Saloom Dept Store - Annual Post Christmas shopping for outdoor needs.

Everyone has a few places that are inexplicably magic for them. For me, one of those is Saloom…read moreDepartment Store in Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. It is not what it seems by its name. It really only has one big department - outdoorsmanship. If you can wear it, walk in it, camouflage in it, shoot it, cut with it, or lock it safely away in a cool metal safe, Saloom's has it in a variety of sizes and colors. Ever since I started coming out to this part of Appalachia and was introduced to this great old store, I have made my annual pilgrimage over Christmas. It is the place to get those unusual (for me) gifts for the brothers in law who spend most of their free time hunting and fishing in the beautiful hills and vales of this part of the Allegheny Mountains. Boots, Camo jackets and pants, steel blades for every purpose, insulated hunter's overalls, bows, arrows, ammo, scopes and a million Woolrich sweaters and Browning shirts piled high on shelves in the back room in amazingly attractive styles. All this in a 3rd generation store with broad plank floors, and 12 foot tintype ceilings. There is even a 14 point elk on the wall guarding the premises. I always manage to find something that I like, and whatever I get for my brothers is always appreciated. Today, I found two 3 button sweaters in cotton and wool that fit me and instantly made me look like Jeremiah Johnson. Son needed a new camo sweatshirt, and the dad in law liked the feel of his new pocketknife with its glimmering Georgia Steel blades. I am an easy mark in Salooms, coming from back East, and lacking the growth of beard and twangy argot of the locals. Still, they know who I am and my people, so tolerate my presence knowing I will be leaving with a nice chunk of their inventory. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world and love the touch and feel of a true piece of old fashioned American mercantilism, track down Saloom's and take a look around. I defy you to walk out without something you never knew you needed, but suddenly cannot live without.

Sure enough they have hunting and fishing licenses and I think everything you could imagine for hunting and fishing....so much nicer than these big super stores which by the way I avoid at all costs so my advice would be to stop by and check them out...good friendly people that know what they are talking about

This particular store is in The Waterfront shopping center. I recently shopped here for women's shoes and accessories, but I also looked briefly at the men's and children's sections. Although the store obviously does not have as large of a selection of merchandise as an online store, I thought that the assortment of shoes and accessories was good and that the prices were low to moderate. The time of year is fall, so I saw mostly dress shoes, sneakers, boots, and slippers. The handbags were not the brands that I prefer, but I liked the selection of socks. I picked out two pairs of socks that looked thick and warm. They were an average price of several dollars per pair. The cashier did her job well.

I'm a 65 year old man (pedestrian-walker) and over the 13 years on once a year going into the Homestead/Munhall DSW store, they rarely and mostly never have a men's size 9 regular fit or a men's size 9 in any width. Only larger shoes- wide and xtra wide for men. So I gave up going into the store, for this store has never provided me with kind, nor satisfactory service whatsoever. Oh their value is too expensive, buy your shoes on Amazon.com. You'll have much better prices and much much better options on Amazon website.

NEVER WAS TOLD ABT RESERVING PARKING & EVEN ASKED - WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT AN ISSUE The first thing they moved, a couch cushion, was immediately damaged and stained blue. They denied doing this, but there was no stain until they picked up and moved the cushions into their box in the hallway outside the apartment. Their box had blue marks on the outside of it, and there were blue stains in the carpet in the hallway outside the apartment underneath where they put their box. When the movers were told the stain was not there before they picked up & moved the cushion, they argued and refused to take responsibility, then obtained a signature for a release of liability on a BLANK form & filled in the damage they caused to the cushion as pre-existing! That move caused them to lose their tip. The office did call us the next business day and agree to pay for the damage the alex and derrick caused.

The three movers from Two Men and a Truck were extremely slow, intentionally sluggish, and unprofessional. First, we were having some difficulties finding a parking space in our old building. Within 5 mins, they got impatient and threatened to cancel the move. We had to basically beg them to not cancel the job. During the move, my boyfriend and I are going back and forth moving stuffs on our own although we are PAYING them to move. A repairmen from our new building couldn't send how slow and arrogant these movers are, so much so that he jumped in to help us. The movers were slow because they were paid by hour. We ended up paying for way more than what we expected!!! I'm still mad at this experience. I'm writing this review now because I'm looking for moving companies recently and Two Men and a Truck's name pop up again. I recommend staying away from this company!!
