If you are a young woman, I would not recommend going to see this doctor. (He might diagnose you with womb stones, if that would be helpful.) They couldn't figure out my insurance. It's normal Anthem Blue but it had the name of my husband's workplace on the card. They sent me a capslock email letting me know so, and I paid for this unhelpful appointment out of pocket. He has a zebra desk, which he says, is to remind him that not everything is a zebra. If anything unusual is happening to you, this is not a doctor for you. He mentioned that I could have "stones of the womb", which I do not believe to be a real thing? Every time I ask another doctor if it's a real thing, they wince and will not address it. He took my very serious complaints very lightly. He told me it must just be the POTS that Stanford had already diagnosed and maybe I needed some time off work but I should be fixable. His prediction was not accurate. Time has gone on and I have gotten worse. I don't think I can yoga, somatic training my way out of this one, guys. Since then I have had another major episode where I struggled terribly to swallow for days, gagged constantly, had horrible psych symptoms in spite of ample psychiatric help and support, and dealt with low grade fevers. Ya boi would 100% turn me lose on the general public. It doesn't matter that I sometimes "forget how to type" because my brain won't talk to my hands and the letters come out scrambled. Not even when it's severe for weeks at a time! No zebras! Only anxious young women. I swear these doctors act like your goal is something other than trying not to die. We're trying not to die. Dr. Pauxtis helped me immensely with cluster headaches. His depth of knowledge and incredible, offbeat sense of humor puts him among the best doctors I've seen. He also took the time to educate me, rather than simply throw a prescription pad at me. He truly cares about his patients without coddling them. I recently met with Dr. Pauxtis regarding a spinal malady that was scheduled for surgery. Dr. Pauxtis took the time to review everything; xrays, MRI's, notes. He also reviewed the areas that would be fused with surgery and the positive and negative results. He was the first doctor to offer alternatives to surgery, with surgery as an option if other avenues didn't provide positive results. I am SO grateful for having met with Dr. Pauxtis and I would recommend him without hesitation. He is extremely bright, attentive and caring. read more

Dr P is quite an amazing and smart doctor. He looks at the patient from a viewpoint that's uncommon these days - he really thinks about you and he digs deep, he thinks of tests and medication that others don't consider or know about, it's always thoughtful, outside of the box, and he doesn't just address what's going on with the patient currently, he's thinking of your future and how to prevent trouble and occurrences of potential life threatening conditions. Because he is independent he's not beholden to the Medical Industrial Complex with their backwards bean counting policies or short sighted/limited standard of care. You also don't get the bum's rush - you get him for an hour each visit whether it's on Zoom or in person. How many times have we set our phone stop watch the minute the doctor stepped inside the door and were horrified that they exited 9 - 15 minutes later! Dr P will email you with labs etc the minute he gets them because he knows you are worried and want to know right away. I heard from him on the Sunday of the 4th of July weekend! What other doctor has that level of caring or respect? Often during our time together he'll tell me something funny, a story of some sort. It makes him human and it lightens the vibe, two things I appreciate. I sort of have a policy of liking doctors who are funny . . . .if a doctor can't laugh at my jokes, well . . . First off I have to tell you I was fumbling around Stanford Orthopedics for months and have seen at least 1 dozen doctors. Nothing the other doctors recommend or did made any sense at all and out of desperation I saw my microvascular hand surgeon who told me Dr. Pauxtis was the most thorough and smartest guy he knew. And the hand surgeon is one of the best in the world. In fact, most doctors I saw barely even did a physical evaluation. Dr. Pauxtis gave me a 2.5 hour examination in which he basically taught me how to read my own MRIs. Not only was his assessment 100% accurate his ordering of my second MRI validated his opinion. All I can say is thank god for Dr. Pauxtis, it been along dark journey and I'm so relived and happy to have made the 5 hour trek from Silicon Valley to see him. I have cervical radicuapathy/stenosis and he has been the only person to pinpoint the spot of problem. I am seeing his neurosurgeon next for a consult. Thank you Dr. Pauxtis before his email to me today I was on the edge of complete bleakness and my faith was really shaken. I appreciate him so much words cannot describe. Wick smart, kind, CARES!!! I understand that sometimes personalities clash and no one person or doctor can possibly be loved by everyone they meet. When a person invalidates us or even disagrees, it can provoke a lot of emotion. So, not to minimize the experiences of others, I must say that my relationship with Dr Pauxtis was positive from the get-go. He was a bit late in arriving for our first appt and apologized while he set up shop. Once in his office, he put me at ease and listened to my story about declining health and cognitive impairment. He then completed a thorough 90 minute examination, punctuated with humor, and ordered some blood work and a brain scan. He eased my fears and when results came in, he phoned me and we set up a follow up. While it's sometimes difficult to get someone