This place is amazing! I needed to replace an old and cheap leather jacket with something similar but would last. They hit it out of the park! The price was very fair for such stellar work, my jacket is seriously a work of art. The communication was excellent and jacket was delivered earlier and better than expected. This is an old school place that does what they do (make leather apparel) exceptionally well. It's not Nordstrom in that they don't have a state of the art website and app. There aren't salespeople in the sense of "selling". If you go in and know what you want, they will let you know the cost and work with you to get you what you want. It's not the kind of service that can be done over the phone or online anyway. Sometimes NextDoor is a good thing. Like a good neighbor, a gentleman on ND referred me to Johnson Leather when I asked about alterations. I went to see Alan who's been in business since 1979. Knowing that they do custom an technical leathers (motorcycle gear etc.) I thought Alan would be up to the challenge of taking in my vintage leather coat-blazer-jacket that has fringe, a shearling collar and beading. The good thing is that none of the bells and whistles of the piece were affected in the alteration. Alan and I agreed that the shoulders already fit pretty well for it being a men's coat, now he had to turn the rest of it into a women's garment. So, he took up the sleeves, and took in the arms, chest and body and turned it around in just a little over a week. Love "ahead of schedule"! Alan was off the day I went to pick it up, but Damon was on. He went over the alteration specs and had me try it on. It felt great. It looks like it was made for me. Good alterations don't come cheaply and great alterations definitely do not, but they were well worth it. Damon also showed me some red leather jackets for a girlfriend of mine. Cute! They do custom work, have their own line and sell very reputable leather brands. I think Johnson Leather is an SF tradition! read more

I ordered a shearling jacket one size too big, so I brought it in for alterations. I wasn't quite sure what to expect since not many of the reviews were for shearling, but they made it happen! Since it was oversized in general, I had them shorten the area around the torso. I think this ended up being around $150 (I can't quite remember how much it was but I don't think I paid over $200). I had wanted to get the sleeves shorted a bit, but they recommended that I not do that since it would get pretty pricey. I was pretty glad they told me not to, since I wore the coat to Asia this past week and the longer sleeves saved me from cold fingers! Anyway, I highly recommend if you are looking for a great leather alteration service! Also, make sure you pick up your coat only after they call you! read more

I wish I needed more leather jackets so I could have an excuse to visit this place. A true artisan shop making handmade, high quality leather jackets right there in their San Francisco store. The place has history, skills, and the goods to really deliver a special piece. My search for a leather jacket landed me on this place. I knew generally what style I wanted, but I really wanted a right fit. JL stocks a ton of ready made jackets, but I went with the bespoke route. I worked with Damon to talk over the design, then chose the materials, got measured up, and began the process. I opted to get a test fit jacket made, something to get an idea of what the final product would be. Once finalized, they then got to work and out popped a beautiful jacket. Whole process was about a couple months. The final product was well made, clean crisp consistent stitching, nice details, just what you would expect from a shop like this. JL really go out of their way to ensure you are totally satisfied with the product, they understand that this is a big purchase, something that will last decades, and they really value your business. Practically, they make race suits and jackets for CHP as well, so their stuff has been tested to the highest standards. But most importantly, Damon and Alan are just great people to deal with. The whole process was a joy. They charge a very fair price for the product you're receiving. I did buy it off the sale rack since I was on a tight budget, but it's still really nice. The people were great and were trying to help me. I took my favorite leather jacket here for repair. It was in pretty bad shape, the leather above both pockets was tearing, the lining was torn, the leather was cracking and discolored all over. I forgot to take a before picture but I just picked it up and they did such a good job! It looks like new. They were super communicative and explained all the repair options and pricing when I dropped it off, and then called me as soon as it was ready. The quality is simply outstanding and the prices usually lower than what you would pay for overpriced department-store junk. My most recent commission was a jacket in bright green leather with large pockets suitable for holding an iPad. As usual Alan was attentive to detail and making sure the heavy weight would not make it lose its shape, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Johnson Leather is a high-end (ie expensive) leather retailer specialising in motor-cycle leathers (although they also sell more run-of-the-mill fashion items). They supply motorcycle jackets to an impressive range of police departments in the US, including the Highway Patrol and San Francisco Police departments, which is a pretty good endorsement. All motorcycle jackets are heavily built (top quality leather and zips, etc) and carry a lifetime guarantee, although you are unlikely to need it: I bought a motorcycle jacket from there 12 years ago, and it is still as good as new. This kind of quality does not come cheap of course: expect a basic jacket to cost around $550-$700. All the items are made on the premises, and can be made to measure, with detailing (eg extra pockets) to your own specification, within reason. They stock a bewildering array of different types and weights of leather, and can advise on the best type depending on a product's intended use (eg heavy cowhide for motorcycle jackets). I found the staff to be helpful and friendly, and they were able to make my jacket for me within my one week stay in San Fransisco. Given the price, I would advise only buying from them on a visit - I wouldn't trust myself to get the measurements right by post or email, and returning an item for alteration from the UK would be huge hassle - the postage cost itself is high, but particularly as you have to pay the UK's hefty import duties on delivery. read more

