I must admit I was never that fussed when I found out Cardiff would be getting a John Lewis store. I was familiar with the store and wasn't sure if we really needed it, especially as there were rumours about Harvey Nicks coming to Cardiff (now wouldn't that have been something). However I have been most pleasantly surprised, and seem to be in there quite frequently. For starters the beauty section is quite good they stock most luxury brands it's nice to finally be able to purchase stuff from Laura Mercier and Kiehls in Cardiff, though I do wish they'd stock Eve Lom like they do in some of their other stores (so if anyone from John Lewis is reading this, I know I'm not the only one). As for their clothing, in one word impressive. This is so much better than the selection in their Bristol store, which is nothing to write home about. They stock great luxury brands like Nicole Farhi, Reiss, Whistles, Fred Wright Mason, Hudson jeans and even Mulberry bags (yay). However they could do with a few more till points, which are a bit of a nightmare to find. When it comes to furniture most items on the website are also on display, this is not the case of other John Lewis stores (I once had to go up to London to look at a bed). Considering the store has not been open long the staff are all very knowledgeable on their products (I couldn't get over how much the lady serving me knew about bedding). All this is really just the tip of the iceberg, the second largest John Lewis has so much more to offer; stationery, curtains, appliances etc... which I'm sure I'll discover in months to come.

I too am a fan of this John Lewis. Its so massive its quite easy to get lost over the 4 floors. I can really ever go here for gifts and also because it has a really good knitting/sewing section with everything you need to make and fix stuff. Anyway I don't want to talk about the shop, I want to talk about pancakes! The Place to Eat cafe in John Lewis is really good. There aren't many department store cafe's where they will serve you up duck confit for lunch. But my favourite bit is the creperie counter and the very yummy chilli pancakes. Its not massively expensive and a good change from all the fast food places in the St David's centre, and a nice place to take rest while you shopping. Find it on the top floor.

Excellent place for parking in the centre. Lots of space and reasonably priced parking by the hour. Good shop for anything really - clothes, furniture, kitchen, baby wear etc...

Opening hours are the main benefit here and the parking beneath is good. I would say this place is more suited for women than men. The men's sections seem way too manufactured and nothing really stands out. Quite expensive to look like everyone else. Many other places in Cardiff where you could have more choice for less money.

I've had another one of those deja vu moments when it comes to Yelping, I'm sure I had reviewed this place before, but obviously not, so here we go (again?) This branch of John Lewis is a huge, impressive store located in the St David's mall in Cardiff, just near the Bridge, which basically connects the mall to this huge John Lewis store, which has such a big, marvelous building, it can be seen throughout Cardiff even when you're pulling into the station on the train, Cardiff Central that is. The store is huge, over 4 floors, two of which seem to have access into the St David's mall, which is a large shopping mall over two floors in Cardiff, this store is so big, it even has an opticians, which is pretty cool, having never seen this in a John Lewis department store before, especially in my local store in the Manchester Trafford Centre. There are store guides throughout the store, with mens-wear and mens fashion being on the Ground Floor, and the Opticans, cafe and women's fashion as well as watches being on the 1st floor, as you move up you can find Children's fashion and clothing and Nursery, Sports and Uniform stuff on the third floor, and on the second it is more of a "home" section with decorating, pictures, mirrors, and furniture being stocked here. Of course, as with most places in Cardiff, where-ever there is something in welsh, there is something in English and vice-versa. I came in to take a quick browse at the mens-wear, which makes me think I have definitely reviewed this place before, with big brands such as Hugo Boss stocked here, with high price tags, such as coats which could go up to £400 - £500, I suppose one can only dream, yet still brag about my Hugo Boss glasses that I picked up at discounted rate from Vision Express. The store was in a way like a maze, it was hard to navigate around even with the store guide, and even on my first visit, I had to walk out as I couldn't find a lift, nor a member of staff and felt like it was pure look to find it, tucked away into a corner of the store the second time. I would love to give this store 3, perhaps even 4 stars but due to the issues with the lift, and not a staff member in-sight, making me feel like they have gone into hiding, like Liverpool fans after that famous Steven Gerrard slip. which caused Demba Ba to score for Chelsea, and resulted in Liverpool losing the Premiership title to my beloved Manchester City, so because of issues with the staff, lifts and layout I sadly feel this store only deserves a high two star rating, perhaps around a 2.6 or a 2.7, but I don't think it is there yet to deserve a three, for The White Stripes, a 7 nation army can't hold them back, so perhaps they have some advice for John Lewis, that they need an "army" if you will of 7 staff, on the shop floor, mingling and helping customers and making John Lewis seem like a nice, high-end store to shop and not somewhere where the customers are forgotten, I could make football metaphors all-day but I won't, and just feel this store deserves two stars.

