I ordered two salmon specialty rolls - fresh and delicious! I especially liked the mayo sauce. Fast and pleasant service.

3.5 stars We had wanted to try Johnny Roll House for quite awhile, but, because they were closed on Sundays, our timing never aligned. However, we recently had a craving for sushi on a Saturday evening, and I called to place a pick-up order. The woman that answered the phone was very friendly, and, when I arrived to gather my order, she was just as pleasant. In fact, as I left the restaurant with my food, the sushi chefs even wished me well. In terms of the space, it was definitely on the smaller side with only a few tables, but a decent-sized sushi bar. The atmosphere was casual, but it was decorated nicely enough to work as a dine-in spot also. We had ordered a few rolls to share, and when I got home with the bag, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the restaurant had thrown in two complimentary soups and two salads. The miso soups were creatively served in paper coffee cups with plastic lids, which managed to work perfectly, because, since it was a cooler evening, I wound up drinking my broth like a beverage. In fact, to that end, it was more like a drink, since we only received two small squares of tofu and a piece of seaweed in each of ours. Regardless, the soup tasted good, though the seaweed was a bit off the usual color. The side salads were not great. The lettuce was wilted, and there were way too many onions. The dressing was also a bit more tangy than other ginger dressings I had had. In terms of the rolls, we ordered one standard and two specialty offerings to share. The common Eel Avocado Roll was packed with fish and large slices of avocado, and it was honestly one of the better versions of this variety that we had had. The Super Fire Roll included yellowtail and scallion inside, which was then topped with torched tuna, eel sauce, spicy mayo, and fresh jalapeño. The color of the yellowtail was on the pink side, which at first gave me pause, but research proved was actually fine. Aside from that, I thought it was a tasty roll. Our last one was the Princess Christiana Roll, which had a center of crabmeat, avocado, and cucumber, as well as toppings of baked salmon, eel sauce, and an actual salad with lettuce, crabmeat, and tobiko. Now, the restaurant had a massive list of unique rolls, which made it hard to select what to order, but this one seemed like one of the most unique of the bunch. I had never seen fully-cooked salmon used in sushi, nor had I ever seen a roll topped with a mound of salad. While the fish all seemed fresh, some of the avocado was browning, and the lettuce was once again wilted. In this case, I would have said that the greens might have gotten too warm on top of the baked fish, but the side salad was just as limp. In addition, we had ordered the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna and jalapeno appetizer, which we just ate along with the maki rolls. The rice patty could have been crunchier and the fish could have been pinker in color, but it tasted fine overall. We agreed that Johnny Roll House had some positive and some negative points. While we had had better sushi elsewhere, their food was still good, which meant that we could keep it as an option if we were looking for a sushi spot. (Speaking of, I should note that they did not offer many cooked Japanese items, aside from Beef Teriyaki.) read more

Went here for a late lunch with my friend. The staff is so beyond kind. The environment is clean and the staff even pulled chairs out for us. We got three rolls and they were all fantastic. The fish wasn't fishy and the shrimp tempura roll was a perfect size. I will go again read more

I tried Johnny's after reading the many positive reviews, but we had a mixed experience. This is primarily due to my wife biting into a piece of salmon sushi and pulling a pubic hair out of her mouth. This completelly ruined her appetite and it was early in the meal. Something like this is careless by the chefs. Aside from the pube, the staff were friendly, place nicely decorated, it's BYOB and same price cash or credit. They put a container of some unlabeled items in our takeout bag ("on the house"). We didn't know what it was, but dipped one in soy sauce with wasabi anyway. It was a fried Oreo and kinda yucky. Everyone in my house tried it and didn't like it. Thank you anyway. The"sushi for 2" (other than the pube) was a nice spread. A bit pricey, but fresh and included a very tasty bluefin tuna. The sashimi deluxe had a good spread as well, but the pieces of sashimi were too thick. Some pieces could barely be chewed and I even pulled a chewy piece of fatty tendon from one. Fish quality tasted fresh. However, between the pube and some overly chewy sashimi pieces, I'm between 3 and 4 stars, but that hair is killing me. Please improve sanitary skills. read more

I'm blown away by this local sushi gem. Their tuna especially is simply extraordinary--buttery soft and bursting with fresh flavor. Every piece was expertly crafted and beautifully presented. We had our two small children with us and everyone was so kind - would definitely recommend for family outings. This place was good. I would give the Sushi 3 to 4 stars at best. I wouldn't say that the flavors were super exciting. There are some other local sushi places that I think have impressed me a bit more with the flavors. Although I've spoken to other friends who really like this place and say the fish is very fresh. It was. The fish tasted fresh and everything was done well, but I think the flavors could stand out a little bit more on some of the specialty rolls. Also, I was a little disappointed that my son was outside, and I asked for a paper cup of water and the lady at first told me she didn't have any and I would have to buy a bottle of water. This is after having already purchased about $60 worth of sushi. Finally, I told her it was for a toddler and she miraculously produced a paper cup and was able to provide some water. We ordered for the first time and unfortunately were disappointed. The salmon in my Philadelphia roll did not look fresh and had a weird smell. My spicy tuna roll had an odd taste and was made with cucumber- i have never had cucumber put in my spicy tuna roll. This is the place we've been looking for. Spicy tuna crispy rice. Yup. All the sushi - 5 stars. Spicy seaweed salad - kinda gross. But totally who cares. They were lovely when I picked up my order and the restaurant is very much exactly what you want a solid sushi spot to be - small, quiet and dominated by the experienced sushi chef in the center. Wow wow wow - I can't believe I didn't come here sooner. JRH is delicious and has some of the freshest, best quality sushi I've had in this area. My husband and I first decided to eat here and we each had 3 rolls (which were all spectacular). The next two occasions, we decided to have take out and it was just perfect. Orders were ready when they were supposed to be. Additionally, we were surprised to have received a complimentary appetizer when we placed our takeout order - it was unexpected but really nice. The place is small but decorated very nicely. I love the atmosphere there but the freshness of the sushi cannot be beat! We used to regularly order from a different sushi spot in nearby Westwood but JRH has become our new favorite. read more

