This stems back to a dispute from last tax year--they did not review my return carefully, resulting in a careless error in reporting out of state income I documented and a five-month delay in getting my state refund. They were casual and non-communicative about a letter from the state with a deadline for response, to which I had to rush a reply to get a postmark to be in legal compliance. They were indifferent that a significant refund was at stake. In a previous year, a server went down and they lost all returns. Careless. Another year we had to submit additional documentation to the state as they said that their software had a glitch which affected many clients' returns. Bureaucratic and unreliable. Tony used to provide a personal touch. But it's a large bureaucratic operation, he doesn't even give a simply reply like "I'm working on this matter" when he is CC'd on an urgent matter. The receptionist tell you "it was on Tony's calendar for last week," not "Tony has taken care of this." It used to be in person annual appointments, then went to Zoom, and then became by telephone. The amount of time was reduced very year, even as fees outpaced inflation. It's overpriced, and the service and reliability are not at all what they used to be. Tony used to be a nice guy and very professional, but he's only a shadow of what he used to be.

I first went to consult David back in March 2022 and he was great. He answered all my tax questions and I was in and out of the office in no time. I thought to myself, great, I just found an amazing accountant in my neighborhood. During that time, I explained to David about my situation and he responded to come back to me when tax season is over and all he has to do is to file a 1040x (to amend my tax return - 1040). (Side note: The issue that I had was that I initially e-filed my taxes. The federal rejected it but the state accepted it. Which is why I went to seek professional services in resolving the problem). So on December 12, 2022 at 1:30pm I went to see David and his office was busy. I told David I did not have an appointment and I asked, "should I make an appointment"? He decided to hear me out at first but then he passed my case to one of his employees. The employee explained to me that since I did not file my taxes 2020 taxes with them, there is nothing that they can do and I would have to come back during tax season. I tried to explain to them what David told me back in April (to come back after tax season) and David told his employee in Chinese "just ignore him, he is too annoying". Yup, just because someone doesn't speak the language, doesn't mean the person does not understand. The funny thing is that, just over the weekend, the same family friend asked me how was my experience with David because she wanted to file her taxes with him for the upcoming year. I raved about how great he was the first time around but after this experience, it got me to think: if a family friend doesn't even use your service in the first place, it is extremely telling of your professional demeanor or the lack thereof. Over the past three years, Medows put more preparation burden on his customers (requiring completion of lengthy, convoluted forms which I've never had to prepare for a tax PREPARER before), while complaining that our taxes took a long time to complete. We had to check their work for errors. We learned to expect inaccurate answers and incomplete research when we did have questions - and often completed the research ourselves. He was very helpful when we had a shift in our income/expenditure situation three years ago. Hence two stars. But then our taxes got very simple for two years in a row. A few months ago, I asked for an itemized bill for last year's expenses and/or a fair estimate for this year's work. I was told we were too much work, and it wasn't worth his time to retain us as customers - no answer, no transparency. This is probably par for the course in tax preparation, and there's nothing particularly bad about this service. But there's nothing particularly good either. We'll spend as much time preparing our own taxes this year as we did preparing and checking Medows' work last year, and we'll save $335. For even mildly intrepid souls, I recommend using a tax accountant only when you have a big change in financial circumstances, and in between just use TaxAct.com and a couple of calls to the IRS. It would take about 3 weeks or so from handing it off to receiving it back to sign before mailing them to the IRS. Yes, it was snail mail back in the days. Fast forward 10 years or so, moving out and buying my own place, I thought it was be best to find my own accountant rather than having to have my parents do it on my behalf. I was introduced to an accountant through a family member, and he was nice but also very inconvenient. I had to get a ride to get to him and all. It wasn't cheap (at that time) And then there was turbo tax. I was like, wow, this is great, I can file my own taxes and it's cheaper. So I started using turbo tax regularly and it was great. Until one year, I was audited. I was embarrassed and had no one to talk to or ask about it. It wasn't a hefty amount but the fact that I was audited, that was not cool. I paid it and continue to use turbo tax, and each year the questions became more and also more complex. Sorry, I don't know finance terms or anything like that. So I answered it to the best of my knowledge. And then one year, I owed money. I was floored, like how? Embarrassed once again but paid it. So then I decided, I need to find a real actual accountant to talk to. I do not want to owe money and I certainly do no know what was wrong with my taxes. I came across Fast Tax Accounting, located in the heart of Flushing and decided to give him a call. I told him how I owed money to the IRS and I did not know why.