They were nice enough to hold on to the piece because I could not get to the shop to pick it up for months. Johnson Leather is a Bay Area motorycle icon. A lot of people have bought gear from them and been really happy. I'm not one of them. I bought a custom made leather motorcycle jacket from them and I have had nothing but problems with it. I spent around $1,000 for a beautiful tailored leather jacket that I can't actually ride in. The jacket has three problems, only one of which is super critical. But that one is SUPER critical. It actually renders the jacket useless as riding gear. The first problem is the liner. This is pretty minor. The liner is a dud. It's very thin and sleevless. So It provides no actual insulation. If the weather is even a little bit cold, all my body heat just goes out through my uninsulated sleeves. So I can't use the jacket in chilly weather at all. Not that there are EVER chilly days in sunny San Francisco... The second problem is the vents. There are two big vents in front. And there are two big vents in back. In *theory* this is supposed to make for excellent ventilation. And if I'm riding at 50+mph it does. But below that speed, heat builds up above the vents, in the shoulders. I do 90% of my riding in San Francisco at speeds much lower than 50. Which means on those rare warm days, I over-heat. So I can't wear it on warm days either. I also can't wear it outlside of SF because even if it is chilly here, it is usually warm everywhere else I might go. Between the bad ventilation and bad liner, I can only wear the jacket if the outside temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees. So basically never. When I let them know that the ventilation doesn't really work, and their liner also doesn't work, they dismissed my input. They didn't want to hear anything other than praise. Now for the critical failure in this jacket. The one that means I can never seriously ride while wearing it. It is poorly fitted across my chest, so that if it is zipped up to the top, it pokes me in the adams apple. It actually makes me gag when I ride. They also dismissed this criticism as being unimportant. "Motorcycle jackets aren't supposed to be comfortable" was the response I got.... Srsly? They said they could not fix the choking problem because it would require rebuilding the jacket and that would be too expensive. They did make several cosmetic alterations in an attempt to appease me. But the bottom line is that I paid around $1,000 for a custom leather riding jacket that is only good as a closet ornament. Oh, and no refunds on custom gear. In the end I bought a used Icon jacket off of CL that I use, because it actually fits. And the best gear is gear that you can actually ride in. I will never buy custom gear again. It's off the shelf from now on. read more

A couple of months ago I contacted Johnson for information on what it might cost to get an XXL classic long leather trench coat made. I was told it would cost $950 - $1,350 at that time depending on my exact needs. Saturday I went in to get measured and place an order. Rather than being welcomed or even recognized I had to watch and wait for an old guy who was chatting with a group of hipsters or tourists about what he got in the mail from Japan. His last concern was apparently any customer service. After waiting to talk to him and place my order I was still ignored... I finally gave up and walked out. In looking on line I then chatted with a foreign maker of such jackets and fond they cost a fraction of Johnson Leather's quotation to me for basically the same jacket so I intend to order from the foreign source. The foreign maker is more than happy to answer my questions and followup quickly as they want my business which apparently Johnson Leathers does not. I cannot comment on Johnson Leather's quality but if what I faced is an example of their customer service I got off lucky not doing business with them. read more

I'm... differently sized, and have odd ideas about how things should work, so most of my moto leather gear (jackets, gloves, etc) requires alteration. Johnson's has so far, done most of that work, and done it well. They've also re-lined my non-moto leather jacket, and done a fine job of it. Are they cheap? Nope. They really are not. Do they do a fine job? Yes, yes they do. Will I keep coming back when I need work done? Oh yes, yes I will. I'll also recommend them to anyone else who lives in or near SF, and needs leather work done. Here's hoping they stay in business indefinitely, not quite sure what I'd do without them. read more

One consignment shop happened to be going out of business and I found the greatest jacket ever. Ultra tapered in the body, check. Action back, check. Quality leather, check. YKK zippers, check. It is the best motorcycle jacket I have ever owned hands down. A year later I'm in Johnson Leathers getting another jacket made in another color; just cause I wear my brown jacket every day and I feel I should mix up the color choice every once in awhile. I bought a textile motorcycle jacket made by Johnson Leather about 2 years ago and it's one of the best jackets I have owned, and reasonably priced. My zipper failed about two weeks ago while I happened to be in the area -- and it was close to closing so they couldn't help me out right away (I needed to wear the jacket home!) but found a zipper for me, gratis! Sadly, they are getting out of the textile jacket business but have a great sale right now on the remaining models, I highly recommend getting one of their awesome textile motorcycle jackets (a steal at $148.00!). read more