    Qype User (howard…)

Enjoying a gluten-free cake and hot choc special in the Expresso Cafe. Yes, relaxing leather chairs and enjoyable view overlooking the Hayes in wonderful Cardiff makes this an essential part of the day. The store shuts almost every day at a really handy 8pm (10pm in the festive farce period). Staff are friendly, professional and polite although one assistant i encountered resembled a repressed android butler. I felt like creeping up on him and shouting ASDA in his earhole. I'm not keen on the way you are sent to the rear of the building to collect some relatively small items (ie an iPad) it makes it feel like an upmarket Argos. All in all, though,it's an impressive store in a great city Shout QYPE if you visit and I'll buy you a coffee (that'll never happen thank goodness)! After writing 3 letters and 6 emails to John Lewis I am glad to announce they have installed WIFI in all stores including the cafes. The pen is indeed mightier than the sword.

From funky ice cube trays to fridge photo frames, it's a great place to pick up small presents. There are some beautiful greetings cards, items of jewellery, well-made children's toys, a few men's accessories, travel bags, purses, umbrellas and much more. The whole place is more intimate than large department stores such as House of Fraser or John Lewis, and the feeling is one of quality over quantity. For me, the gift and homeware areas are probably the most appealing, but glancing into their other 'departments' they have a Homes & Gardens area, a kitchen department, a range of furniture, plus some fabrics, lamps, mirrors, and more. They also offer an interior design service, though I dread to think how much that costs.

If I had my way, my house would look like something out of 50s magazine. This store is surprisingly big, considering it's in an arcade, and there is so much in there. The kitchen section is my favourite, because it sells the most adorable retro baking things and teapots and really funky utensils and gadgets that I've never seen anywhere else. Their gift section is also fantastic with brands like L'Occitane and Burt's Bees for toiletries, some really pretty scarves and jewellery, and then beautiful gift bags and paper to wrap them in. It's a shame this department store is hidden away and now has to compete with John Lewis, because it sells such beautiful things and it could be so easily missed if you didn't know about it. It's expensive, but everything is so nice that if I want something, I have to have it however much it costs.

As mentioned above, this location is on St Mary's Street in Cardiff, fairly close to Cardiff Central Railway Station, and of course right in the Cardiff City centre, which was also close to my Hilton hotel and Cardiff Castle, from my recent weekender in Cardiff. The store did seem quite nice, and was a typical high-end department store, although it seemed to lack the class I have seen in other branches of House Of Fraser, such as in the branch in Manchester, which has a lot of history to it, meanwhile this branch seems newer and the only history I'm aware that this branch has, is Cardiff Castle not far from here. This did pretty much seem to be your average department store with high-end labels and high-end prices, as a fan of the Hugo Boss brand it was a shame not to see them having a selection here in Menswear. Here is a full list of there in-store brands here, in Menswear, which is the only part of this review copied from the House of Fraser website, which I feel is useful to add a more in-depth analysis and conclusion to this review Alexandre Armani Jeans Barbour Berwin & Berwin Bjorn Borg Bugatti Calvin Klein Corsivo Criminal Diesel Dune Emporio Armani Failsworth Farah Fred Perry Fulton Gant Hilfiger Denim Howick Howick Tailored Hugo Boss Jack & Jones Kenneth Cole Label Lab LACOSTE CN Levi's Linea Lyle and Scott New & Lingwood Original Penguin Paul Smith Jeans Paul Smith London Peter Werth Polo Ralph Lauren Polo Ralph Lauren Golf PRETTY GREEN CN Pringle PS By Paul Smith SIMON CARTER Sloggi Ted Baker Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Sport Turner & Sanderson Overall, this department store is okay, although it just feels like something is missing, a bit of class, that added sparkle, and it isn't the nicest places to shop, and I would much prefer John Lewis, a similar nearby department store which even has an Opticians, and friendlier staff, so sadly I feel HOF deserves two stars and as Ofsted would say "Requires Improvement".

