Like the railway next door, this place is very Coromandel, and you must visit the cafe when you visit the railway. It's very rustic, and not a little bit hippy. The food has immaculate and fancy presentation (flowers, but not pretentious). I had a tempeh wrap, and even though I don't really like tempeh, it was awesome. Also had by my son were some very acceptable pancakes (crepes, if you're reading in American ;-) and my mother had high praise for her burger. If there's only one place you eat in Coromandel, made it here.

If this business was sitting anywhere on the beach you would have to stand in line for an hour to place your order. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights.
