John's storytelling alone was worth the trip. The sordid history of slavery was framed in a context that made it feel personal, digestible, and meaningful to the listener. At least it felt that way to me. Hearing the stories before walking through the cabins, I could just feel the moment in history... rather than reading and digesting paragraphs on paragraphs of historical accounts on the walls while inside such a historical space. The nature tram tour and the animal conservatory ended up being the icing on the cake. It was beautiful to see and be immersed in all of the nature. The only drawback is that the main house tours were booked up and we didn't learn that until we got there. It worked out for us because I would much rather have had the slavery history tour and our time was already limited. All in all, this place is a must see (especially in April, when the azaleas are in bloom)!

We had the House tour which was very well done, interesting and educational. Throughly enjoyed it. We also did the tram tour through the property which we enjoyed a lot. The path was dry so we did get a dusty ride. In hindsight if the trail could have been lightly watered down to help with the dust this ride would have been much more enjoyable. The best of the three tours was the "Slavery to Freedom" tour. John was incredible telling the story of slavery and more importantly what these people went through. It was so educational hearing the story (instead of dates,) but emotionally moving. It made me realize that the history books used when I was in school were so generic and lacking any kind of detail and real life experiences these people went through. Seeing the slave houses with our hearing John's presentation would not have anywhere near the effect of seeing them after his presentation. John brought the real life detail to us. I told John that he should record his presentation and send a copy to every history school teacher in America. If you only go to one tour at the Magnolia Plantation, definitely go to John's "Slavery to Freedom" presentation.

To Whom It May Concern,…read more It is our hope that sharing our experiences with Magnolia Memorial Garden will prevent some other family from going through the disappointment and heartbreak we had with dealing this cemetery in burying our beloved family member. One of the last wishes of our loved one was to be buried among her parents and many other family members interred at Magnolia. The funeral was scheduled for Tuesday, August 20 and we began making arrangements for burial with Magnolia a week prior to burial. The entire week was spent trying to locate a burial property that we purchased in the early 80s. Magnolia's paperwork was inconsistent and contradictory and they did not demonstrate any sort of concern about putting our loved one to rest. You should not leave a cemetery angry and hurt as we did after dealing with the staff at Magnolia Memorial Garden. At the very last minute on Monday, August 19, we made the difficult decision to make burial arrangements with Bonaventure cemetery where we received immediate and excellent service for burial the next day. The purpose of this letter is to implore those who have property at Magnolia to please check on it prior to need. Otherwise, you may find yourself in the same situation that we were in. At the funeral today, in discussing this issue with those at the repast, we discovered there was at least one guest who had deeds for property that she never requested and never paid for. If you are considering buying property at Magnolia Cemetery, remember 'caveat emptor', let the buyer beware. If this letter saves one family from our recent experiences, then it is worth our effort. The Braxton Family

They have cold orange and unflavored water in the lobby. There is also a small market place for snacks and some quick essential items. There is a large atrium in the middle which all the rooms surround that has a lot of seating and tables for hanging out or working. There is also a small bar that opens at night. There is a shuttle that goes to the airport for free. We stayed in a two queen bedroom with one bath. The room was dark, even with all the lights turned on. There was a small sofa in the front of the room and a desk at the back. Amenities included a microwave, safe (that didn't work), iron with board, TV and a fridge. We stayed over the weekend, so noise from the bar and lobby area disrupted our sleep a bit. There are two elevators, but one was broken the whole time and they didn't put a sign up. Overall, the hotel is fine, but would be benefit from a renovation as the rooms and bathrooms appear dated.

Absolutely loved the location, you can literally walk to the outlets and a variety of other shops and restaurants are within 5 minutes of driving. It's also about 10 minutes from the airport. Our room was a queen room and also had a couch. Bathroom was large and very clean. However, I did see small bits of mold in the shower. The beds were super comfortable. The view from the room was really nice too, and overlooked the swimming pool. The lobby area is pretty and also includes a restaurant. Great place to relax and hang out for a bit. You can check out electronically as well. I would definitely stay here again! Note: rewards members can get late check out up to 2 pm, which was helpful because we had a later flight.

I love it. Beautiful…read more I live in a city with a huge, gorgeous, historically relevant cemetery/green space with notable dead folks from history. And it is one of my favorite places. So Bonaventure was always on my list to visit, with or without pop culture references (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) or status as a tourist stop. A little bit outside of the city, but not terribly difficult to get to, there is a small parking lot for visitors, with public toilets and maps available. They have tour options, but you can also just walk yourself around. The big gravesite draws (Johnny Mercer, Conrad Aiken) are well marked and fairly easy to find on your own. The place is beautiful and very well maintained. Large cemeteries were often meant as strolling green spaces, meant to be visited and used. But do be aware and conscientious if there appears to be a service going on. I could have spent ages and ages walking every path and taking in the loveliness. Highly recommend a visit here, with enough time to wander and sit and see.

I didn't spot any parking right away so I decided to drive through, which turned out to be a great way to see more in a short amount of time. I still got out of my car to walk around a bit when I wanted to see something up close. The area is gorgeous, plenty of shade from the beautiful trees. I only stayed for 20 minutes but it was a perfect and quick way to explore the cemetery. It's also free, so nothing better than that!
