In our experience over the last 17 years as a pet owner around here is that an unfortunate amount of pet parents at other parks do not always pay as close attention as they should ; this causes a lot of fighting, biting, and and doggie doo doo going unnoticed. There is a water pump when it warmed up (AND A WASHROOM SO YOU HAVE TO REASON TO EVER LEAVE...LOL) There are two sides to this park one for larger dogs and one for dogs up to 35 lbs. This definitely helps deter a lot of unforeseen problems that could occur. Grass is very well maintained they have a third side they switch off too to keep grass from becoming a mud hole. I wish everyone in Frankfort would use the dog park instead of the Plank Trail as that would keep the Trail free of dog poo. That would be good for everyone else on the Trail and the dogs would be happy also. It is easy to register, pay the nominal fee and get a key card at the Park District office. Frankfort IS a hell of a lot more appealing since this park is there though. $50 and proof of your pup's shots gets you a year long membership. Included in that is private access to a massive enclosure that's all soft grass. There's shaded areas, free poop bags, and a time out section if your dog gets a little too excited to be frolicking out in the sun. It's honestly my dog's favorite place to play, and I don't even mind driving about 45 minutes from the city to do so.

Clean and most dog owners are friendly. To use this park you need to have a permit, which is the only bad thing about it. Bathrooms are available. It's those holes with the hollow toilets over these, so these literally stink. That's about as bad as it gets though. Ironically it smells even better in the actual dog park. Of course there's a few rules to follow, and these are posted at the entrance so you can't miss these. Bigger and smaller dogs have separate areas. There's amenities like water fountains and poop bags for free. Good place for dogs. It's mostly clean and safe. There's plenty around, from the lake to some trails.

Our pups enjoyed their visit very much and although the small body of water didn't look the cleanest, we still let them cool off and enjoy a swim. The picnic tables in a shaded area were appreciated on a hot day. Bring lot's of drinking water for you and your pet! Also, as with most dog parks, remember that any toys you bring for fetching are likely going to be "fair game" to the many other dogs you might see here.

The Heron Rookery is a true must see. But, I learned just in time you have to hit it (for its full effect) at very particular times. This year, on last years recommendation of my Yelp friend Robert, I hit this place within the time frame of the breeding season of these beautiful birds. And, having done so, the visitor centers guides made sure I didn't miss a thing. Although there are a variety of small wetlands in the burbs that play home to groups of migratory herons and egrets, this place, I was told is considered major league. The nesting islands are well protected, the peeps get the privacy and security they need and we, the general public, get acre on acre of peace and the opportunity to visualize what is unmistakeably innate. If you go, try to get in "this window" and join one of their interpretive hikes. It's beautiful, no matter the weather and the experience itself will put everything else in your life in complete perspective. The preserve, I found, has additional hours too ... you can even enjoy sunset ... and there are other venues in the preserve that are a little less restrictive. Make the time, take the trip, and the herons will take care of the rest. Awesome.

The paths are really close to the road, which is very noisy at peak traffic periods in the afternoons and weekends.