on the phone, messages are returned promptly. This guy is the worst physician I have ever met, and possibly worst human. First time I met him he was very nice, then when I came back for follow up, he completely turned on me. He totally flipped out when he thought he might be pulled into a workers comp case, which he was absolutely not. He just got a medical record request. Which then ignited him into a tail spin of anger, superiority complex and accusations about me. I was trying to figure out where my headaches were coming from. He ordered an MRI of the brain and it didn't show anything. Apparently, according to him, that is all you need in order to find anything wrong. Since there was nothing on the report, he said it was in my head, and all the other pain problems I had. A team of other doctors and I strongly disagree, but regardless, if there's something you can't find the first time, especially from test, I wouldn't tell a patient there is nothing wrong and it's in your head. He was so insensitive and plain mean. I practically begged him to just let me finish the appointment to help diagnose or refer me elsewhere, but he was literally trying to kick me out! "Get out, I can't help you," he says. What kind of doctor does or says that? On top of all that, he thought I wasn't "believing" him that I had nothing wrong because I went to Stanford for college and needed a Stanford doctor because they were the only kind of doctor I'd believe. Are you kidding me?! I don't care where, for the most part, the doctor went to med school (but obviously he does). I only care if they are nice, empathetic and knowledgeable. Talk about insecurity complex. He's obviously got good reviews on Yelp, but if he doesn't like you, or if you make him feel inferior merely by the fact you went to a good school, be careful if/when he turns on you. read more

Dr. Pauxtis is by far the best doctor I have seen since I was a little kid, and let me tell you I have seen allot of doctors. He is caring, trustworthy, extremely knowledgeable in both his practice area and general medical and health. Perfect bedside manner, both nice and funny. When I was out on disability and really broke, he even paid my copayments for me so I could continue seeing him. I have been seeing Dr. Pauxtis for my chronic migraines. I was having at least two migraines a week before I started seeing him. I have now been seeing him for over 6 months now and haven't had one migraine!! He is extremely friendly and knowledgeable as well. He doesn't just prescribe you medicine, he explains your options and how the medication will work for you. Every time I have a question I email him and he always responds right away. He should have checked and told me about the cost up front like most doctor office does. Of course he didn't. Two weeks later he sent me the email attached with billed (with aol account I thought the scam email) With the capital letter "ZERO DOLLARS " that he got from my insurance. So I have to pay for the whole amount of visiting fee. With insisting instruction to pay it ASAP with check or credit card, call or stop by to pay. And if pay with card card will be charge 2.75% for convenient fee. Not once in his email mentioned about my testing results. The whole experience I felt like I saw a shoes salesman. DO NOT GO TO THIS DR OFFICE!!! The receptionist is the rudest person you will ever encounter. I had hit my head and went to ER room and they told me to follow up with a neurologist. 10 min. before my appt. the dr. calls to cancel without any reason. I reschedule for another day. The receptionist confirms the new appt. at 10 am. 10 minutes later from his confirmation call he then calls back and says that they have to cancel on me. I ask the reason and he wouldn't give it to me. I told him I canceled another dr. appt. so to keep the one I had with Dr. Pauxtis. The receptionist (who sounded so indignant and just not caring at all) said he didn't have to give me a reason but the fact I asked if the Dr. was going to be in surgery that day might affect my appt. time like last time. I said well that's only a possibility and I will take my chances as I still need to see a neurologist. The receptionist said, "NO, it's too bad I can't have my appt. anymore!" Ridiculous and CRAZY!!!!! Crazy!! Who talks like that to patients??? He then just hung up on me. The review is for the bad treatment I received and also for the TERRIBLE receptionist! I LOVE this doctor!!!!!!!!!! Immediately he made me feel "at home" in his office. His evaluation, consultation and his personal time spent with me talking about subject matters that no other doctor ever shared with me, gave me a whole new insight on what my problem is with my recent onset dizziness. For almost 10 years I have been suffering as a "wobbler", this is a non-clinical name for what I have been diagnosed with due to IV Induced "Gentamycin." I had a great experience here! I was referred by an overly cautious primary care physician who was worried about my history of migraines. Dr. Pauxtis spent a lot of time with me, despite the fact that my visit was not as urgent or serious as other patients that he sees. He fully explained the research on migraines, discussed my personal life and potential headache triggers, and was just generally knowledgable and friendly! I will admit that it can be hard to get in to see him. After my initial call explaining my doctor's concerns, Lenny said he doubted if the doctor would see me because they only take new patients who are referred by their doctors. Luckily Dr. Pauxtis understood my original doctor's concerns and was willing to see me, but for a while I was trapped negotiating between two doctors, which wasn't fun! He actually takes the time to some how "listen between