The place was ok... food was average, so not order the fried Oreos, you will be extra disappointed... unless you want a saggy cookie loaded with oil, neither order the Japanese drink, it makes your life a living hell! Is has a little glass ball inside that stops you from drinking freely! Service was very good... but the overall experience doesn't make me return... I guess the amount of good reviews is due that the place is located next to the training station... one more thing...I found it very unpleasant when the staff were cleaning the tables with a strong detergent smell while people is eating... Johnny Roll is a neighborhood sushi place that if you are not looking for it you might just drive passed. Once you are inside, there is a small bar that you can sit at and bring your own bottle (they do not have a bar otherwise). Seems pretty busy with take out We got the "Basic Roll Platter" (10 rolls) - All were good, prepared quite well and, overall, did not disappoint. Although our waitress was very sweet, service was a bit slow, we had to quite a few times flag her to refill water or green tea. Also, one of our rolls were wrong and they brought it wrong again for the 2nd time. Not a huge deal, probably some language barrier. All in all food was pretty tasty read more

I have never been a fan of sushi until I had it from here. The sushi from Johnny Roll House is absolutely amazing & I would recommend it to all types of sushi eaters: novice & experts. I ordered at the establishment for takeout. The staff was extremely friendly & they quickly put in my order for me. While waiting, I took a look around the place. It may look small from the outside but it's actually quite spacious once you go inside. The noise level is very quiet & you can enjoy good conversation without having to talk over anyone. There's seating both at the bar & the back room for you to choose from as well. Just a helpful tip: it is BYOB so make sure you bring what you want to drink that night. My food took about 10 minutes & the staff wished me well upon leaving. Once home & having the sushi, I was taken away at how good it was. I ordered the "G" on the menu which was: Spicy Tuna, California, Chicken Tempura, & Shrimp Tempura. All the rolls were delicious, but I especially liked the Spicy Tuna. Johnny has creative rolls named after regulars. Check out the board inside for some sushi specials. Service has always been so attentive and friendly. Byob so bring on the beer and wine and they will have it chilled for you. We have been a couple times now post renovation and it's quickly made it on our Fri dinner rotations. read more

I was surprised to find an omakase area so close to where I live and I've only tried omakase in NYC, so I was looking forward to this experience. The omakase experience comes with 3 appetizers, 8 pieces of sushi, and ice cream. We also ordered another roll to top off our meal. Each piece of sushi was quite fresh and overall my family and I enjoyed our meal. Johnny Roll House is also famous for their rolls, which we had to try. The price is extremely reasonable especially in comparison to NYC, so definitely worth checking out! read more

I stopped by for a spicy tuna/salmon lunch combo and wow! I was taken aback not only by how fresh everything was, but scrumptious too! The owner makes the sushi himself on an open counter in plain view and greeted me both upon entry and exit. When you unwrap the bag from the to-go order that is your lunch box, a hand drawn smiley face with the word "enjoy!" stares back at you. I'm not a sushi fanatic but I can tell when a place supplies themselves with cheap fish vs. premium fish and I have to say, nothing about my experience here came across as skimpy. My boyfriend grew up in a neighboring town and always wanted to try this place out after hearing great things about it. We were definitely not disappointed! Like many sushi places, it is BYOB, so we decided to stop by the Wegman's down the road for a bottle of wine to bring to dinner. Upon entering, you see the sushi bar with bar seating. Around the back is a small space for some additional seating. The interior design is a little overwhelming with its bright colors and wall paper scenery of what seems like a Japanese town, but the food quickly made up for my mixed first impression. I ordered the spicy crabmeat salad, then shared the combo of a California roll and Johnny roll with my boyfriend. I was pleasantly surprised with how fresh the crabmeat salad was! I'm used to other sushi restaurants dousing the romaine lettuce in spicy mayo and topping it with some crabmeat, but at Johnny Roll House, the crabmeat was carefully shredded with a light oil dressing that had a surprising kick of heat. The California roll was very fresh - I had no complaints. My boyfriend loved the rolls he got and we were welcome to stay after eating to finish our bottle of wine. While drinking the remainder of our wine, we noticed that many families came in and said hello directly Johnny. His staff immediately greeted everyone as they came in and left the restaurant. I like their varied rolls. Prices are a bit high. But what bothered me was, sushi chefs spend years in training. They know everything there is about sushi and sashimi. And their knives are like their children. So how come my firefighter roll wasn't cut all the way through? That is like a mortal sin in the sushi world. You attempt to pick up a section and the bottom drags the next slice and sometimes other slices with it. What a mess. Johnny, I go to your store because I don't want to head up to Nanuet and wait. I also enjoy some of your roll combinations. But one more mess up and you get the official boycott. Sharpen your knives and make sure to cut the rolls properly. The lunch specials are great and the sushi is quality... I got the 2-roll maki roll lunch special that came with a miso soup and salad ($8.95). Great deal, and the salmon was very fresh.
