On November 28, 1972, Fort Myer Historic District, was designated as a national landmark, located and situated in Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia. I am familiar with Fort Myer as I periodically travel to Washington, D.C., just as I did on Friday, July 15, 2016. I learn something new every visit. For instance, I learned before being renamed 1881 to Fort Myer (Brigadier General Albert J. Myer), the garrison originally established under Major General Amiel Whipple. Fort Myer is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, and home for several elite military units, including the 3rd Infantry Regiment also known as "The Old Guard." Rarely during my visits at Fort Myer I have not witnessing a funeral service taking place at the Memorial Chapel on Fort Myer - the silence of a full honor funeral procession; an extremely and dignified event carryout by The Old Guard, including its Caisson Platoon. Sites of the nation's capital from Fort Myer is spectacular. Lastly, former residents of Fort Myer included General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, George C. Marshall, and William Westmoreland, just to name a few. Looking forward to my next visit! read more