the lines". He always intuitively knows there is more to be gained by further questioning. The appointment feels a little like a stand up routine, with some jokes and commentary about current events. However, later on during a follow up, he dismissed some concerns I brought up. I did not have a good experience with Dr. Pauxtis. He was not my doctor's fist choice to refer me to, but he was first Neurologist I could get an appointment with. My initial appointment with was fine, but he seemed to be in a bad mood when I went back for a follow-up visit. Even though I have adequate insurance, this presumptious scheduler refuses to schedule an apopointment for me. They ask for information and documents that do not pertain to them and will not disclose why. The "scheduler" Lenny, is rude and off-putting with no sense of what customer service is. Dr. Pauxtis is either poorly represented by this guy, or he is also rude and unprofessional. Let me warn you, steer clear of these people. Get another referral instead! I went to Dr. Pauxtis because of a freaky thing that happened to me, and my primary care physician referred me to him. I found Dr Pauxtis to be fantastic. He was caring, took a lot of time with me, listened hard, and really seemed interested in getting to the bottom of my little mystery. He talked to me as one intelligent person to another, never supercilious or patronizing as some doctors can be. He gave me reading material and after I'd had my EEG and MRI, he went over the test results in great detail. As a bonus, have you ever seen every corner of your own brain, explained by an expert? It was an unforgettable experience! As others have mentioned, he mentioned possible vitamin therapy for migraines. Dr. Pauxtis reminded me of a detective, searching for clues to figure out what had happened to me. He was personable, kind, a great communicator, and as with others, available by email. I felt so lucky to have ended up in his office--I contacted my primary care physician to say thank you. And now, to address some of the criticisms I've read here. Sometimes I am really puzzled by the reviews on yelp. We all have our good and bad days and our good and bad reactions to others, but sometimes the discrepancies between my experiences and the reviews just leave me scratching my head. About the arbitration agreement: It's required by the malpractice insurance company. (Wake up folks, it's the vampirish insurance companies that are evil, not your hard-working care-givers!) Every woman who has gone to an OB/GYN has been confronted with those, and unfortunately, in those offices, if you refuse to sign, you lose your appointment (believe me, I know). I do have a strong philosophical problem with pre-dispute waivers of my constitutional rights to a court system, so I talked to Lenny, Dr. Pauxtis's assistant about it. I didn't sign it and that's all there was to it. The doctor never mentioned it. About the folks who reported being offended that they had to leave a message and wait for the office to get back to them--do you understand the economics of trying to run a medical office? This doctor is the opposite of a mercenary! He does not have a full-time office staff. He has a minimal staff--why? So he can spend less on office expenses and spend more time with patients. I don't know why he told someone he doesn't take patients without insurance, but I'm sure it's not because he wants more money--there is probably a very good reason. Don't take things so personally! What do you prefer, to get an immediate answer and see a doctor for 15 minutes or to wait for a call-back and see the doctor for a **full hour**? I'd rather get the doctor's time and brain power. It's very unusual to find a doctor who takes insurance and also gives so much time--which is what's necessary to untangle the types of problems a neurologist is faced with. And I thought that the doctor's office assistant was warm, sweet, and professional. He works part-time which is why people didn't always get the instant service they would have liked, and of course we are all human. If you claim never to have messed up in your job, you are just lying! But in my experience, he was really on top of things. In fact, he managed to get me in quickly although the doctor was booked up with a long waiting list (like many specialists). Dr. Pauxtis was alright, but his pricing is ridiculous and dishonest. I sat with his assistant as we called my insurance company and his assistant assured me my responsibility would be $110, which I paid. A few weeks later I get a bill for an additional $190. NEVER did anyone mention a price tag of $300. Had I known this I would have gone to a different Doctor. Now I'm liable for an additional $190, and when I complained to Dr Pauxtis he was a real jerk about it. Very unprofessional. read more

I was suffering from unexplained tension headaches for a year and had tried several approaches including acupuncture, diet changes and so on. It was getting to the point that I couldn't even focus due to the unexplained pain. I tried to get into the UCSF Headache Clinic and was told that there was a 6 month to year waiting list to get in. I went to a ear, noise and throat doctor who didn't seem to care (she was way more concerned about her pregnancy than my head) and she recommended that I to go to a neurologist. I found a doctor in the East Bay who could get me in the same day (usually a bad sign) and she was a total disaster. I could barely understand her (very poor English) and she was rushed and kept looking in her drug book to find something and I quote "to try on me". After several failed meds I felt like all I was to her was an experiment. Get this, frustrated with me and my lack of progress-- at one point, she asked ME what drug I