Dr. Bhopal's excellence became very clear to me as I've struggled to find a psychiatrist in Austin that is even in the same league with her. Dr. Bhopal combines a bleeding edge knowledge one would expect from a doctor with an overwhelming sense of empathy that I feel is needed when dealing with patients suffering from anxiety and depression. In my case, I was very overwhelmed at work and my anxiety was getting the best of me. Dr. Bhopal worked with me to find the best medicinal approach while consistently reassuring me that my struggles would pass with time which is what I really needed to hear. Absolutely every time I emailed or called her, she promptly responded, a trend that she's kept even a year and a half later when I'm not even her patient anymore. I emailed her to see if she knows anyone in Austin, and sure enough she responded in just a couple of days. If you're looking for a psychiatrist, I strongly recommend Dr. Bhopal.

I have been seeing Dr. Bhopal for 4 months. I have seen three other psychiatrists in my lifetime,…read moreand Dr. Bhopal is by far the best. Unlike most psychiatrists who simply write scrips and push you out the door in 15 minutes, Dr. Bhopal offers hour and half hour appointments and actually listens to you. While not a therapist, she does have a therapeutic aspect to her work and has a great bedside manner. She offers information about behavioral changes in addition to medication management. She is extremely empathetic. She is also very smart and knowledgeable. You can tell them she is on the cutting edge of the field and has passion for her career. She is happy to make referrals for other specialists or doctors you may want to see.The one time I had to have her paged on a weekend, she responded extremely promptly, within a half hour. If I think of questions after an appointment and call, she always responds quickly as well. She communicates with my therapist regularly, which is helpful. Although the downtown location and lack of parking can be challenging for some, they do have valet there. The receptionist is very friendly and easy about billing. You can make credit card payments over the phone with no extra charge. If you have been disappointed with other psychiatrists in the past, I highly recommend Dr. Bhopal. I strongly believe that she truly wants the best for her patients and wants to do everything in her power to help them recover.

Dr. Slavick is still my go-to guy…read more Recently I've been the recipient of migraine headaches lasting anywhere from 12 hours to 4 days. In addition my medication (Imitrex) conveniently stopped being effective, thus leaving me wiped out, hurting and in serious need of dark, mute rooms. Super fun. So, I packed it in and finally made another appointment. Oh, it was likely the WORST day ever: woke up to an unwelcome Facebook message, managed to douse my pant legs in gasoline while filling up my tank, and then trudged through the rain, into downtown to have my head examined. Sigh. The bright spot was actually the doc's office. They were shocked at how quickly the ENTIRE OFFICE reeked of high octane gasoline (sigh, I'm a klutz, a dangerous klutz) but the receptionist was so sweet about it. She even handed my some air freshener to keep in the room with me. Seriously? I'm out of this world random. Regardless, after a few "WOW, I've never had this before, and I've seen EVERYTHING!" Dr. Slavick moved onto my migraines ;) New scripts for Topamax and some new migraine meds. YAY! Order for a Cardothoracic Echo with Bubble Study to rule out PFO (hole in heart). Not so YAY, but ya know...necessary. Dr. Slavick is very good at explaining everything, and writing EVERYTHING down. He has good bedside manner, and is very prompt. Plus, he won't kick you out if you smell of gasoline. Good thing!

Right at the beginning he went over in details how the head injury I had has resulted in the minor seizures that have come about. He gave explanations as to why it would be best to take certain medications--one of which I was already on from a previous neurologist--and why they might have to increase in dosage over the time. Not to mention he brought up the necessary tests and what the results were for. I should say, unlike some doctors, Dr. Slavick allows prescribing the cheaper generic prescriptions along with the major brands. Also, he is not the only neurologist I have been too. I started off seeing one located at UIC Medical Center, one of the most unorganized hospitals, and got some of the worst service from that doctor. When I received side effects from one medication that doctor just said "Well, okay. We'll put you on this one then." That is so careless and unprofessional sounding. The guy every single time came off as though his patients were just tests in a lab that didn't really matter. Dr. Slavick and those at the Clinical Neuroscienses on the other hand come off as very helpful and caring. They truly do want to make sure that the patients are being helped from what I've experienced.

The biggest pro is that everyone is very personable, and the MA & doctor both had excellent bedside manner. It was genuinely a good experience while I was being looked at. The biggest con is the wait time. I initially walked in around 9:30am, hoping to be looked at 10-10:30am and make a work meeting by 11. However, I waited until nearly 10:30am (an hour later) and ended up leaving because I had to go. I returned with a booked appointment for 12:30pm, and I wasn't looked at until almost 1:45pm. Numerous people that arrived after me were taking in first, and I'm not sure why -- maybe it was a triaging thing. This is a great place to get your immediate/urgent care done, but note that it's not really immediate. If you can find a way to kill the time, you won't be disappointed. However, if you plan to be in and out, you may need to consider another location.

It turned out it was the flu, but when you have a 100 degree temperature and you are 77 years old and your chest tightens up and it's hard to breathe, and impossible to talk without wheezing, it is scary. He patiently listened to all of my concerns and addressed them, coming up with solutions that have already started working. I can't thank him enough! You will quickly realize how much he cares and how much he knows.
