My two-year-old daughter is incredibly active, so I was a bit nervous about how she'd do during her treatment -- but this team was nothing short of amazing. Connie and Hillary were so kind, patient, and skillful. They kept my daughter calm and comfortable the entire time, even while she had to keep her mouth open for several minutes -- something I never thought was possible without sedation at her age. Dr Speed and staff are amazing and caring! My kids have been going to her office since they were little. My oldest is now 17. When my oldest was scared we did happy visits to help him overcome his fears. They even cleaned his teeth standing up when he was too scared to lay down in the chair. They use a new treatment now, curadont, that treats the tooth before it becomes a cavity to prevent the cost and discomfort of a filling. Haven't seen this type of work anywhere else! read more

Dental Staff was great. Office staff and billing, not so much. After showing our insurance cards and being told that they accept our insurance, it turns out that they don't actually accept any insurance & they are considered "Out of Network" for all insurance carriers. What they do accept is ALL PATIENTS, insurance or not. Well, we found that out AFTER they had done teeth cleaning for 3 kids at a cost of almost $800 out of pocket. We finally moved to another dental group who is amazing, but prior to moving, one of our kids had a cavity that needed to be fixed. We paid the "Estimate" in full prior to the procedure. Then a week ago (yes, Thanksgiving week, when we were out of town) we got a "Past Due" statement saying that we owed another roughly 50% and that if it wasnt paid immediately, we would be sent to collections. They claimed to have "called and emailed repeatedly", but we found zero records of either. We called and paid the invoice earlier this week and then today got a certified letter saying that we were being fired as clients until our past due balance was cleared up. Comical to say the least, since we had fired them already, and since we had already cleared up our balance that nobody ever told us about. If you want to get non-stop marketing texts asking for Yelp reviews and new customer referrals, along with overpriced services, this is the spot. read more