would like to take! She even offered me up a bunch of strong pain meds but said-- "if I give you these you better be a good boy with them". WTF? After that, I decided it was time to move on once again and try to find a doctor that specialized in treating headaches (which BTW is not an easy task). I finally found out about Dr Pauxtis after a recommendation from my primary care doctor (Dr Charles Moser). After the first visit, I had a good feeling about him and was hoping that he could help rid me of the daily pain in my head. His office is very zen and he takes his time with you. Best of all, he actually seemed to care about trying to prevent my headaches and wanted to try the best approach possible. I'm happy to say that after putting me on Atenolol my headaches are now a thing of this past. I was surprised to see that some here have had negative experiences with him. Remember, every doctor works differently with each patient and you need to find the right one that you feel comfortable with. What I also like about Dr Pauxtis is he will provide you with his e-mail address so you can e-mail him if you have any questions. I've never known a doc to do that before... His assistant Lenny is friendly and although I've only spoken to him via phone, he is very professional and is easy to schedule appointments with. My advice is to give Dr Pauxtis a try and after the first appointment if he's not for you then go find someone else. He's been a good doctor for me who truly cares about finding the root cause of the problem. Oh, and in regards to the comment about an arbitration agreement... Hello??? I knew based on the reviews here that I would either love him or hate him (to be honest reading the reviews almost made me cancel my appointment) but my PCP recommended him so I figured he must be good. Well it turns out he is one of the best neurologists I have ever been to. I have seen all of the big names in SF, who will remain unnamed (but I'm sure who can figure out who), and did not have great experiences with any of them. Dr. Pauxtis however is *hilarious*, I don't think I have ever laughed that much at a Dr. appt, ever. He was funny and conversational and spent a lot of time talking to me about my migraines and how we can go about treating them. What I loved was that his first recommendation was not a medication but a supplement. It is so nice to see a DR, who isn't going to just push more drugs on you. I left with a thick packet of information and felt better about everything. He seems very dedicated to Neurology and perhaps thats what makes him a bit quirky/peculiar? I don't know, I just know that I really liked the guy and I am a tough customer. The appointment scheduling was easy and I found his scheduler to be not only accommodating but super nice as well (so I don't quite understand the negative references to him). To judge from the other reviews, you either love this guy or hate him. Personally, the visit I had with him was one of the best I've had with any doctor. These days, you often feel rushed--they have patients scheduled every 20 minutes. I don't think this doctor does that, as I was with him for about an hour. I had a seizure in August and another in September. I was referred to another neurologist, with an outcome that was lacking. Wanting a second opinion, I got a referral to Dr. Pauxtis from my GP. Dr. Pauxtis showed me my MRI on his Mac, giving me a mini anatomy lesson about the brain. I asked "What's that?" a lot and he was not impatient or annoyed by this. He explained everything: "That's where the carotid artery enters the brain." "Areas that don't contain much water (teeth, bone) show up dark on the MRI." Then he explained about the area of the brain seizures are located in and why this MRI looked good--"You have a fine brain." :-). So the MRI was fine, it was the EEG that was problematic. He listened to what I said, not cutting me off as other doctors have, or dismissing my concerns or questions. He answered every question I came in there with--then at the end asked if I had any questions. I had, but he'd answered them all. Regarding the seizures, he told me about what all my options were as far as medicines went and what benefits and drawbacks of each one were. I have other medical conditions, and medications I have to take for those. He spent a good deal of time discussing those medications, which anti-convulsants would be most beneficial, considering the other medications I was taking. After experienced a number of unaccountable falls along along with strange failures in cognition, I was referred to Dr.Pauxtis by my primary care physician. Dr. Pauxtis was fantastic, a great listener, as my wife, daughter and I described my condition. He performed a standard neurological physical exam along with a cognition test and scheduled an MRI. On this occasion and on subsequent others he carefully explained his findings and how they related too my condition in a friendly, relaxed, intelligent manner leavened with an easy going good humor. A few days before the scheduled MRI, my wife noticed a significant decline in my abilities and called Dr. Pauxtis and asked for advice. He said that with such a change, I should be taken to the ER. We did so and the ER after examination sent me to the MRI and within a few hours I had a craniotomy to drain a subdural hematoma and by the next morning I was feeling like my old self. My follow-up visits were very unlike previous visits with medical specialists who seem to be mostly about how quickly they can get to the next patient, Dr. Pauxtis is never rushed. He is focused on being thorough and takes pains to see that you understand all aspects of the condition. His detailed explanation of the state of my brain after the follow-up MRI was impressive.
