The staff are first-rate and very welcoming and Decca and Susan really make an effort to make people feel welcome. The patrons are a lovely bunch - when I walked in for the first time I didn't have to try very hard to meet people and have some good laughs. You might not immediately like the look of the place when you stick your head in the door, but it's well worth going in and having a chat and a pint or two. The Sunday lunch is cheap and cheerful and rightfully very popular.

There is a bar area, and a room off to the side with leather chairs and sofas and a TV. At the other end of the pub there is an extensive dining area and the pub does seem heavily geared towards dining. We had just popped in for a beer and there was Black Sheep and Old Speckled Hen on both of which were very pleasant. The staff were welcoming and friendly and we spent a relaxing and very enjoyable hour there.

Legend has it that they've been there forever and that whenever someone has tried to clean them or move them they've died or had some other terrible fate befall them. Well, whatever the story, they're still there in the window. A perfectly decent pub, but not very remarkable. As it's built on a bit of a slope, you feel like you're almost underground when you're in it which is nice. Well worth stopping for a drink on your way somewhere else, but it's never quite appealed to me as a place to drink all night.

The beet was sliced very thin and drizzled with basil oil, and the pieces of cheese were generously portioned and creamy. Little walnuts and micro greens as well, very tasty. A good light starter. My mom also really enjoyed her potato leek soup and said she liked how much it tasted like leeks, and wasn't too thick and heavy and potato-y. I had the pork for my lunch - all the roasts come with two roast potatoes, mash, steamed veggies, and a Yorkshire pudding. The Yorkshire puddings were really fantastic - if such a simple thing can be "fantastic" but I think it can! The veggies were fine, all very simply prepared. I liked my pork, but wasn't over the moon about it. It was a bit tough, and the mustard and apple sauce was good, but not great. The beef, however, looked absolutely fantastic and cooked perfectly. A solid, unassuming local pub close to Alnwick Castle (Hogwarts)…read more This little pub is just about a 5 minute walk from Alnwick's most spectacular tourist attraction, the truly wonderful Alnwick Castle (see my review). Having visited "Hogwarts" you might want to drop in here for a quick pint (and since they close at 2.30 p.m. and only re-open in the late afternoon, it really was a quick pint for me). The decor is traditional and, thus, pleasant for boozers like me. There are a few real ales on offer, and of course all other kinds of alcoholic drinks. Food is inexpensive, and the Russian group at the next table seem to be enjoying theirs. For my part, since there was no time left to try the food, I went to the nearby The Plough Inn, which is more upmarket, also offers a couple of real ales and really good food.
