Great thorough inspection was done and no pressure to fix now but an estimate given if I wanted to get the work done. My husband originally discovered this location back in 2018 when he was having an obscure and serious issue with his car, and literally every other auto shop he called refused to help him. However, the people here made an effort to help and got his situation sorted out. After that we started going there for our car inspection and found them to be a very honest company, and affordable to boot. All the work they have done on my vehicle has been of good quality, and done quite quickly. I've been coming to John's for my annual inspections my entire driving life. Seriously, John's was my dad's go-to place for state inspections and hard-to complete repairs. So naturally I ended up there and haven't had a reason to change. I like to (try to) do my own repairs and my father is very handy as well. John knows this fact and will always stop to ask before doing any required work he discovers during inspection. I've also driven some "older" cars (cough over200,000miles cough) and when we weren't comfortable tackling a project, I knew I was in good hands with John's Auto. Again, if he discovered an issue he'd quickly bring it to our attention and also be honest on whether it would be cheaper for us to do ourselves. GREAT experience at John's. I stopped by with a heat shield that was dragging on the pavement. 2nd-generation Joe got this fixed quickly while I waited. I was also very impressed with how clean the office area was kept, including additional Covid-safety precautions. About one week later, my husband took his truck in for an overheating issue. Joe took the time to listen to the history & symptoms that he had experienced, and presented a logical approach to diagnosis what could be causing the trouble. Would you believe - another mechanic had installed the thermostat backwards. And failed to flush the "Stop-Leak" from the radiator. What a relief to discover that the repair was relatively inexpensive. Another garage had suggested that the head gasket needed to be replaced. We were trying to buy a car today from a private buyer and wanted it inspected. We found John's on Yelp and thank GOD!!! They did an expert inspection and we learned that the seller was (ahem) less than completely honest. For instance: Seller: the timing belt is new. Johns: it was changed maybe at 40,000 miles ( 115,000 miles on the car) They were so nice. and saved us from a really bad deal. I was having a tough time finding a mechanic that felt comfortable working on my Cadillac. It's an older model and I understood. This place said they could take care of it no problem. I brought it in, everyone was kind and professional. A bit pricey but they got the job done and I'll probably go back because they did such a great job and my BS radar never went off. They only issue is the location...not only is it in a WEIRD area of Philadelphia but it's like in the cut behind some other business. Took a couple times around the block to find it. read more

I am a shade tree mechanic, so I have a fair knowledge of my vehicles. Had 2 rusted brake lines replaced on a 98 Honda Accord plus mechanical inspection. Probably about average to slightly below average (for a non-dealer shop. Dealer would be 50-100% more) price considering the work involved (2 hrs). John drove me home and back because car had to stay overnight. More importantly, he didn't find any unnecessary "gotcha" problems during inspection - and I get that often at other inspections (like a missing anti-vibration brake clip - please). Waiting area is very clean and pleasant. Easy parking. Very easy scheduling. John does not talk down to customers and is not pushy with extra items. Women should feel comfortable coming here. This place is great. After having a bad experience at a family-recommended auto repair shop in Ambler, I was worried about taking my car somewhere new. Well, it's been 3 years now and I'm still an extremely happy customer of John's. He's fair, honest, and reasonably priced. On one occasion, my fiance's check engine light came on, and he took it to John for a look. John told him there was nothing wrong--the dealership had set the light to come on after a certain number of miles. So John reset it and didn't charge us anything for the trouble of looking at it. Had a really vexing problem about a year ago with the yellow "car needs service" light going on every time I backed up on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier. (This is a common problem on a lot of Cavaliers.) Those guys ran some tests and found the problem and the service engine light does not go on anymore and the charges were reasonable and fair. That's comforting to know because auto dealerships try to sell you a car every time you take the one you like into the shop. This, on the other hand, is pretty much like having a brother or uncle who can service your car and you can be sure they are not going to rip you off. Great for me because I use my Cavalier to putz around the Northeast and want to get it from 138,000 to 200,000 before I purchase I new car. read more

I went to John's based on other reviews on Yelp and wanted to pay it forward by leaving my own thoughts. I'm not from the area and was really nervous about finding an auto repair shop because of all the horror stories you hear of people getting ripped off and scammed by recommending services not necessary. I went to John's because my check engine light was turned on, my cruise control quit working, and my AC wasn't cooperating. I dropped my car off (John personally offered to drop me off at work if I needed it) and spoke to them later in the day about the problems. Joe spoke with me over the phone and was very professional. He told me that my AC was an issue, but summer was nearly over so I shouldn't worry about that until later. He recommended I fix the emissions issue though, which would fix the cruise control as well. When I came to the office to pick up my car Joe was in the office. I asked him point blank would he fix the emissions issue if he was planning to sell the car to a dealer in the next 6-9 months. He said no way, and the problem wouldn't leave me stranded on the side of the road or even show any real issues until about a year down the road. If I was going to sell my car, don't fix it. I was really impressed by that....all he had to say was "yep, fix it" and I would of dropped my credit card to get it done. Due to his honesty, they won themselves another returning customer. Such a great place with a friendly atmosphere and they treat you with absolute respect. I'll be going back here when I need my car inspected or anything else. read more

I was looking at used cars at a couple of dealerships in the Philly area, but I live in Jersey. I wanted a reliable shop to inspect any car before I bought it. John's had great reviews, so I went there. First they looked at a 2006 Volvo for me. I dealt with Joe, who I guess was the owner or manager. After having the mechanic go over the car (the mechanic was excellent also- not sure of his name) Joe took me to the garage and pointed out the things they found- a damaged water pump for one- explained what repairs would involve and cost. Joe also asked what the vehicle was listed for and what I was thinking of offering and told me if he felt it was reasonable, which I really appreciated! He charged me $75 for this visit. I did not end up getting the Volvo, so I brought a 2008 Cadillac SUV to him a few days later. He charged me $50 this time (thanks Joe!) and again gave me same great feedback using the same mechanic. No major issues with the Caddy but they did find a leaking power steering pressure hose which the dealer agreed to replace as part of the deal, and I did end up buying it. Another mechanic at home also concurred that besides some needed maintenance, I did get a good car. If I lived closer, I would certainly be bringing my cars to Joe and his team.