Here's a tip: don't shop for anything that could possible be considered a luxury good anywhere near Nob or Russian hill. The prices here were (like Jem) truly, truly, truly outrageous. And the quality of the goods absolutely didn't justify the prices being charged. When the guy behind the counter asked if I had any questions, it was all I could do not to say "Yes: are you freaking serious?" So, let these guys continue to trim the fat off the wallets of the hedge fund managers who live up the hill. There are plenty of leather stores with better prices and better merchandise around the city. P.S.: When a FiDi lawyer says the goods are overpriced, you can take that to the bank. I've bought two leather jackets from Johnson Leathers, one about a dozen years ago and one just under two years ago that I still own. Both had the same problem: The lining around the inside pocket (where I keep my wallet) came apart prematurely, creating a nuisance at first and eventually rendering the thing unwearable without repairing the lining. The first time it happened I just wrote it off to bad luck, in part because I happened to find a great deal on a replacement jacket while on a trip, so I simply replaced it and didn't think much more about it. But when the same problem happened to me recently with the newer jacket, I decided to go in and see if they would repair it under warranty. The jacket has not had rough use, the exterior looks fine, and I've had the interior lining of way, way cheaper jackets (I'm talking #39.95 JC Penney made-in-Bangladesh type) last far longer. To my surprise, the proprietor at first would not take responsibility. He swore he'd never had any problems like this, insisted "this is a good lining" (even though it was also beginning to wear out in two or three other places), and said the warranty did not apply because the warranty is for defects in workmanship and a) the lining wasn't his workmanship, they buy it from a supplier, and b) the problem didn't seem to be workmanship but with the material wearing out. As politely as I could manage, I called bullshit on this and spent about 10 minutes arguing with the guy. Finally, he agreed to replace just the panel of lining that includes the area around the pocket at no charge. This was the minimum proper resolution (although leaving unfixed the other sections of lining that are starting to wear prematurely), but I had to argue like hell to get it. Several days later, he called me to say that the repair guy had noticed that a line of stitching was missing from when the jacket was made -- stitching that apparently helps hold everything in place and thus reduces strain and wear on area around the inside pocket. So it was indeed entirely their problem. Oddly, he passed this along just as an interesting discovery and never apologized for trying to get out of fixing the problem. I now have my jacket back, with the disintegrated part of the lining replaced, but other parts of the interior probably only having 6-8 months to live. So... he did the right thing to solve the most pressing problem, but it took way too much effort and the whole experience did not leave me with a feeling of wanting to patronize this establishment again. read more

I would trust all my leather products with this place. I came here last Saturday to have the sleeves on my questionable leather jacket shortened. I say questionable because Alan and I had a long discussion about weather the jacket was real or fake leather. Apparently, retailers do such a good job at mocking leather jackets now that it is nearly impossible to tell whether a jacket is real or fake leather. Amazing eh? Anyways back to Alan's work. In comparison to the horrible Westlake leather place I went to previously, Alan measured my sleeves not once, not twice, but three times to make sure he had the perfect length. He made sure that the jacket wouldn't hike up past my wrists when i stretched or did anything but have it at my side. He actually took down how many inches he needed to take off the sleeves (whereas Westlake Leather Alterations failed to do this, which is probably why they lopped off too much). And he let me take as much time as I needed to make sure that the jacket was perfect. I never felt rushed. I also originally wanted the shoulders fixed because they're a little big. They're not that bad, but a little noticeable. He warned me that it would take about a hundred dollars to fix that because it's a pretty hard job. And when i tried it on, he thought it wasn't that bad and recommended that I save my money and not get it done. I thought this was very honest of him, actually telling me it is better to save my money, versus the other place just taking my money and rushing me out the door. Total job was 62 dollars to shorten the sleeves which I thought was a pretty good price. Leather alterations are very expensive and the other place tried to charge me 75 bucks, and the guy didn't even know the jacket was fake leather! He was convinced it was genuine lamb leather. So a guy who didn't know his stuff wanted to charge me more than a guy who did know his stuff, what does that tell you? That other place was a rip off and this place is actually worth it. Alan also remembered me right when I entered the store. He knew what item I had, what I needed to fix about it and he remembered that we had a whole discussion on whether the jacket was fake or real, and whether I needed the shoulders fixed or not. This shows that this guy is genuine. Do us all a favor and keep bringing business to this guy so the store can be in business for years to come! I know I will be bringing all my leather alteration needs to Alan from now on. read more

I just got a fresh Leather Jacket as a gift from my Detroit Family and I noticed a few little marks on the jacket after wearing it a few times. I don't know anything about leather, FYI. Staff was friendly and accommodating and they recommended a cleaning product for me to take care of the issue, and even did a little instore demonstration of the cleaner on my jacket to show how easy it was to use. In a world where so few people are nice, or take the time to speak to their customers, I really appreciated the service and time they took with me.
