Awful experience if you are a minority. The teachers are awful the principal don't help matters. The language of these kids are terrible.

My son was bullied by another student who also encouraged others to join in. He was pushed, dragged, hit, and even had his shoe taken off and thrown. When we reported this, the response from Vice Principal Jenny Amaya was extremely disappointing. She dismissed the situation by saying my son was "being annoying," which is not an acceptable justification for physical bullying. What made the situation worse is that the vice principal had my child change his statement without my authorization. She essentially coached him on what to say, and the revised statement appeared to minimize what happened and protect the school. This is where everything escalated and became even more concerning. There also appeared to be a conflict of interest, as the student who initiated the bullying was reportedly related to the vice principal. This raises concerns about fairness and whether the situation was handled objectively. At the time, the school also had a new principal who seemed unaware of what was going on, and no meaningful action was taken. I reported the issue to the district, but nothing was done. The lack of accountability and follow-through is very concerning. Overall, this experience left us feeling that the school does not provide a safe or supportive environment for all students. I hope improvements are made so that no other family has to go through a similar situation. Some teachers are great!

Yes, Whitney…read moreboasts the title of "6th best school in the nation" but this is just a title that was achieved from its brilliant students, not the school itself. I have been constantly frustrated at Whitney's limitations- how they do not provide you opportunities and how they do not let you bring about change. They only offer the basic required curriculum. I don't get a chance to even choose the classes I want. My friends have been forced to drop their art class, language class, sports-simply because they "do not have space" or there is no other class available. They also do not offer other classes- they've dropped so many classes. Some teachers are okay, some others are... not the best. A few do not even bother to teach well. There is a lot of rigor which is good for the students, but most of the time, the rigor is unnecessary. The school has fundraisers and receives donations. Where has all this money gone? To classes for the students? To improving the campus? No, they've all gone to the public multimedia center. It's great-sleek, shiny computers and a stage with fancy lights. However, our bathrooms still have broken locks and not enough soap or paper towels. And, of course, not a variety of classes to choose from. I really do love the people here. Everyone is friendly and inviting- teachers and students. We are a tight-knit community who get to know each other and build memories together. The school, though, is disappointing.

On the…read moreevening known as 'Social Event' night the skillsUSA organizers invited all 4000 plus contestants to enjoy food trucks of Chick-Fil-A, In and Out, and a Softy Ice Cream. I was waiting in line. Behind me was a teacher (I'll refer to her as Betsy but that's not her real name) and she teaches in the Bay Area. In front of me were two students from Los Alisos Middle School. There must have been over 100 people in front of us waiting for the ice cream. Deep within me, I had told myself that none of these food trucks were worth the wait. My students were waiting at the In-and-Out Line and I didn't really want any food. Rather, ice cream sounded good. Well the two little middle boys decided to allow a friend to cut in front of us. I didn't like that, but I let it go. Then the one friend grew into two, then three, then 4. Before I knew it over 7 students made their way in front of us, irking both me and Betsy. We told the students that it was not fair and not right to allow so many students to cut in front of us. They started giving us attitude, telling us to 'grow up' and 'act like an adult'. They acted like they did nothing wrong. Betsy went to get their teacher and the teacher replied, 'well it's their competition and they should do what they want'. I was aghast. I expected the middle school brats to say immature nonsensical things, but the teacher? I could not believe what I heard! Betsy and I were shocked beyond belief that a teacher, who was supposed to be a role model, would lower herself to such immaturity. Betsy and I just sucked it up and just waited. If it were my students, I would have pulled them out and forced them to the back of the line. Now I can see why society is going this way and kids have so much disrespect. I also see why their students didn't win anything in any competition. My students took gold. Shame on the teacher! Shame on the school! Glad my kids didn't go there! With schools and teachers like this, our society is in deep trouble!

I'm going to be very biased here because this was my junior high/middle school back in 1996-1998…read moreand I live across the street from here. It's hard to list all the events and personal development that went on here, but I can pretty much say that I met some of my best friends to this day here. The teaching staff was great looking back. I know certain teachers are probably still there as I see some of them as I pass by everyday on 166th Street (referring to Mr. Watson for algebra). I was in school at a point in its transition from Carmenita Junior High School to Carmenita Middle School. Computers were starting to take hold, and using sources like MS Encarta was considered highly advanced. It wasn't until I started going to seventh grade here did I make the full shift from typewriter to MS Word for those essays and seeing the convenience and accuracy of having a PC. I remember passing by this school when I was really young (like age 5-10) never thinking that I would ever go here, partly because I did not understand the whole enrollment process after elementary school. At that time, the cougar on the school's auditorium was fading after not having been repainted for nearly 30 years. (It's since been repainted). This school is also a distinguished school, apparently after I and my graduating class set a high standard and paved the way for an easy victory for the people who came after. This school is old. And by old, I mean literally 100 years old. The lockers are old and rusty. There is one quirky part of this school in that the "main" entrance faced Carmenita but was blocked off an off limits for students at the time (the "C Building" we called it). Most people entered in through 166th Street. The computer room was the only part of the C Building that was accessible by students, otherwise the doors to the hallways were locked. One was able to peer in and see 1930s style desks and design elements inside and gathering dust. In fact, the signage to this day is the same art deco 1930s style facing Carmenita Road. Lots of history here in retrospect.
