sitting around on account of him. read more

I echo the negative experiences below, as mine was bad as well. No one goes to the MDA/ALS center unless they suspect something is terribly wrong. It is a very scary place to have to go to, and no one comes here because they want to. But, in my experience, I did not feel that I was being taken seriously by Katz. He seemed more interested in my social history(job, education level, family), than in my physical illness. He seemed intimidated by my intelligence, by my questioning him. Katz, if you are such a brilliant neurologist, I believe that you should practice neurology, and stop playing psychiatrist. People come to this clinic because they have a physical problem, not a mental one. And, if I believe hard enough, my muscles will not become stronger. PLACEBO will NOT cure neuromuscular diseases Katz. Oh how I wish I could have wished away my muscles weakness...sadly, it's become worse. The other thing that bothered me, is that when he performed EMG/NCV studies, he seemed to joke around a lot and I did not feel very confident and comfortable with his skill at performing these tests. Having previously undergone these tests with other neurologists, Katzs demeanor seemed like he was not taking my testing seriously. That is how he came off to me. So, it would have been nice to experience that supposedly brilliant neurologist, because my condition has been going down the hill. If he is brilliant, we did not experience it and decided not to go back, because he was not taking my physical symptoms seriously. If Katz could cut out all the BS, and focused on the patients problems, and showed some curiosity about figuring out the patients illness, perhaps he could have helped me. Guess I'll never know his brilliance, because he failed me. Katz, try listening to your patients, instead of having a monologue with yourself or playing psychiatrist. We come to the clinic for desperate help and our insurance pays you and the clinic big bucks for consults and appointments, I've seen the bills. It's a pity that you have the privilege of being a doctor. People are coming to you for help, answers, and your quick dismissiveness is very detrimental to those of us seeking answers about our condition. It stinks that you represent an MDA clinic. Katz, you need to go get some counseling and learn how to show some empathy for those of us who are suffering. Get with the times and realize that patients are no longer in the dark, you are obviously. We have the Internet TG and access to medical journal articles and medical resources from teaching hospitals across the country and abroad. I have not experienced any brilliance from this doctor, nor empathy, just dismissiveness, coldness, sarcasm...it's unbelievable how these educated people behave. Dr. Katz is the best doctor EVER!!! I have been his patient for six years now. Granted, we didn't always agree but we never gave up on each other. I first came to Dr. Katz with a mystery illness that I thought could be mitochondrial disease because of the way it was running in my family. He told me it was not mitochondrial disease after carefully listing to my symptoms and my family's medical history. He was straight forward to tell me it was systemic, he did not know what is making me ill and that the way it runs in my family, it may get worse. He asked me questions about my personal situation and thought I may be depressed. I told him straight forward I was not depressed but scared and he accepted that. Over the years he kept asking me about my personal situation simply because he cares. When other doctors thought I was a hypochondriac because all my test results came back normal, Dr. Katz believed me that I was really ill. Through the years of looking for an answer to what was making me ill, he carefully listened to ALL the ideas I had and supported me in every way he could, albeit rolling his eyes sometimes while doing so. He often went above and beyond what any doctor would do. He is the doctor I go to when I expected no other doctor will understand and help me. He was there for me when I was crying out of despair, cursing out of anger or over the top happy because I had made a small victory. It sure wasn't always easy being my doctor. A few weeks ago, a doctor from a completely different field found the gene mutations that are responsible for my illness. The first thing that went through my mind when I found out was, I can't wait to tell Dr. Katz and thank him for always believing me that I actually have all those crazy symptoms. I brought Dr. Katz a cake and the answer he had helped me look for and he said to me, "That is the best present I ever got." This was a very disappointing experience, i was referred by my PPO as he had good reviews, my arms are hurting with what seems like carpal tunnel, the diagnosis was "its in your head", i am an healthy individual, and it sucks to be going through this pain and having to ask for help, and he cant figure whats wrong. I was diagnosed with CIDP, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, in early 2008. Supposedly, Katz was the man, the one who knows the most about neuromuscular conditions in the bay area. As it turned out, it is not that he knew the most about these conditions because of personal experience, rather he was one who read insurance claims and whether CIDP was the correct diagnosis and worthy, I guess, of the expensive treatments. How do I know this? He told me, simply. I would describe Katz as cold, sarcastic and indifferent. I noticed it right away but figured what did it matter if he was the best doctor to see for my condition. I weathered on with him accordingly. Unfortunately, my condition weathered on as well. I had already had all the numerous medical tests done by the 1st neurologist so upon meeting with Katz the first time, he rendered his opinion: he agreed with the other neurologist that I likely have CIDP, or possibly GBS - time would tell. Of course I was frightened beyond belief already because I had heard what the 1st neuro had told me about the condition and read up on it online. Katz asked me what I thought about the diagnosis and I expressed my fear to him. He shrugged it off and dispassionately said, "I wouldn't worry about it, come back in 3-4 months and I can pretty much guarantee you it will be gone." I expressed surprise based on what I had learned about the condition being chronic and incurable and he told me to not get "caught in the internet black hole of information." You see, I had come to learn that Katz is a big placebo man. I guess he thought if he convinced me it would go away, it would. It did not. In fact, it got significantly worse until which I could no longer even walk. But I digress. I asked him about treatment possibilities in hopes to minimize nerve damage. His response was, "whether people have treatment or not (IVIG, prednisone, etc.), has no effect on their eventual recovery." To be clear, people do not recover from CIDP, hence the word "chronic." Needless to say, his words, although contradictory to all I had read and heard about CIDP, elated me. Of course I wanted to believe him, believe that this was all just going to go away. I made my appointment for 3-4 months from the day and left his office with a sense of relief. In the meantime... I continued to read about CIDP and searched for clinical trials available. I found one on www.clinicaltrials.gov - http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00278629?term=cidp+burt&rank=1 I knew in my heart that I would end up having this treatment. I contacted the trial staff and obtained a package of information about the treatment protocol and learned that in order to eligible, among other things, I would have to try and fail 2 frontline treatments for CIDP. I repeatedly presented this information to Katz but he was uninterested. He was still sure I was going to get better on my own (the placebo effect). I pushed the subject on subsequent appointments, provided him with literature from the specialist running the trial, Dr. Richard K Burt, and insisted that I was not only not getting better, but that I was getting much worse. He never read it. Why do I think this? Because he told me in annoyance, "Alice, I'm not going to bottom out your bone marrow and your case is not hopeless- besides, it will make you very sick." Now, if he had read the materials I provided him, he would know that the treatment was non-myeloablative, meaning, it does not destroy the bone marrow, only the immune system. Oh, and by the way, I was already VERY sick. I eventually left Katz and flew myself to Chicago where I underwent an evaluation to determine my eligibility for the program. I was thrilled to learn that I was accepted! Now I just needed to get my insurer to cooperate. (There is more on that topic on my website as well.) When I left Katz, I was unable to walk, properly swallow, I was intermittently incontinent and I had severe pain and numbness from head to toe. The autonomic involvement was affecting my ability to breathe and I passed out regularly. I could go on... Despite not being under Katz' care, as I fought tooth and nail with my insurer, who was denying coverage, Katz told a Blue Shield representative who called him, that he was not in favor of my having this treatment and did not support it or find it medically necessary. Thanks... I lost the battle with my insurance company, thanks in part to Katz... My parents paid for the treatment ($$$$) and I no longer have CIDP... read more

