So, I mean, there's that. Now onto my personal thoughts. You ready?
Okay, first and foremost...this place is pretty much a death trap. So in good conscience, I'm taking one star off due to that (because #momlife & all that). That being said, it's also pretty awesome. The day we went here for the first time (in early April?), it was cold and relatively abandoned (I think we saw two other people--very, very briefly). Lots of cool things to explore and read (well, my husband did the reading...I did the exploring). I get the feeling that stepping off the trail even the tiniest bit is considered serious trespassing (because, I mean, deathtrap & all that), so I subsequently get the feeling that pretty much EVERYONE trespasses here.
To be sure, there are lots of "stay out" & "keep on the trail" signs but let's be real: no one with an iPhone is going to stay out of potential harm's way if it means missing a good shot. Suffice to say, I gently ignored the warnings and proceeded with caution. Can't say I *recommend* doing so: do as I say, not do as I do, etc. Just being honest about my experience & my continued blatant lack of regard for my personal safety.
Could I give you a synopsis of the history of Joliet Iron Works? Nope. Not a chance. But it's old and hella photogenic and pretty awesome. Don't go there at night (technically closes at sunset) because you'll either break a limb or two or get arrested...or maybe both. I know a lot of people bring their kids here & if you have safety-conscious kids who are good at following directions, then I'd *possibly* consider it. If you have a handful of feral heathens, skip this unless you have amazing health insurance. Not even playing.
Worth the trip as an adult? For sure. Be cautious of where you step, especially if you're "selectively ignoring" the warnings. Wear good shoes for different terrains, maybe read the signs on the self-guided tour. Be especially careful in areas where you're obviously not supposed to be. I'd say "follow the rules" but I can't imagine more than 5% of the visitors here do, so...yeah. Stay safe out there, but definitely consider making the stop. :) read more
