The plaque reads: "The chair is an exemplar and inspiration for future generations to emulate and perpetuate the achievements of our time-honored furniture designers and craftsmen . . . The original chair was the creation of the famous American designer Duncan Phyfe. Erected 1950. Thomas Johnson - Del. James Harvey - Sculp." A smaller, newer placard beneath reads: "Local Historic Landmark. Designated by City Council. September 2000. Thomasville Historic Preservation Commission." Locally, it's known as "The Big Chair." It's a huge upholstered chair located in downtown Thomasville, North Carolina. It's a symbol of the city's furniture industry. Thomasville is nicknamed "Chair City," while nearby High Point is known as the "Furniture Capital of the World." I was born and raised in High Point. To this day, any time my parents have out-of-town visitors, my dad loves taking them to see the World's Largest Chest of Drawers in High Point (https://www.yelp.com/biz/worlds-largest-chest-of-drawers-high-point) and The Big Chair in Thomasville. As a kid, I wouldn't bat an eye at these things. I thought they were boring. As I got older, I thought they were corny. However, as I continue to get older, I'm starting to appreciate them a bit more. Now, I think they are fun to show to out-of-towners too. Corny, but fun. I guess I'm turning into my dad. An equivalent roadside attraction where I work now is The Big Chicken in Marietta, Georgia. Online reports say the chair is 30 feet tall, but I think that may be misleading. I think the 30-foot measurement takes into account both the chair and the large stone pedestal upon which it stands. The chair is traditional and ornate in design. It looks like it's made of dark wood, but it's actually constructed of concrete and steel. Visiting the chair is a breeze. There's a large free city parking lot across the street. You can park there and walk over. Landscaping around the chair varies and is constantly changing throughout the seasons. It's generally nice. There's not much to see or do in downtown Thomasville, especially on the weekends when most of the businesses on Main Street are closed. It's a quaint little area though. The intersection is relatively busy and sits next to a pair of railroad tracks. Take a look at the pictures. That's pretty much it.

It was unveiled in 1950 as a tribute to the town's furniture making heritage, modeled after a Duncan Phyfe armchair and built of steel, concrete, and Indiana limestone to replace an earlier wooden version from 1922 that didn't survive the weather. It's not the biggest chair in the world, but it's definitely a big chair, towering 30 feet over the plaza and impossible to miss. The only downside is that you can't climb up and sit in it with your feet dangling, which would make for a fantastic photo, but even from the ground, it's a fun, quirky stop that celebrates exactly what put Thomasville on the map. The Big Chair is 30 feet high and represents Chair City, as Thomasville, as it is one of the leading furniture-making towns. This particular chair is made of steel and concrete. The base is made of limestone. The original chair in 1922 was made of pine wood, and it rotted over the years. So it was rebuilt in 1948. Lyndon B Johnson stood on the ten-foot-wide seat back in 1960 during a political campaign. But for visitors, we can't climb or sit in the chair. We need to view it from the ground. When I visited, the tulips were in bloom, so that just added to the experience. The chair is very large but just as detailed as a regular-sized chair. It is just a quick stop, but I left impressed.

The best place to park is likely at the lot across the street. The Chest of Drawers is on a one-way street, so you might need to plan which lane to get in if traffic is heavy. High Point is considered the "furniture capital of the world." So the 38 feet high road side attraction is fitting. The piece was originally built in 1926 to welcome people to the area and promote the furniture. The design was different, and the bureau was smaller and had a mirror. It was painted white with floral accents. It wasn't a functioning piece of furniture as the drawers didn't open. Then in 1996, Sid Lenger, a High Point craftsman and designer, transformed the piece. He wanted a proper chest of drawers, so he designed and built one with hefty brass handles. This version also doesn't open, but is meant to look like a more realistic piece of high-end furniture. He also added the two pairs of six-foot-tall socks to acknowledge the hosiery industry. I hope whatever work is being done to the chest of drawers preserves the cherry wood finish's color as intended.

What is relatively unique is that the highway is actually crossed over between exits 96 and 102, making each of the exits a right-lane one even though it is between the two highways. After seeing ads blasted all over Greensboro for this haunt, my husband & I decided to check it out…read moreas an alternative to other haunts in the area. While I understand that they are fairly new, there are some serious operational management issues that could absolutely be handled better after 4 years of experience. For starters, there were about 100-150 people in line, yet it took 2.5 hours to get into the haunt. They took groups of about 7 at a time, 8 when they could, but I only saw groups of 7 being admitted. If you do the math that is about one group every 22 minutes. That is an insane amount of time to make each group wait to go for seemingly no reason at all. I understand needing traffic control to avoid congestion in the haunt, but 22 minutes? Absolutely not. On top of waiting a long time, you're standing still for a majority of the wait which can be hard on the body. Moving while waiting lessens that pain, but we were in such a small cue for such a long time that we would be still, then move maybe 6 feet every 22 minutes. There's also nothing to do while you wait other than watch a band that is next to the line, not in front of it, playing songs that sound the same back to back. It got to the point where I would lose track of when one song began and another ended because they were nearly identical. (No haunt with live music can seem to get this right) Now the actual haunt - their main promotional claim is that it's an hour-long. It was about 40-min. The group I was with did not "rush through" as the scare actors told us not to do at the beginning, yet it was done within 2/3 of an hour. I wouldn't have an issue with that if we hadn't waited so long to get in. The scares became extremely predictable a little less than halfway through. They started following a beat where the jump-scare would land at the same time in each room, falling into a predictable cadence. The rooms were fun, but the originality and thoughtfulness of design concepts varied greatly. You had some rooms that were very unique, well thought-out and fun, then other rooms that didn't have a digestible story around them. An example is the taxidermy room. The scare in that room is just a man in the corner yelling at random intervals. What's the story? Why would a man in that room be randomly screaming? He wasn't covered in blood or fur or anything... it made no sense. But then, in another room, you had a guy making meat out of humans, and to get out you had to go into his fridge! That one was so clever and the scare actor was super engaging. My last gripe was seeing a live snake INSIDE of the haunt. Seriously, what is up with live snakes being used as props in Triad haunts? If I had a nickel for every time a snake was put in a stressful situation in a Triad haunt, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it has happened twice! Listen, I don't like that WOT does it either, but at least they don't have it in the middle of the haunt with loud noises and flashing lights. Over all, while this haunt could be enjoyable for some, I think they have a lot left to figure out before it's great. Some may say "give them time, it's only been 4 years!" My response to that would be that I know from personal experience as I am an operational manager - it doesn't take 4 years to get it right.