He sent us to Dr. Katz for second opinion/validation. Dr. Katz sniffed out IBM, Inclusion Body Mysositis. A very rare variant of Muscular Dystrophy. Degenerative, disabling, not treatable, no cure, but also not terminal. The primary, general neurologist had missed the finger flexor testing and had not detected a pattern of muscle strength loss. I had a 10am appointment for which I checked into early. It took 35 mins for them to call me back and then, 45 mins after my appointment time, still no one had come to conduct my EMG test. I got up and left as I had work and they said the test would take an hour and then would have to wait after and discuss the results. People have work and work their day areouns these appointments. It is simply unprofessional to be 45 mins late and then still not be sorry for it. read more

Dr. Katz is a remarkable, experienced physician and neurologist. He listened carefully and quietly while I explained my problem. He asked questions I could understand. He explained which tests were available to further define my problem (and which most likely wouldn't help) and when it seemed appropriate, involved me in the decision-making about how to proceed. Afterward, he explained not only the test results, but also how they helped defined my situation. And he did it in a way I could actually grasp, ask questions, and also understand in the big picture of my health. Dr Katz is one of the best doctors I have been to. He listened very carefully to my symptoms, did some testing and came up with a diagnosis for me. He was very compassionate and concerned about the diagnosis he gave me which may very well be Primary Lateral Sclerosis. His team of technicians & assistants were personable and kind and were great at explaining the tests I was getting, how it would feel etc .... making what could have been an uncomfortable experience very easy to deal with. Dr. Katz comes across as rather indifferent and cold. He gives a terminal illness diagnosis in the most matter of fact way. He is very straightforward and won't give you any false hope. If the symptoms fit the disease, no matter how grave, he won't be searching for other possibilities. I had a similar experience to LT. Dr. Katz again forgot his reflex hammer and disappeared for 5 minutes after being in the room looking at the computer screen for 5 minutes. I got up and looked to see what was on my records and instead saw that he was reading his email! Went downhill from there; less than a cursory neuro exam not bothering to look in or at eyes, check sensation, motor function, etc. Clearly didn't want me as a patient and sadly, the feeling became mutual. He may be great with ALS or exotic neuro diseases but he seemed very defensive and sure seemed indifferent to me. read more

I have been treated by Dr. Katz for myasthenia gravis for about 18 months. He is very patient with questions and thoughtful with answers and generous with his time for this condition which is treatable but not curable. He is available by phone or E-mail for special problems or questions. My mg has been controlled with drugs. I am satisfied that I am getting the best possible care. read more

My husband was diagnosed with a.l.s. we were referred to doctor Katz by another local neurologist. Before our visit I extensively researched Dr.Katz. I read his education, years in practice, and yes yelp....I for one believe in rating my own experience and I give him a 110 percent. He not only deals with the patient, he deals with the whole package. Family ,care givers, relatives, and loved ones. Everyone has different circumstances!!! After our visit I was appalled that someone could post such a negative experience. Let's face it everyone has a bad day... I found dr. Katz to be the kindest, most compassionate doctor. You have to understand this is not an easy job!!!!! He has to deliver horrific diagnosis to the patient and family members. Dr. Katz has been treating one of my family members who has had ALS for over 8 years now. He is incredibly knowledgeable and very supportive. ALS is one of the world's worst diseases - with no effective medicine. ALS physicians have a very tough job and it takes an exceptional person to help people with ALS.
