Doctor John W. Pierce was my primary doctor for over 30 years since he took over the practice of Dr. Mcfadden in noe valley. I could speak to him about everything he listened to all of my concerns and answered all my questions he made me feel comfortable about procedures and he was not judgemental . He took time with his patients . It was a very sad day when he told me he was retiring to this day I have yet to find a doctor to replace him. I'd love to find out if he is still in practice in another state I would go there for treatment I miss talking with him I always felt better after talking with him, and he had the best staff Daniel Chan and his office manager Jessica were the best as well. I had my doubts because he doesn't have many reviews in yelp, and I was only going to give him a try because he is my in-network provider, and close to home, and I'm glad I chose him to be my PCP. He's fun to talk to, and most of all: he is professional! He cares about patients' opinions and suggestions. Finally a doctor that listens to what I'm saying! And has a great sense of humor! And actually diagnosed me with something that seems to be fairly spot on (yes, you guessed it, I'm totally crazy), and gave me advice (and a prescription) that works! After 4 years of having to go to the complete incompetent disaster that is the Berkeley Tang Center, it is so refreshing to have an actual doctor. Not a nurse practitioner, not a whatever student, an actual doctor. One that knows my medical history and remembers me. Dr. Pierce is so friendly and laid back. And he really listens - instead of thinking I'm some dumb college student trying to score pills he actually took me seriously. On top of that, I can't remember the last time a doctor joked with me. Dr Pierce, I believe, is from the old school. That means he listens to the patient and builds a trust bond with them - very important to me because I think the comfort factor with the doctor takes away 50% of my ailment. And, I think, it comes very naturally to him. He was always very patient with my questions and had this big warm smile on his face. The medication he gave me for back pain for spot on. His fees was very reasonable and I easily got an appointment for an early date. What more can you ask for? When you go into his office in the mission district, you can see some poor patients too. I've been visiting PA Chen for the last year and he is fantastic! He is friendly, patient, he listens, and goes out of his way to address questions/concerns. He is also very accessible; for routine visits I have often been able to get same-day or next-day appointments a majority of the time. The receptionist as well as nurses are friendly and professional. The office is public transit accessible. And, the best part is, my visits are always short because they don't make you wait forever the way some doctors offices do. read more

I don't give 5 stars to just anyone, however this doctor's office certainly deserves it. I've had two appointments with PA Daniel Chan, and I have one word for him -- awesome! Daniel has a great bedside manner, and he took the time to patiently listen to my concerns, answer my questions, and give me a thorough exam. I never felt rushed through an appointment like I used to at Kaiser. Daniel followed up with lab results and an ultrasound report in a timely manner, and I appreciated his high level of care and concern. The office staff is very friendly and efficient both in person and over the phone, and I was able to get appointments very easily and without much of a wait. This man is a legend and represents everything that is right in the field of medicine. As a paramedic who has worked with him and seen his patient care, I can attest that he infuses medical know how with a no bullshit attitude. He alternately knows when to express empathy and compassion and when to tell people to shut the hell up. His office does not use any modern EMR/EHR systems and is difficult to get a hold of him even on weekdays during office hours. I've been seeing Dr. Pierce for the last 4 years, he's changed my view on what to expect from a doctor. He's assembled an all-star patient friendly experience from his knowledgeable and always friendly front desk, very respectable wait times and willingness to always spend as much time as needed to assess what's going on. On top of an array of health issues where they've excelled, they also set the bar high on preventative care. I've seen him annually for blood work physicals, Dan and himself have been fantastic in ensuring I truly understand what the results mean, as opposed to many other Doctor offices simply having had their front desk inform me "You're fine." So I'm providing a review with the perspective on the other side. I'm just finishing up a rotation with Dr. Pierce this month (he's generous enough to let a medical student tag along with him), and it's been great! I can only hope to have the same loyal and grateful patient base that he does. He's completely old skool and is just a bad ass at everything he does...and he does it all. He's the kind of doctor you'd expect to find in a small rural town...he's able to take care of everything, knows about everything, and knows patients generationally. He even gives his personal cell phone number out to patients so they can contact him in case of emergency!?! That's unheard of! He has none of the pretentiousness of a big city doc, and is just genuine and keeps it real. So if you want a doc with a wicked sense of humor and is entirely nonjudgmental and understanding of all life situations...go to him. read more

After seeing lots of doctors for years due to a life long issue, I was referred to Dr. Pierce. In less than 6 months I had an appointment where I had no issues or complaints. That has never happened before. He simplified my medications, listened and addressed all my issues and took the time to educate me. I was so shocked to have an appointment with out any issues, I had to tell him. I have been a patient at doctor John Pierce's office at the Portales Medical Group for about 15 + years. PA Daniel Chan has been my doctor for the last 5. Dr. Chan is the one of the best doctors I have ever had. His genuine interest in his patients well being is expressed by his: ability to listen, acknowledgment of a patent's complaint, recommendation of varied and numerous remedies, and to assuage the anxiety (as in my case) that can accompany a painful injury. I always leave the office feeling better because of my doctor's confidence in my efforts to heal my injury. Both Dr. Chan and Dr. Pierce are unique personalities (and very interesting characters: it's actually fun to visit them) in the medical profession. This lends to their ethics, loyalty, honesty and genuine desire to care for and cure their patients. The office staff is awesome as well. Jessica and Lisette are efficient and knowledgeable about how to work with insurance companies. The office is also compassionate. They have given me generous breaks in difficult and uninsured times.