Dr. Speed and her assistants are absolutely fantastic. My daughter was very nervous coming in and was immediately calmed and happy by their patience and understanding. That being said, billing was a nightmare and the woman in charge of billing is generally unhappy and unpleasant. She was rude and passive aggressive even after being shown her misunderstanding. Everyone makes mistakes, but with her many years of expertise in dental billing, she knew better than even the written policy explained by the insurance. Not worth the headache, unfortunately. Whoever is in charge of insurance billing is awful. I have delta dental premiere. I was told that they are out of network and that they would bill delta and delta would send me the payment and I would then send the payment their way. They forgot to mention that they charge MORE than delta allows and they expect YOU to pay the difference. So for my son's cleaning, exam and fluoride treatment they charged delta $301 and delta only allows $118 for those services. So now, I'm expected to make up the difference of $183. Once I informed them that no one let me know anything about the price difference that I was responsible for, they didn't even apologize. Not letting your patients know this ahead of time is extremely shady and unethical. If you have delta dental insurance I suggest going elsewhere. There's more: I spoke with them yesterday and paid my balance in full. They gave me their spiel about how they charge so much so they can provide quality patient care. For reference, for my three children my balance was $1765. Delta Dental paid $740 and I was responsible for $1025. We ended the conversation with me being told I would receive a statement showing how I paid my balance in full and a copy of my son's X-rays so that he can have treatment elsewhere. Later in the day I hadn't received either yet, so I called the office. After calling three times, I finally left a voicemail asking them to please email me both the statement and X-rays. Within 10 minutes, I received the emailed statement. At this point I realized they are ignoring my calls so I had my mother call. They answered right away for her. Does this sound like quality patient care to you? Because to me it sounds like GREED, DISHONESTY and not taking accountability. Im not the first person to have this experience per other Yelp reviews and they have clearly done nothing to make sure it doesn't happen again. Part of quality patient care is keeping your patients informed of their financial responsibility before treatment and it is definitely not withholding X-rays once you have received your payment in full. Wonderful dental staff, but the worst office staff EVER. They made no mention to me on the numerous conversations I had that regardless of my insurance I would ultimately be paying almost ENTIRELY out of pocket. I pay the $400 bill at the office and then get hit with a bill for the remainder a couple of weeks later. They then claim to have no idea what happened, and that they Always tell clients they are out of network. BS Nearly a grand to do a check up on two kids is ridiculous. I had been taking my kids for a few years but things have changed for the worse. At our last appt I could not schedule my older child with my younger ones. We had to go twice. I was nicely told by Dr. Speed that we can no longer come because I do not consent to "routine" xrays. I subscribe to the American Dental Association and FDA guidelines to take xrays when a dentist needs them. I explained that I have no problem with xrays when there is a need but she said it was to "cover her butt from lawsuits." My kids have healthy teeth and no obvious need for xrays. Not exposing children to harmful xrays should be paramount and fear of lawsuit shouldn't replace the guidelines ( that are there for a reason). My opinion is that we don't bring in as much money as a child they can xray. "So why are pediatric dentists continuing to recommend x-rays as a matter of routine if it's not recommended by the ADA or FDA? One factor, Casamassino notes reluctantly, is that insurance is often quick to pay dentists for x-rays. But it's also a culture that many practitioners find hard to move away from. 'There are still some residual beliefs from when we were told in dental school that you needed to get a basic set of x-rays from a child -- but that was 40 years ago,' says. We have been going to Dr. Speed for 16 years since my daughter was 6 months old. We have loved this dentist and I recommend it to my friends and co-workers. In the last year, they have changed their scheduling policies and hired an awful person to make appointments. She makes me feel like we are doing her a favor by giving them our business and will never let us schedule an appointment after 1:00 - even 6-8 months in advance. I have teenagers now who can't miss school. Dr. Speed, please go back to your family friendly policies and hire people who share your values and treat patients like you do. I've been going to Dr. Speed since I was about 5 years old, and it has always been a great experience. I've never had any fear about going to the dentist, unlike many other people I know, and I think it's because of the very calming environment. The whole office is decorated in a jungle theme with beautiful murals and plants and it's always fun. All of the people are really nice and friendly, especially Dr. Speed and always make you feel comfortable. They give you sunglasses and even a blanket so that you're comfortable during the exam and some of the chairs have TV screens on the ceiling! I've enjoyed many kids movies while getting my teeth cleaned. Also Dr. Speed is one of the few dentists in the area who has a laser drill, which allows you to get a cavity filled without any anesthetic. I can say from experience that it is totally painless with no after-effects. Finally, Dr. Speed has actually inspired me to be a dentist myself and I will be starting pre-dental studies next year. Absolute best pediatric Dentist we have ever been to for our littles. My daughter had 6 cavities (yes I know that is crazy) and the other pediatric dentist we went to wanted to strap her down and give her Novocain and I just didn't feel comfortable with that. Dr. Speed and staff were so kind and amazing with our daughter and made her feel comfortable and at ease. She used the laser technology and told her that she was putting fairy dust on her teeth. She still tells everyone how she has special teeth with fairy dust all the time. We LOVE smile gallery and recommend it to all of our friends now. read more

I'm very frustrated. I love Dr. Speed and her dental assistants. They are wonderful. I have a child with Down syndrome and they have been great wit her. However, the billing is crazy now! I was just told that having my 3 kids teeth cleaned with x-rays would cost me $400 per kid up front. Who wants to pay $1,200 for teeth cleaning!?! Then they said my insurance would partially reimburse me. We were shocked because it's preventative care and normally covered 100%. They specifically said it was because our dental insurance, Delta, changed their policy. That was not true. We called Delta and found out that Smile is no longer affiliated with our Delta plan (which is one of the most popular plans around). So, instead of simply telling us that they don't take our insurance anymore, the billing lady told us it was Delta and pushed to have us pay. I hate the dishonesty. I am now searching for a new dentist. My kids have been with Dr. Speed for 10 years. I'm frustrated that it's ending with a lie from their biller. read more

