a pizza and a glass of wine
Stephanie M.

I visited Joie Farm Winery while on a trip to Penticton in the middle of August. The winery is about a 15 minute drive from Penticton, up the Naramata Bench. To reach the winery, you drive down a dirt road to a small parking lot. From there, you walk past a portion of the winery's vineyards where you are greeted by a hostess and a menu for the day's lunch menu. In addition to a planned wine purchase, I came to this location because I was looking for lunch as well. In addition to a few appetizer-y offerings, the winery had a few pizzas on the menu which are cooked using an outdoor wood fired oven. After ordering, you are handed a mini chalkboard with your name and then let loose up to the wine shop to taste the wines while waiting for you food to be brought out. In the wine shop, my husband and I got to taste several wines before we settled on a bottle of Gewürztraminer to have with our pizza lunch. I loved being able to learn about the different wines and suggestions for pairings. After purchasing our bottle of wine we went out to the winery's patio which includes blankets for chilly days and gorgeous views of the valley. Only moments after sitting down, our hot fresh pizza was brought to our table. Sitting on a warm patio with views of Lake Okanagan, eating fresh wood-fired pizza and drinking local while was a wonderful experience that I recommend.

I visited Joie winery after a friend recommended it as her favourite winery to visit in the area. I have to admit that I totally agree! In addition to wine tastings, you can order wine by the glass and pizza by the ... pizza. Pizza is prepared on site in their wood fired oven. I recommend stepping up and ordering at least 1 pizza per adult and THEN starting your wine tasting. By the time you're finished tasting, your pizza will be ready. You can order a glass of the wine you like the most and sip it while munching on some truly delicious lunch. I've followed the Joie instagram feed for some time and was excited to visit. The bustle of early Fall crush time certainly contributed to the excitement of the trip. Keep in mind that Van Westen, Elephant Island, and Deep Roots winery are all within walking distance of Joie. This is a great opportunity to get out of your card or off your bike and stretch your legs. That said, these wineries are all accessed from the bottom of a downhill lane so if you have the option to visit it by car, rather than by bike, your legs may thank you the next day. The wood fire oven pizza isn't available every day so check their website to plan your visit.

Lovely tasting experience followed by delicious Neapolitan-style pizzas on the lawn. Casual, relaxed atmosphere. Uncomplicated wines. After visiting several wineries where we felt 'processed' and rushed, Joie Farm was a breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively. Be prepared to wait for up to an hour for your pizza, but that's what the chilled bottle of white is for, right? I can't wait to go back.

With vendors from local wineries and eateries, there will be something here for everyone in your crew. Grabbed a beer flight at Neighborhood Brewing - standouts were the Lime Lager and IPA. Ladies in my party had cocktails at Workshop Spirits, thinking they were great and refreshing. We all gathered for food at Ward's. We had the nachos and Potato Confit Flatbread - both were super good, including the cilantro crema of the nachos. The peach Bellini machine wasn't ready when we first arrived, but by the end it was available to give us testers and we might come back just for those. TIP: drinks can only be consumed in the patio of the establishment you're buying from, but food can be delivered to any of those patios. Centre seating is table service by Ward's that allows you a taste of beverages from any of the vendors. Also, the water features around the center are pet (and people) friendly for cooling off on a hot day. The outdoor environment, even on a hot day, was a nice setting for appreciating the surrounding area. Also enjoyed the acknowledgment of First Nations' people who first inhabited the area (like all good Canadian establishments).

My girlfriend and I were on vacation through Okanagan wine country. Over six days, we visited sixty wineries. You can follow our various locations with this disclaimer. That's sixty wineries, not an exaggeration. We ended the trip with 120 bottles acquired. This is not to say that there's an alpine coaster or complimentary back rubs or anything. It's just a purified wine-lovers experience. Firstly, there's that gate, one of only two places we've been to boasting one, and yes, that minute detail helps. Cars approach the rustic cottage, fringed by vineyards, gardens, and picnic tables. Being on a hill, the view is incredible. Within, we found a comfortable if cramped wine tasting area with décor following the theme reflective of the roaring twenties / Jazz age, basically enjoying the decadent elements of The Great Gatsby without the annoyance of actually reading that dreadful novel. And it probably has the best-looking bathroom on our trip...yes, I just said that. Trust me; you'll agree with me when you see it. The ultimate point regarding the success of Kraze Legz, more than anything aesthetically about the location, is that the wines are amazing...according to my girlfriend. I admit it's not my favorite, but I also admit being in the extreme minority. My girlfriend and our best friends all adore both Kraze Legz and Skaha wines (by the same winery), so much so that we are on the wine subscription now. The staff is pleasant and I loved the fact you must drive through a housing division to get to it. Yes, if you like drinking wine, Kraze Legz is a destination spot. It's out of the way, but worth the diversion.

