Other than not offering students a designated unstructured break (reason for only 4 stars) I am pleased with all other aspects. BTW: A friendly heads up, very strict with excessive tardies, which is understandable. Teachers are very involved and admin always makes themselves available (special thank you to Ms. Gomez). Kudos to the lovely ladies in the front office, always a pleasure to see you. ( which was quite often with our excessive tardies, lol) All in all will miss being a part of this family. *almost forgot, much credit to the academic and extracurricular team for consistently exposing and encouraging the students to participate in many various clubs and programs offered both on and off campus.

Let me tell you my experience with them. First, Ms. Frazier got mad at me for not wanting to sing in her class. Even if I wasnt going to be there for the performance. I told her multiple times. "Ms. can I not sing" since she was asking everyone to, one by one, she continued to yell at me and say "does it look like you cant sing. We have 2 weeks left until the performance." Then proceeded to tell me "go sit over there since you dont wanna sing" Ps. I told her I dont wanna sing in a VERY polite way. Not yelling or screaming. In my inside voice. Very glad I don't have her anymore since I am leaving elementary. Along with Ms. Osander, I have had multiple issues with her. One time at beecare/an after-school program, i asked to go inside since i felt like i was having a heatstroke. She told me no. But thankfully another teacher came outside and took everyone in anyway. The next time, she got mad at me for walking fast in order to get a vest in order to open cars for the morning. The last time, she gave me a markdown for apparently BAD BEHAVIOR when I didn't even do anything. Then told my teacher that she NEVER said she never gave me a markdown. whenever she CLEARLY grabbed my tag on my backpack and told me "im giving you a markdown for disruptive behavior" EXCUSEE ME? mind you, this isnt the only tme she lied. Above all of this, thanks to Mr Sena and the relationship he was with my parents and my brother, I feel safe and know my future will go beyond with the support he gives me, if it wasnt for him, I know my parents would move me and my brother to another school. Their core virtues are Truth, Beauty and Goodness. Even though they learn how to be a scholar, it is the emphasis and focus on character that really makes me grateful for this amazing school. And perhaps the pièce de résistance? No pop culture allowed through the front doors. GHWH is currently (2018-2019) serving K-5 but will be growing each year (next year will be K-6, etc.). This free public charter school is incredible and I am looking forward to watching my children grow at Great Hearts Western Hills! Go Spartans!

He was then never allowed to return because the admin said I "lied" on his application because his current school year information was not on there. We applied and were on a waitlist for a long time. I was overjoyed he was admitted as I had heard such great things about the school. This campus specifically has very low tolerance for kids with special needs who need any support. Pretty sad but a reality in many schools in Texas. I just felt it was time to share our experience to save other parents the heart ache. This was several years ago and although it took years to reverse the trauma he is now flourishing. I can only hope the school looked internally and made improvements after this experience as treating a 6 year old child the way they did is NOT ok.

My children transferred to Bernal MS from Briscoe MS for their 8th grade year. They participated in…read moreathletics, dance, and Student to student club. They took opportunities to make new friends and they took advanced classes as well as high school credit classes like algebra and Spanish. When the year was over I asked if they preferred one middle school over the other. They said overall they preferred Bernal because the students, staff, and teachers were more friendly and welcoming. I asked if they had any pros or cons but either campus and one thing my son pointed out was that the Briscoe choir teacher was the reason he decided to quit his love of choir. He said she was very militaristic and not friendly. He said as a 6th grader he was scared of her and dreaded going to her class. I recall reaching out to her to see if we could work on this but her response was negative and I ended up requesting he be moved to another elective. Other than that they said both campuses were good but that they preferred Bernal MS.

Specifically the…read moregirls coach's have such an immense favoritism that they would rather play a girl who's scared of the ball or can't dribble right up and down the field than someone who isn't. One of them (a coach) had told me once that they "didn't know where to put me" and when I would ask for advice to be better gave me half booty cheek answers. Refused to actually coach kids correctly or effectively. This coach in particular that I'm talking about was the head soccer coach my junior year of high school. I never talked back , always did what I thought they expected ,but yet was still not given the equal opportunity to play or be coached. She teared me down even more when I had bad days and never said anything when I did good. The day I decided to up and quit was when most of my team ganged up on me one morning just shouting horrible things at me making me even more de shuffled mentally. Not all of them did but most of the under class men female dogs did and I was nothing but nice and encouraging to them. Keep in mind, the coaches just stood there and WATCHED them tear me down, I walked off the field and went home. I'm not sure if the coaches there are just flat out miserable and enjoy breaking kids spirits but this clearly still affects me if I'm currently writing a review 2 years later. Also Mrs lane who's the attendance person or whatever she does there is trashy and unprofessional , I told her that my uncle took his life and she asked me why I wasn't really at school and when I told her I was depressed and rather be at work she flat out told me "why do you need money you have beats on your head" (the beats headphones). Which if you're reading this , I BOUGHT them with the money I worked for. She also attempted to embarrass me by trying to call me out saying I didn't want to graduate by asking other students in FRONT OF ME "do you want to graduate" and then proceeded to move onto the next person and ask them the same thing. She asked three or four other students near us when we were in the library to fix whatever we needed TOO graduate. There was about 20-30 kids in the library at the time of this event. I walked out in front of her because it doesn't matter who you are you're NOT going to try and tear down a student in front of their peers who's clearly trying to seek help. I was quite literally willing to risk not graduating because again, my uncle took his life and I had been previously depressed that whole year but yet she didn't care until it was the end of the school year and tried to embarrass me ? Many other students at the time agreed that what she did was wrong and that she's ALSO treated them that way or similar. And yes I do have depression, I have papers for it , my mental health was just not okay that year. It's one thing to give constructive criticism and I know for a fact that I CAN take constructive criticism but it's another when you're tearing down a minor to make yourself feel better. These are grown adults in their 40's or 50's like are you serious ? I hope no one ever has to endure the mental torture I have gone through not just there but in life period. This school needs to re-evaluate their whole coaching staff because their treatment just wasn't right. In no world will that ever be right.
