As a child, I always dreamed what is at the rainbow, I wanted to travel and see what joyful things…read morethey actually were, whether it be at the other side of the world, I wanted to go there, Little did I know that I can actually find this joy, at Piccadily Market. Well to contradict myself, I came to this business when they had a pop up stall at The Lowry Food fair, they normally are based Thursday to Saturday on Piccadily Market, it is still the same people who go around to other venues, they even do delivery. They sell small cupcakes for £1 and have a great range for gluten free, vegan, they do lots of cakes for lots of different dietary requirements. The girl on the stall told me she runs the business and her friend makes the gluten free seperaty at her home, and bags them all up to avoid cc what is fantastic to show, she had some knowledge. The cakes are very good value, I would even expect to pay that price or even more for that size cake with that quality, for gluten free a big piece of cake, £2 is great especially when they sell small gluten cupcakes for £1. Most cakes including GF can be frozen too. The cakes tasted really fresh and they did have nice icing on it too, they were quite moist although a little cream would of sweetened the deal, you could even taste fresh pieces of orange in the orange flavored cake, which was fantastic and this company really does show how to cook gluten free cakes and charge a price, which is certainly fair when she could charge more. Everyone who I have been served by on the stall seem nice and the majority of their cakes are however I found the banana one to be awful, and the Chocolate to not stand out very well, although still edible it wasn't great although better than the banana. - More days open - Possibly in more locations however not a big must for the extra star - Seating would be good - I also want to try more of the cakes before upgrading to 5. - Maybe have a store at least once a week/fortnight what is easier to get in, for example with a closer car park which does not mean you have to go into a city center to get your beloved treat. - Some of the cakes are not so nice. UPDATE: Sadly I feel this business deserves a downgrade to a single one star due to the fact the cakes are beginning to taste hard and stail and they lack the quality they once had, which is a real shame, perhaps this is due to a change in how the cakes are made or stored, so for example if they are going to be left out all day on a market, they need to work hard to make sure taste doesn't suffer because of it, and sadly they don't seem to do that hence the downgrade is really needed for Over the Rainbow.

Yelp? Can't you fork out for a sixth star for Hey Little Cupcake? Seriously, it just doesn't seem…read morefair that I'm celebrating their permanent placement in Spinningfields and am unable to give them a spare star for keeps. Nevertheless, I'm overjoyed that my very favourite cupcakery has moved from their temporary pop-up shop to Little Quay Street at the back of our business district, on that same walkway the suits use to nip to Tesco for milk, sandwiched between a sandwich (LOLz) shop (La Piazza) and Nando's. Er, talk about location location location. What office worker is going to be able to resist a box of cupcakes during the milk run? What lunch buyer or Nando's diner would forgo dessert here? You'd have to have a near Buddhist self-discipline and willpower to do so. And why deny yourself? These cupcakes are everything a cupcake should be - cute, sexy, melt-in-the-mouth, piled with delectable I-don't-even-want-to-know-what's-in-it frosting, and the sponge? Well, I have a confession to make. I'm the kind of person that eats the filling in the sandwich and gets tired of the bread, and the same often goes for cupcakes where I'm concerned. Not with these little treasures. The cake batter manages to be lightly whipped, moist and dense all at the same time. Anybody who disagrees needs to take their tastebuds to the doctor. Stat. I tried two newbies (for me), the red velvet cupcake and the Nutella-themed variety, and as always they were pure perfection. I really need to try the Canadian Syrup and Irish Cream flavours too, mental note for next time! I also noticed an extra addition... brownies. Awesome. Pure awesome. I had to snaffle a couple to take away, and sure enough they ticked all the brownie boxes too. The ladies can bake any cupcake dairy and gluten free, and they're some of the friendliest people you'd ever have the pleasure of meeting. Plus, the shop looks absolutely stunning, as does the artwork. And they just about killed me with joy when I spotted Illy Coffee and Teapigs Tea. Long will I continue to find excuses to return to the business district if only for my box of Hey Little Cupcakes!

Working on Spinningfields means I've eaten my share of Hey Little Cupcake in the last 18 months…read more The store continues to hold its kitsch charm with white and pink decorations, plus baking items, cards and prints available to purchase alongside the sweet treats. Our most recent visit was to purchase a box of 6 for the team back in the office. It was late afternoon but still plenty of stock to choose from, plus brownies on the top shelf. I've also had some delicious marshmallow ice cream in the past, which I believe will come back in the summer. Service was friendly enough and patient with the length of time it took for us to choose our 6 flavours. The only confusion was that they had Tweeted about Nutella cupcakes earlier in the day but had none in stock! They did, however, have some special Chinese New Year cupcakes which was a favourite in the office. After scoffing down the monkey topped CNY exclusive, I think I prefer these plainer cakes; we were treated to some Valentine's Day mini-cupcakes last month which were just as delicious, simple vanilla sponge and light creamy icing. A Spinningfields staple which I'm sure will continue to attract visitors from all over.

Held twice a month in Manchester city centre, Real Food Market sees the North West's farmers…read moredismount their tractors to give Manchester's pasty-faced masses a taste of real nutrition as Mother Nature intended. (I've uploaded over 30 photos, so do have a look!) There are about thirty market stalls in all - hot takeway foods for you to eat on a bench in Piccadilly Gardens, plus apple tarts, fudge, cupcakes, cheeses, preserves and crafts to take home. (As a vegetarian, I didn't pay too much attention to additional non-vegetarian food, but there are stalls in this category which can boast having been featured several times on local television.) I paid £2.50 for a container of Carrot & Coriander Soup the size of a small bucket, mopped up with a Caribbean style vegetarian patty, £1.50. The soup was great, the patty OK. From the Caribbean stall I would be more likely to skip the patty next time and try the Caribbean vegetable curry on rice & beans. Or try something else from the soup stall. Plus, check out Trove Foods, which sells homemade jams and marmalades in recycled jars. http://www.trovefoods.co.uk/home I took home jars of Seville Marmalade and Carrot & Almond Jam - delicious stuff, and a lovely young couple run this business together. Here's a summary of the rest of the stalls and again, do check out my photos as that will give you a good idea: * Hot foods: fresh soups (Carrot & Coriander, Smoked Sausage & Butterbean, Roasted Red Pepper & Tomato, Leek & Potato), BBQ chicken, burgers and big piles of juicy fried onions. Caribbean patties (including vegetarian) plus curried goat, jerk chicken or vegetarian curry with rice & beans. Samosas, spicy chickpea wraps, seekh kebabs. * Sweet foods: patisserie (apple or apricot tarts), homemade sweets and fudges, home baking, cupcakes by Cupcake Palace, retro macaroons. * For your kitchen pantry: Trove Foods homemade marmalade, jams, and spicy sauces and pickles; Mrs. Kirkham's artisan cheeses. * Crafts: bags, African crafts and jewellery, enamelled tableware. I am still quite a Manchester Markets newbie, but I would say the Real Food Market is neck-and-neck with the Arndale Market Food Court and definitely worth timing a visit to town on the second or fourth weekend in the month to catch it. It's all good retro, low carbon, tasty fun - Real Food Market FTW!

People are looking more and more to their local producer, knowing they're getting eco-friendly quality straight from the source, and I'm all for it. You can pretty much get anything here, great fresh breads, conserves, meats, dairy, speciality cheeses, pies, pickles, ales, puddings. It's an epicurian's paradise and always puts a smile on my face. It runs Friday and Saturday on the 2nd and 4th weekend of the month between 10-6pm.
