I had the good fortune of meeting Dr. John Carew in February 2001 when I was diagnosed with throat cancer.  Dr. Carew was the physician who referred me to the top Oncologist and Radiologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital.  In December of that year it was discovered that I needed to have surgery, so Dr. Carew performed an extremely long and very delicate operation on my voicebox and my vocal cords.  Because he is an amazing otolaryngologist and an extremely skilled surgeon, Dr. Carew saved my life and my voice.   Because of him, I was able to return to my job, speak to my family and friends, I welcomed the birth of my grandchildren and he enabled me to continue to live a productive and happy life. My husband, my daughter and my grandson were also patients of Dr. Carew and I have recommended him to many of my family members and friends. Dr. Carew is an extremely knowledgeable, gifted and professional physician.  Over the course of many years I have also come to know him as a very kind, caring and compassionate person. He is dedicated to his patients and takes great measures in providing them the best of care.  If you are fortunate to have him as your doctor you are truly blessed and are in good hands. It is now 23 years later and each December I venture into Manhattan to see him to ensure my continued good health, but to also wish a Happy Holiday to this wonderful man who has become a very dear and cherished friend. I've been a patient of Dr. Carew for over 10 years and can confidently say that he's the best ENT I've had. He has wonderful bedside manners, is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced, and truly cares about his patients. Recently, I had an urgent issue after hours and left a message with his exchange. Had an excellent experience seeing Dr. Carew recently for a chronic issue. His receptionist was courteous, and I was seen very quickly. He thoroughly investigated the issue and was sure to outline all of the risks of the proposed treatment and answer all of the questions I had. Dr. Carew doesn't take insurance. Took my elderly father for ear wax removal. Spent minimal time with him and didn't finish the job - said to buy an over the counter ear wax removal kit. This after spending several hundred dollars on the visit. Waste of time & money. read more

Dr Carew is a gem - he goes out of his way to help his patients. I have been experiencing hearing loss and he recommended an MRI, since he's so smart, reassuring and positive I agreed to do it but right afterwards I ran to his office so scared of the results. He obviously didn't have the results right away and in a comforting way I left the office. As i headed to work almost an hour later, with my 23 year old son in tow and dog, i get a call from his cell telling me the test was normal! I was crying from happiness for almost 20 minutes, and my son hugged me and cried as well. All of a sudden my son didn't mind losing in fantasy football and learned a very big life lesson - which is your health! Dr Carew is magnificent that's all I can say - so is his staff for letting me barge in wanting to see the dr. Whoever has him as a doctor is a very lucky patient! read more

Dr Carew was extremely personable, clear in his explanations, patient with my questions, and empathetic. What I also found remarkable is how he pro-actively offered me names of other surgeons for my surgery after he noted that he was not in network for my particular insurance plan. read more

It is difficult to evaluate Dr. Carew professionalism on the basis of a 2 minutes visit. The rating reflects the administrative side of his practice. Dr. Carew opted out of Medicare, it is understood. I was informed of that and signed a paper to that effect. But, when a patient has a secondary insurance and Dr. Carew is a practitioner in the network of that insurance (AETNA in this case), that particular insurance then becomes the primary insurance. Thus the patient should charged only the co-payment due and not $175 fee for the visit. Attempts were made to explain the situation to the disrespectful receptionist to no avail. Her rude manners and shouting strategies put her in a position where she was unable to listen or to understand or both. But in one occasion Dr. Carew himself answered the phone and the situation was explained to him, and that the the issue could be resolved by reimbursing me what was due since he was in the network of AETNA and I should have been charged only the co-payment. This opinion is shared by different AETNA staff. Surprisingly, Dr. Carew has not taken any initiative in 5 months to solve the situation. read more

My visit with Dr. Carew today was, simply put, perfect. I did not have to wait to be seen. He remembered me from having done my thyroid surgery years ago. He listened as I explained my current symptoms, then told me what he suspected and did a simple test which required looking through a tube down my throat. He did this gently and quickly, then explained I have "Silent Reflux". He told me in detail and by drawing a picture, exactly what was causing my symptoms, the medications that could help, and his recommendations regarding my diet. You will not find a kinder, more thorough, skilled, knowledgeable, caring and personable doctor anywhere. I trust him explicitly and feel so fortunate he was available to perform my surgery in the past and still care for me today. He said I will likely not have to return for a visit- if I follow his instructions I will get well... but I am so grateful he is here, practicing in NYC, if I need him. read more

I went to Dr. Carew office for the first time ever, because a big problem with my ears. He took his time to examined me and also to explain what was happening. I was so relief and so happy with the results and his exam. He is very nice, he cares, he do not try to put you through unnecessary test . Love this Doctor. I feel that even if I wasn't sick I will visit him again. I am recommending Dr. Carew to anyone who is looking for a good doctor like him. The staff are also very professional and yes outstanding and they do care for you a lot and they do not have you waiting too long. The girls smile is what make me like them even more. I went in to see Dr. Carew for a 15 minute appointment on 3/3/13. As very few people know exactly what is and is not covered under their health insurance, I was told when I left the office that nothing was owed at the time and they would reach out to me for any billing issues. Considering I never heard anything and have paid multiple bills in relation to other doctors I saw in this matter, I just assumed that payment was covered by my insurance. ONE YEAR later, I get a letter in the mail saying a balance of $424.97 has been sent to collections. When I reached out to Dr. Carew's office, I found out that they had an incorrect address that did not include the apartment number. I live in a high rise building with more than 400 units and 60 full-time employees ensuring I would receive my mail. I have never had any issues receiving mail, so I feel strongly that nothing was sent to me, much less multiple attempts to contact me. The office made no attempt to contact me via phone or email or any number of other methods available in today's age of communication. I think this is absolutely unacceptable billing policy and demand that this be lifted from my credit. I have no problem paying the balance. It is the matter in which it was handled. Further, my communication with the billing department at the office was quite rude and disrespectful when I spoke to her on the phone, which is especially offensive considering Dr. Carew is billing me at a rate of nearly $1,700 dollars per hour to stick a scope in my nose. read more

The reason for my five star rating is simple, this doctor deserves nothing less! I'm not a relative or a friend. Just a first time patient which after searching the internet made a decision to choose Dr. Carew. Based on what all other ENT doctors were charging me Dr. Carew's fee was decent and well deserved. You do the math and make the comparisons, I did. I can't mention any names but other's around him were well overreaching especially since my coverage didn't cover my visit. In addition my appointment was almost immediately and it was for an over packed waxed ear which he cleared up immediately without irrigation. Thank you! I had the best experience possible with Dr. Carew. I saw him Back in December 2015 about a lump on my salivary gland, a pretty common place for tumors. When they turn into cancer, there's no going back. I was a little freaked out about the prospect of a potentially disabling surgery, but I relented and just went ahead and did it back in March. Overall great experience. I went under and woke up with my facial nerve still intact. For follow-up visits, he got the job done with hardly any wait and about five minutes of work. The cut has healed up just fine, just a faint scar. I'm glad that I got rid of the tumor before it turned to cancer and went with someone who knows what he's doing. Also a shout out to the anesthesiologist and nurses that helped me through and listened to me yap about how glad I was that Lenox Hill isn't using Windows XP, unlike NYU Langone in Brooklyn and cybersecurity blah blah blah until I passed out. read more

Dr. Carew is a sadist and a crook. I went in for a nodule on my thyroid. He asked me some questions then did a totally unnecessary and uncomfortable procedure, which was clearly not needed based on my answers to his questions. He just wanted to justify his exorbitant fee.