I was researching pediatric dentists for my 2-y/o, who had lingual decay on E,F. I was told about a children's zirconia crown called ez-pedo. They look beautiful. I found three dentists. Two pediatric dentists charge $350/per Crown,but Dr. Speed charges $495/per crown...it really turned me off that a pediatric dentist would have such a huge difference in cost. I realize all dentist have different fees, but $150 extra per tooth???Needless to say, I chose a different dentist and the crowns are beautiful! He did a wonderful job and cost me $300 less, which is a lot of money for many families. This is just my opinion. read more

Dr. Speed is truly a caring pediatric dental expert. She has two years of specialty training in addition to the four years (after four years of college) general dental school. There are many misleading box kids tooth and smile clinics popping up in Sacramento. These are often owned by non dentist business corporations and run by general dentists (not pediatric specialists) providing treatment. If you've been to one of those and then go to Dr. Speed, you will easily see, feel and know the difference. She's the real deal! read more

Took my child to a dental appointment today and was informed of multiple sealant "repairs" that had to be done on previously sealed teeth. It hasn't even been six months since the initial placement. Previously, the front desk receptionist informed me that all sealant repairs that are done by dr speed had a lifetime coverage. And now I'm being told that's not the case? I got a very nice bill to go along with these repairs. Front desk told me today that's it's based on my insurance frequency. Why and when did the story change from a lifetime coverage to my insurance frequency? Obviously, this receptionist either does not know anything about insurance or does not want to put the effort in to find out the actual answer. Taking my children to a different dental clinic with a more knowledge front desk staff. They made me feel very uneasy about coming back again. read more

Dr. Speed and her staff were wonderful with my two very difficult toddlers! One is highly anxious and the other is high energy. They were so patient and creative in how they got them each to cooperate. Not to mention the office is incredibly kid friendly! Full of toys, tvs, treat bags, etc. The office and tools also look incredibly sterile. The staff offered great solutions in how to prepare for future appointments. I am not one to normally write reviews but I thought this was important to share with people as money is involved. Dr. Joelle and the dental staff were great with my kids but I did have a difficult time with the office staff. I had a wonderful visit until we went to make our appointment for the next time and then she mentioned to tell my I had a co-pay of $92. Which I was completely caught of guard because I have never had to pay anything ever for x-ray and cleaning. Thank goodness the well care visit for my 1 year old was free because I'm sure it would have been more. The office staff didn't help at all just said have your husband call human resources. After talking to my husband and us trying to figure out what happened we realized they didn't take Delta Dental PPO. Only Premiere. When I made a appointment and was asked what dental insurance we had I mentioned Delta Dental. Unaware that they didn't take Delta Dental PPO only Delta Dental Premiere. Because it was never brought to my attention. So I did write an email and received a call from the office manger who said she was responsible for scheduling our appointments and who was responsible to send us a email breaking down the Cost and what I was going to be expected to pay. She did apologize and took credit for never sending me the email which I appreciate but no where in the conversation did she offer to refund our office visit or provide any other compensation for her mistake. It was just simply a "Im sorry". It's very unfortunate that because of their mistake it cost me money. read more

Our first appointment was scheduled at 2:50, second was 3:10, third 3:00. Check ups were just last week, and scheduled at 1:30. Now that they (6 year old twins) had their check ups we are being told that we cannot schedule an appointment pass 1 pm. Their office closes at 5. They will not work with us, and now we have to pay out of pocket to go somewhere else to get my daughters' tooth extracted. It would have been nice to know of their policy change up front. Not for families who have young children and who have to work. Having to leave in the middle of the day and making our kids miss more school is not ideal for us. read more

