Driving from Auckland to Hot Water Beach, we went through Tairua. Since we'd mostly seen random roadside cafes, the modern signage and promise of tacos drew us in. My food was good, and this felt very local. The service was maybe a little too casual. Some attention to detail would go a long way. I ordered a chicken sandwich from the specials board, and it was pretty dang delish! I can't remember what all it had on it, but it had a lot of toppings, including some delicious remoulade-like sauce, fried onions, and pineapple.
My husband ordered three fish tacos and a corndog. He liked his tacos, but he had to ask for his corndog two or three times. When it finally came, it was cold in the middle like it had been frozen. He wasn't thrilled, but I really liked my food and the cashier was cool to talk to. Not many good drink offerings; you're kinda down to canned/bottled sodas and water. I also had to go to the bathroom and I had to walk about three blocks to use a public bathroom at the park. No bathroom for paying customers? If there was one, I missed it. read more