It is just utterly beautiful and displays a number of different styles that chart the rise of its once formidable position as an independent Welsh store, founded by a homegrown entrepreneur. Occupying a prominent position on St Mary Street, it does a lot to maintain appearances amid the decaying grandeur and decadence of this once fashionable and up-market strip. The original structure was built in the late 19th Century, and lends the place its unmistakable ornate façade that sits proudly, in gorgeous symmetry on St Marys Street. In the 1920s a large and well-proportioned neoclassical extension was built reaching to the end of the portion of St Mary's Street that meets Heol-y-Cawl. A unique result of this extension was that Bethany Chapel was absorbed into the design of the building, with its fascia being incorporated into the interior of the new building. Further extensions were added throughout the 1930s, 1950s and 1960s, bridging the gap between the more ornate Victorian style of architecture, and the ground-breaking, Modernist movement, with is minimalist style, of the '60's. Howells Department Store was originally a family run business, but was sold out in the 1950s to Welsh banker Sir Julian Hodge, who subsequently sold the store to Mohammed Al-Fayed, the then owner of House of Fraser, ultimately causing the loss of its Welsh independent business status. It was then sold onto the Icelandic investment company, Baugur, at the end of 2006, around the time when Iceland decided it was time to buy up the rest of the world, and, as we know now, to somewhat disastrous effect!

This mall is huge, it is split into two parts including a bridge to a large John Lewis store, which is over 4 floors in this mall, with two having direct enterences into both floors of the mall, although just being attached by a bridge in some aspects, it is its' own place, so it is able to have more floors than the mall itself and is one of the anchor stores for the mall. The mall did open in 1991, but does feel more modern than that, apart from a few aspects, such as the lifts which are well hidden down a passageway which doesn't seem very nice, and does feel one of the older parts of the mall, which is very different, in a negative way compared to what other malls do, such as Manchester Arndale and The Trafford Centre which both have nice, glass lifts in the middle of the wall, making it seem welcoming and not the opposite. There are 203 stores here, with a whopping 5 anchor tenants, which include a large Primark store, which is also over 4 floors as I recall, John Lewis as previously mentioned, a large Debenhams store, at the other side to John Lewis as well as Marks and Spencer, and Boots. An interesting fact is that the John Lewis located here, is the largest branch the company have outside of London and was the first ever branch to open in Wales, back in 2009. Its' also worth noting, that both floors are quite big, with the upper floor being a little smaller, however the upper floor seems to be filled with larger stores such as H&M, Apple and Paperchase, to name just a few. These stores just seen huge stores, you wouldn't normally expect to find in a mall. This mall is really nice, and is huge and is really nice to go with the Cardiff high street, I can't help but notice a supermarket of some kind would fit into to this store such as a Waitrose store, which is owned by John Lewis to join the anchors of this mall however I sadly feel I can't go over 2 stars, with two big issues stopping me, such as the mall being split into two parts making it confusing, and hard to navigate around even after multiple visits, another big issue is the problem with the lifts, not seeming nice and seeming one of the old things about this mall, there is a small food-court on both floors called "East-side" with many cuisine types, but this doesn't really stand out and is just average its-self.