I have a 1.5 year old daughter and wanted to establish her somewhere for her future dentist needs. I was fortunate enough to have been referred to Dr. Joelle Speed! When I booked the appt they sent me the paperwork to fill out before hand and bring in with me to my appt. extra brownie points there! That saves me from having to fill it out there and the comfort of my own home with my crazy toddler. Upon arrival the staff was very friendly and knew who she was without even meeting her! (Another brownie point) We waited about 10 mins for our appt (as we were early) and were greeted with a another friendly staff member to take us back. She went over some history as my daughter played in the toy area. she made me and my daughter feel very welcomed and comfortable. Went over any concerns or questions before hand and brought us back to dr once she was ready. Dr. Speed was also very nice and welcoming. This appt was mainly to establish relationship and get familiar with who her future dentist would be and also give the chance for the Dr. to give us advice for dental care. She had me sit on chair with my little one to make her feel comfortable. Looked in her mouth and tried to make the visit go as smoothly as possible for a 1.5 year old! She was very patient and went over any questions we had. I fell in love with her already! And they were gawking over my cutie pie daughter (who wouldn't eat that up?!)! We made a follow up 2 year appt. I'm very pleased to have found her! P.S. When we went to out 18mo check up with her primary physician, he asked who her dentist was going to be. This dentist office is top notch and my son is starting not to be afraid of going to the dentist......My son needed some major dental work Which required a specialist . As a dad I was very nervous about these procedures that had to be done but this office walked me through it step by step and helped me get it handled from the front desk to the back office to the dentist everyone in this office gets 5 stars . On his check up after his major procedures My son told he me today as we were leaving I love my dentist and all my friends in the office. I think he just about hugged everybody in the office . The Smile Gallary is an awesome place! I love the dentist and her staff. They are super friendly, the office and bathroom is super clean, and amazing looking. They have cool prizes for the little ones, and they do awesome work. We found them when my daughter was around 4 yrs old, and were with them for 8 yrs, until we had to move 40 miles away. My 6 year old needed a crown and some fillings. Dr Joelle and her staff used nitrous oxide and talked to him so caring that the experience was wonderful. We are remiss in posting this review. Should have done it a couple of months ago. The folks at Smile Gallery are just special. We brought our two great-grandsons, 1.5 and 3, up there for their first ever visits to a dentist. The 1.5 year old was just fine. Mellow little guy that was just fascinated with all the lights and shiny stuff. His older brother was NOT mellow. Though we had been pumping him up about getting a prize when he finished, when it came time to crawl up in the chair, he wasn't having any of it. Long story short, about half the staff "ganged" up on him and he breezed through getting his teeth cleaned for the first time. He also needed a little extra work on some minor damage to his upper front teeth which Dr Hearn did even though it was not scheduled (we drove up from Modesto). All in all, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. The 3 year old, now almost 4, still talks about his "friend Dr Hearn." These folks were recommended by a long-time friend and it was well worth the travel time. We will continue bringing the boys up there in the future. read more

I was not impressed the first visit. A lot of money spent on fluff. Felt like they were trying to hard to make it such a pleasant experience. Maybe they need to spend some money on customer service training. Called for a return visit, waited to long according to the extremely rude receptionist although, it was fine to put me on hold for over 15 minutes. Would not recomend unless you want to spend money on a lot of unnescesary services with a pompous rude flair. read more

I brought my 2 year old son and 3 year old daughter to Dr Speeds office for regular cleaning appointments. First of all very very clean and beautiful office. The front office staff were very friendly and greeted us with smiles. We did not wait long at all. The back office staff were very sweet and most importantly patient with two very young kids. Dr Speed then checked them over in a soft sweet way that kept my kids at ease. They got new tooth brushes and some little goodies on the way out. They also got tokens for the machines out front for doing a good job at the appointments. The kids loved that. After scheduling my next appointment and leaving my two year old looks up at me and says "thank you mommy for taking me to the dentist" so cute. They then told everyone we ran into how they "got" to go the dentist today. That pretty much sums it up. Great experience. I highly recommend Dr Speed and staff. read more
