I've been swimming laps in San Diego for 4 years, and I have just now discovered the wonderful…read moreoutdoor public pools! I first saw that there was one in Balboa Park (which is currently still under winter maintenance), and upon some further research have discovered there are ~15 pools around San Diego with lap lane hours during the week and weekends, with a drop in rate of $4 per day! I've suffered through so many swims at the indoor pool at 24 hour fitness, not knowing there were these available to me! Specifically regarding the pool at Carmel Valley Rec Center. I came on a weekday evening (5:30pm) in May. So I assume things may change in the summer. But I had a lovely experience! The outside of the Rec center, and parking area is much nicer than some of the other rec centers around San Diego I've visited. I paid my $4 entry fee and went through the locker room. Of note, there are no lockers at this pool (there are at some of the others), however I also felt much safer leaving my bag out on a chair at this one than some of the others, there are showers. The water was warm enough, but not too warm during my laps. I swam for 45 minutes and had the whole lane to myself the entire time. It looks like there's a big slide that goes into the pool (that wasn't open while I was there), as well as a cute play area for kids that's right next to the pool.

This place was comically bad for kids. If you've ever seen the old SNL Jim Carey hot tub lifeguard…read moreskit, this was our exact without exaggerating experience. There was like 8 kids there total.. and the lifeguards keep screaming at the kids on their bullhorns. Direct quote: "no holding your breath underwater, it could be mistaken for drowning" The majority of the pool was laned off for lap swimming during the 1.5hrs that the pool was open for free swimming. The only reason to go here is to giggle at this real life SNL sketch being acted out. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_d2XfUXn0kY&ra=m

Hands down, the best one on one swim lessons! I had tried may different "franchise"/local swim…read moreschools and nothing seemed to help my girls learn. But I committed to the 10 week program this past fall and within the first week I knew this was going to be worth my time and money! Lauren and Krista are both amazing at what they do and not once did they let our girls give up. They do this because they are passionate about teaching kids how to swim and survive! I can't recommend them enough! I'm already looking forward to the short refreshers they offer closer to summer time! FYI the pools are heated and even if it's cold outside, the kids will not be freezing in the pools!

We've had our children take lessons with Krista at Swim Synergy for the past two summers, and I…read morecan't recommend her enough. We relocated from San Francisco to San Diego and moved into a home with a pool, so making sure our kids were safe around water was one of my top priorities. I actually scheduled swim lessons for our daughter, Emmy, with Krista before we even moved here! Emmy started lessons when she was 2, continued again the next summer at 3, and this past summer our son Hayes joined in at just 1.5 years old. Krista has such a gift with young children -- she's patient (yet firm), calm, and knows exactly how to make them feel comfortable and confident in the water. We've seen incredible progress each summer. Both kids have not only learned essential water safety skills, but they also love being in the pool now. The peace of mind knowing my young children are safe around water is truly priceless, and it makes living in Southern California (and being around so much water) so much less stressful. Swim Synergy has been such a wonderful experience for our family, and we're already looking forward to lessons again next summer!

I really want to like Bay Club because the potential is obvious, but the execution is…read moredisappointing. I used to go to Life Time, and the difference is night and day. It honestly doesn't take much to make a gym great, but Bay Club feels stuck in the past. The men's locker room is gross and smells. There's a persistent musky odor that's hard to stomach, likely coming from old carpet that's clearly been there for years. The men's showers are equally bad, with hair everywhere, inconsistent cleanliness, and low water pressure, which makes the entire experience feel unhygienic and poorly maintained. The men's sauna is especially concerning. There appears to be little to no ventilation, creating a heavy, stagnant environment that can allow dangerous CO buildup. On top of that, the walls and benches in the sauna are extremely outdated, reinforcing the sense that this space hasn't been refreshed or properly maintained in a long time. The products provided (shampoo, conditioner, etc.) are low quality and full of questionable ingredients, which feels completely out of place for a club charging premium prices. The weight room is constantly messy, with plates scattered everywhere and mismatched equipment. It feels chaotic instead of intentional. The outdoor gym is another huge missed opportunity. With the space and climate, it could be incredible, but instead it feels underdeveloped and outdated. Overall, everything just feels old and complacent. There's so much opportunity here, yet it seems like no one is pushing to raise the standard. After experiencing what a well-run gym can be, this falls short. I'll probably be canceling soon unless major improvements are made

So they had offered a "trial class"" - had an okay first class, but it was too basic for my children so we decided to not enroll and enroll in another local swim class. BEWARE - what they didn't tell you is that their trial classes cost the same as a class and they auto-register your child for recurrent classes (despite emailing them that we were not enrolling). My children are all in MULTIPLE activities across San Diego, and never once do people offer a trial class only to CHARGE you if you decline automatic enrollment. Very sneaky policy - will never recommend to anyone as "finding the right fit" for your child is definitely not their top priority.

The reason was price,…read morewhat started as $80 a month for one child, which I thought was expensive but tolerable, has recently morphed into $295. That's for 2 kids, so let's double the original $80 and account for inflation over 5 years.... I still don't manage to get anywhere near $295. That's ALOT of money just for a few 30 minute lessons. I also have to add that these lessons were rarely a full 30 minutes, mostly because of other kids in the class showing up late and then huge drama as they get in and fuss with their goggles, while my kid (who did show up on time) sits being ignored. Lessons would routinely not get going until 10 minutes in. The teachers and the pool staff were mostly great, but the value for money has disappeared. The staff who took my cancellation didn't even ask why, and the pool staff said we weren't the first. Maybe Covid is a justification but I doubt when things get back to normal the prices will return to 2019 levels - if they do I might consider returning, but for now we have taken our kids to a different school.
