A year ago, Dr. Murphy quite literally saved my life. I was languishing in Seton Medical Center…read more(Don't get me started. They almost killed me--twice!) for four days, on oxygen, without a diagnosis due to multiple hospital failures. When my ride-or-die crew stomped in and demanded I see a cardiologist and that the hospital administrator be summoned to my room, tout suite, I had a stress echo, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and met Dr. Murphy when the first cardiologist was not available perform my procedure the next morning. I had three dangerous plaques in my coronary arteries requiring three stents. Dr. Murphy was great, the procedure was easy, and a week later I felt better than I had in 10 years. A year later, I feel like a million bucks. The reason I've knocked odd a star is not the medical care and it's not the staff. It's the infrastructure. When I booked this appointment at the end of 2024, i remarked "First appointment of 2025!" As I added it to my calendar. I did not know that on the day of the appointment I would be living full hour instead of 20 minutes away, or that I would have a (and this is not at all hyperbolic) have a 7:45 am career-critical meeting. I called two days before and asked if I could possibly come even in 15 minutes later so I wouldn't have to leave the meeting early. I was answered with an emphatic "No." The days of prioritizing work over health, were left behind me the day those stents were placed. I reluctantly agreed to keep the appointment. I drove at an illegal velocity and made it to the clinic at 8:44 am--one minute early. Turns out the appointment was at 9:00 but they tell all patients to arrive 15 minutes prior. I had my blood pressure taken and then sat and stewed for 45 minutes while I waited for my ultrasound to begin. I finally left the exam room and asked why I had been kept waiting so long and the answer I got was "The technician is late. She is coming from the East Bay." Yeah, so was I. When the technician finally arrived after an hour, she was very nice, apologetic, and performed the procedure quickly. And talking to her I come to find out, that she had asked if she could start at 9:30 AM because she needed to take her child somewhere in the morning. Then, I had to wait even longer to see Dr. Murphy because he had also arrived late. I understand that these things happen, but the technician, whose name I wish I could remember, because she was great, had called and said she was running late. I could also have been called at that time and not left my meeting, and driven dangerously only to wait an hour. The other minus one star is because I occasionally request medication refills are a medical question through the MyChart app/portal and they are largely ignored. I've also been contacted more than once by the pharmacy saying they tried to call for a medication refill and did not get a response. I will be going back in September for an echocardiogram, but now that I live across the Bay, I'm not sure it's worth continuing as a patient of this practice.

My mother is 90 years old and they're so patient with her. Very professional and caring.read more

He is a Kaiser member but the ambulance is told to go to MPHS. I can't tell you how upsetting, frustrated and sad I am that my father is refusing care and not letting me help. My last hope was Dr. Murakami from the ER that had seen my father twice come in for a 5150 (psych) called by Police each time. Dr. Murakami brought us in the waiting hall and told us he had been working with Kaiser all day and even had the private line. He advised us Kaiser was willing to PAY for his stay at Mill Pen. His plan was to get him admitted and have him evaluate. He said most likely Dementia however the family needs 2 doctors to evaluate and confirm before we can pit him in a Memory Care facility. Dr told us to wait in the waiting room while he worked on making this happen. Hours went by and we kept asking to speak with him or the nurse or even last resort Erica the Social Worker. Nothing happened. we had been waiting from 3:45pm until 9pm when we were finally told my dad was going to be discharged and Dr. Murakami left for the night. He never came back to talk to us. Finally before leaving we spoke with his nurse who was just horrible. Erica the social worker just happened to call bapick AFTER we had already left claiming she was on a break. Next morning went back with my brother asked to speak with Dr. Murakam, but instead some guy came out with my Dad who is very upset with me from the Dementia and said he is discharged. Dr. never came out to speak with us OR provide any discharge documention. Unfortunately we have to get Adult Protective Services involved as a last hope since nobody cares about an 83 yr old man who is wondering around, driving and scaring the neighbors with his aggression AND has a 3 day notice cause he forgot to pay his rent for the first time in 10 years. Its obviously not an urgent matter until he kills or hurts himself or someone else, then maybe Kaiser and MPHS will say I should have done more.

However, Dr. Murakami immediately put us at ease even during a difficult time, and checked in several times to see how things were going. Unfortunately, we've had a couple of visits to the Sutter Health/PAMF Burlingame ER in the last few years (accident prone, anyone...?), and have, on the whole, found the staff there to be competent and empathetic.
