A hamburger with the lot for $6.50 in 2012. Eh? Most importantly though, the food is like the fish and chips I grew up with. Don't come to this place for modern, artisan, gourmet, overpriced, panko crumbed, tempura battered, hand cut, pommes frites de blah blah. This is the destination for good old fish and chips, like the ones you used to pick up on your Mongoose BMX. Of course you can also order the more exotic items like potato cakes, dim sims, chicko rolls, crab sticks etc. if you're into culinary adventure. The straight forward food philosophy has also been applied the hamburgers and souvlakis. I'm not sure what variety they use, but the oil is clean so it doesn't taint the food. They also have it at the right temperature so the chips are crispy on the outside, moist in the inside. The fish batter while not the lightest in the world is freshly applied to the fish, which also seems fresh. If you eat it soon after it has been prepared you will not be disappointed. The older guy on the grill doesn't talk much, but the service from the women in the blue aprons is quick and reliable. I for one am hoping time continues to roll past this one.

The owner was there and was friendly and cool (which I appreciate) and we all left raving about what a great place we found. It's getting a 5 star review from me because the food and service were amazing. I asked for a special something (food item not on the menu) and the owner was really nice about it (and said yes). The food here is fantastic and I am a big fan of their flour battered grilled flake. It tastes amazing and has just the right amount of flavour and salt. The chips are pretty standard - I've had a few experiences with very dry overcooked chips there. They serve a veggie burger for only $5.50 and it is massive. Definitely good value there. Other great aspects about Cleo's are: - the staff are super nice - the store is clean - they are open all day long for six days of the week *Do note that they don't accept cash. I get theres a market for the hipster reincarnations of fish/burger joints though I am usually left underwhelmed in the price/service ratio. Call me old fashioned but I don't want attitude or a philosophy with my bag of greasy food. This place is handy because they also retain their ma and pa pricing. Minimum chips and gravy for around$3.70, the serves are massive and im never able to finish it on my own. They also serve some of the best fried flake ive eaten, though the expectations are not overly high. There is also the usual burger/with the lot, grilled fish, potato cake, and souvlaki options. We got a battered piece, a grilled piece and some pieces of battered calamari. Unlike many fish and chip shops they don't overdo it on the batter. You can still actually taste the fish and it is very good. The chips are pretty damn good too. And overall it wasn't too pricy whatsoever. It's a shame there isn't a Saltwater Grill near me or an equivalent, because I would be eating there a lot.

The fare is standard old-style fish and chips with no pomp or bluster and I love them for that fact alone. They don't try and force manky day-old salads at you, nor do they quibble over a small order. And they do a kid's pack! It fuckin' rules. In fact, all their deals on the back of the takeaway menu are super good. If there's a gripe to be found here is that they (along with almost every chipper in town) still serve flake as 'flake' rather than labelling it as shark for the dummies. It's a small blemish on an otherwise awesome business however. Their burgers are tops too.