Yes they're not the cheapest for everything but overall their prices work out very reasonably. Some of the electricals in particular are priced even cheaper than you'd find them online, which is a pleasant surprise. The cafe is useful as well. Moving on to my review now, away from all personal statistics, this TK Maxx store is located in The Hayes in Cardiff, one of the welsh capital's main shopping streets, really close to the St David's shopping complex. This branch is set over 4 floors, but in some ways the layout is quite confusing, with the ground floor and a slightly raised level on the other side, accessed by a total different lift which is both quite unusual and confusing. It is worth noting that the Men's section is on the top or second floor, with home in the basement. As mentioned in other reviews, it is in a way like a "treasure hunt", with mainly one of every product in each size or at least very few, at least in the clothing, so if you see something you can only pray it is your size, which is really annoying. I class myself as a lazy shopper, I like things being done for me so I strongly dislike the format of TK Maxx, and the staff didn't seem too helpful either, and other than on the ground floor, they basically were so few in number. The store in general was quiet, it felt like a jumble sale due to the layout and didn't have a good vibe. It was also frustrating one of two lifts was out of order, which would cause a slight delay if you needed to use it. Another unusual practice used was that the store opened earlier than it should, I entered on a Sunday and I wanted to checkout and buy something, limited on time as I had a train to catch in a few hours, I was shocked when he said he couldn't serve me, probably due to the Sunday Trading hours (Big shout-out to the SNP who voted against Sunday trading hours being lifted in England despite being able to open when they want in Scotland) - This probably isn't the store's fault but there was no sign for this, and for someone who wants to get in and out of the shop, this was just a stupid policy to have, and with no prior warning was misleading. Sadly due to unusual practices of both this store and the brand in general, I sadly feel this store deserves a single one star.

After browsing for 10 minutes, we managed to purchase a very warm wind-proof coat at a great price! ~ Atmosphere: TK Maxx is HUGE but despite its size, it's also very crowded. Granted, we did come during a weekend close to Christmas-time. Still, I can imagine TK Maxx being constantly crowded as I'm sure it's a very popular place to shop given both its location in the heart of Cardiff's city centre as well as the prices. ~ Variety: There's plenty of variety here in TK Maxx. Their section for mens coats was MASSIVE in itself and could amount to a small retail shop on its own! Combined with the fact that it has multiple stories, you'd probably be hard pressed to find something you *don't* like here. ~ Customer Service: Not bad at all. Despite how busy it was, it still didn't take too long to queue up and pay. The employees were decently friendly and efficient as well. --- TK Maxx definitely does the job if you're looking for fashion on a budget, without skimping on quality either. One flaw about this store is its' size it is like a jungle and it can be hard to just wonder in and take a look, as I like in a shop. I was frustrated that the only lifts were at the back of the store, so I had to get all the way there to only work my way back when reaching the upper floor. The mens section was very good with a nice selection of clothes, mainly jeans and shirts, they even had nice multipacks of shirts, some were a pack of 3 for just £39 I'm not normally a fan of Next but they do have a great selection here including one of my favourite branches of Starbucks in Cardiff, however I sadly feel I can't go any higher than a high three star rating, as the refurb is really needed as soon as possible, and more lifts need to be added to make the shopping experience so much easier.

I have to agree with Laura, this place has really benefit from the recent refit. It now has a…read morereally big range of their fashion, work wear, occasion wear and shoes as well as a good sized home-wear department. I think it must be my age but Next is becoming more appealing all the time. The prices don't seem as bad as they once did and I just love that I can come here and get some work clothes and look for something to wear to my cousins wedding all in one go. Of course its also great that if you can't find the right size then they'll order it in for you. I had a bridesmaids dress from Next last year that was lovely and it was great that the bride could get us to try them on and then have them sent to us at home. Really nice men's stuff too. Would just also have to agree that there never seem to be enough staff on the floor.
