But, because the adjacent Dealey Plaza was rightfully designated a historic landmark, this unassuming sloped green space has historical weight and has remained untouched. It really is nice that there's no Bubba Gump next door, or people selling bubble wands from carts. There are two X's in the road if you want to get a good shot.

Along with "Three Mile Island" and "The Bermuda Triangle" and "Area 51" and "Ground Zero," you can include "The Grassy Knoll" in the list and while some millennials might not know what it means, they've heard the words from their elders. For us, it instantly conjures up an era like a cultural code word. This is the spot where the world lurched on November 22, 1963. Where Abraham Zapruder famously stood with his 8mm color camera to film President John F. Kennedy driving past in an open top limousine. You can stand here in the same exact spot where he did, you can picture that car going past, see the trees and hear the shots ring out in Dealey Plaza. The pink dress, the jumping Secret Service agents and the car accelerating under the railroad bridge heading to Parkland Memorial Hospital. It reads, "Most colonists first settled in this "Three Forks" area of the Trinity River as members of the Peters Colony after 1841. Immigrants from such states as Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee brought with them a tradition of building log shelters. "Land title was granted to settlers who worked at least 15 acres and built "a good and comfortable cabin upon it." This region was abundant in oak, juniper (popularly called cedar), walnut, ash, bois d'arc, and elm trees, which furnished sturdy building timbers. "John Neely Bryan, a colonist from Tennessee, arrived near this site in late 1841 and built a log cabin in 1842. The area's first school and church was built of logs at Farmer's Branch (12 mi. NW) in 1845. J. W. Smith and J. M. Patterson brought goods from Shreveport (184 mi. E) in 1846 for resale at their log store in Dallas. "Milled lumber appeared in Dallas buildings by 1849, and bricks were available by 1860. That year a fire destroyed most of the town's original log cabins. "The nearby cabin was built of cedar logs before 1850, possibly by Kentuckian Gideon Pemberton. It was moved from its original site (7.5 mi. E) in 1926 and rebuilt at several locations, including Bryan's designated courthouse site (1 blk. SW) in 1936, and this block in 1971." It is marker 6775 and it was erected in 1986 by the Texas Historical Commission. Check out the marker and the log cabin when you're in downtown Dallas. This is a very cool covered park pavilion at White Rock Lake across the road from the sailing…read moreclubs. On my last trip here, it was to use it as a place to get a long drink of water and camp out on the bench to dry out socks and rest the recent surgically remade ankle at the 7 mile mark of my 10 mile jaunt around the lake. Even in the dark at 5:30 tucked under the canopy of large trees, there is enough lighting to see what I was doing. Well, at least see that there isn't a opossum or rat on the bench I was about to sit on. The water fountain is right near the pavilion. The porta potties are kept serviced. The parking lot is roomy had I needed a friend to find me had I decided to sprawl out and give up on my trek around the lake. The Dallas Parks and Recreation Department has a phone number to reserve the large and spacious pavilion. It has a fireplace, full kitchen and serving bar for that great big family gathering.

Shade is scarce, though the tall, lush trees and grass fields nearby provide some much-needed contrast. Speaking of these trees, walking further down the road you will notice a cluster of trees and an electronic sign stating the eagles have landed. Lo and behold, it is currently eagle nesting season! The sign cycles through various messages highlighting the necessity of minimizing noise and keeping distance from the eagles. Ideally, your viewing experience would be greatly amplified with a set of binoculars, but even without zooming in you can see the large nests perched up above on large branches. Good place to stop by before the lake.

Beware, do NOT go into the street, oncoming traffic at all times. There's 2 X's marked on the street. Easy photo opportunities of those markings, from the side of the street where the grassy knoll is. The history is tragic, but you learn something new. My advice? Take a tour guide with you. We used Discover Dallas Tours, please see my upcoming review on them, soon. Beautiful park, very well up kept, organized and clean with well-manicured lawns. Something for everyone. Go! I highly recommend stopping by if you're in Highland Park and want a sweet, low‑key outing. These oversized bronze bears are tucked along a peaceful walking path by the water/waterfall and the whole area feels like a storybook scene. The neighborhood is beautiful, the park is spotless, and the bears are adorable. It's one of the simpler, happy places that instantly lifts your mood. Best time to visit is early in the morning when crowds are almost non-existent. Pack a picnic basket, blanket and a book.

A unique corner of Las Colinas with a fun surprise, this landscaped clock with Las Colinas written…read morebeneath it is a sight to behold throughout the year and serves as a great landmark in the Las Colinas area. It's located just a few streets away from the popular Mustangs of Las Colinas Sculpture, Water Street District, and Toyota Music Factory. Unfortunately, the clock isn't really part of a park and sits at an intersection so you would need to park at a nearby business and walk over or try to snag a couple photo from your car (which can prove a bit disastrous if you happen to be the driver). This could serve as an excellent stop for scavenger hunts and is a marvel to checkout throughout the seasons (plantings change periodically). A shocking feature of this magical clock is that it isn't just for looks and does display the current time!