The property itself is nice with a cute bathroom and great view. There are games for kids to play and lots of different seating options. The road here is unpaved, similar to a logging service road. You don't need 4x4 but it is a bit steep and just know it's not asphalt. A Tasting is $15 but they poured some extra wines for us. They also use some grapes not commonly seen like blanch noir. Note that they douse grapes from other vineyards including across the border, but they are transparent about that by marking those particular wines on the menu.

They're a family run winery specializing in natural wines. We dropped in on a Saturday morning (with 11:00am reservations). If you climb up a hill, you're in the right spot. View is absolutely gorgeous from the top. We were given the tasting and tour by Jordan (one of the winemakers!); really friendly and informative. Tastings are $10.00 per person and we were given 5 wines to sample. Fee is waived with purchase. Tastings are by appointment only but can be booked easily online. Sadly, they were sold out of several bottles (including their pet nat). - Blanc de noirs 2018 - flowers and strawberries. - Viognier 2018 - citrus fruit and salty rocks. - Rosé 2018 - watermelon jolly rancher. This one wasn't as dry as described (bone dry) but had a smooth finish. This one turned out to be our favourite so we bought a bottle ($25.00) for home. - Pinot noir 2017 - floral and cherries. - Syrah 2018 - pink pepper, violets and leather. If you're into natural wines, LRW is a no brainer.

It's tasting lounge is minuscule with no ration given to merchandise or paired picnic-fodder. It doesn't offer the particulars all wineries must list. There are no Cabernet Sauvignons, Pinot Noirs, or Syrahs? Even its name is weird--not taken from its address or a simplistic nearby geographical feature. Synchromesh? Am I getting my car serviced? It can't even be bothered to hire staff, forcing patrons to listen to the winemaker himself ramble on about how great his Rieslings are. That's right, Rieslings...white wine. And not only that, but among the ten wines generally offered, six are Rieslings, limiting options to those wishing the standard fair. My God, I love this place. As for those Rieslings, I bought four. I thought the reds were offered because the owners felt they needed to. This is a perfect example of a winery knowing something well and throwing everything behind it in order to perfect that one impeccable variatel. It's an example sadly so few follow, as such dedication usually comes at the expense of selection. I'd rather have that than a traditional winery just offering the staples. Just because there are six varietals of Riesling does not equate them being identical. Each one caters to a distinct palate, but each is strong in their own regard. I didn't buy the same bottle twice. As for the name, love it. Talking with the owner directly as he poured samples, I'd have it no other way. The small tasting room, focused and without distraction. This is a winery that sells what it knows and it knows Riesling. It's not surprising that Synchromesh makes the best. That's my declaration; they do the best Rieslings in the Okanagan. Do I have a sample size, or am I just being glib? From August 2016 to May 2017, my girlfriend and I visited over 100 BC wineries, so take that what you will. Synchromesh is one not to miss, regardless if you prefer whites or reds. The Rieslings will sway your opinion. If you still dislike it after the visit, then there is no hope--you will always see red. By the way, the day we arrived, it was over 34 degrees outside, but inside was an ice box. Thank you.

That changed very quickly. - This old lady with glasses, white shirt, and curly white hair that was managing the cash register around 1-130pm on August 11th 2023 was very rude to our party of "12". We told her we didn't need a table that large as not everyone in our group drinks and wanted to explore the winery. She started to give us an attitude and said that we can't have the rest standing around the winery. Could it be racism ? I 1000% believe so. Seeing that we were a group of Asian people she definitely didn't give us the service that she gave to other parties. My family was really excited to come here as majority of them was their first time here. 100% would NEVER come here again. I would recommend anyone that is not white to come her as this place is RACIST towards no white people Horrible service. Shameful. Awful experience. The ONLY upside was our wine tasting lady. She was very nice, but due to the sour experience of that cashier lady. I will never come back. Our party was about to buy 10 bottles of wine to bring back to Calgary and lucky we brought our services elsewhere. Ambiance: - terrible. Due to the experience above.
