But as soon as I had something of a serious nature for the first time in my life, he for some reason is not able to accept my complaints as valid. And he breaks one of the rules of doctoring which is to believe the patient's complaints! He has actually for the past seven months been denying that what I describe as my symptoms are happening! This is the logical extension of his sunny disposition. I remember now that he has often been that way. I once told him that after wearing a heart monitor for 13 days, the result was first degree heart block. He said, "Oh, that's nothing!" My stepdaughter told him he had a spot on her lung of 0.5 centimeter. He said, "Oh, that's nothing!" And I remember how in past years, I always leave his office feeling better than when I came. But the day came seven months when I presented with a serious condition, and he has persisted and persisted since in saying, "Oh, that's nothing. It's all in your mind." (He has actually told me that the main thing wrong with me is my mind. I learned that that is called "gaslighting.") And I know that isn't true, and I know he is wrong. And if this same thing happens to you, you should be apprised that that is the day you must make a decision--whether to continue to put yourself in danger or to part ways.

I did find a PAYING job and Dr. Mekles is very supportive and shows real interest. With Dr. Mekles - I'm able to taper my benzodiazepine slowly - with lots of support from the doctor. He's very patient and is very understanding and knowledgeable about withdrawal symptoms. He didn't push me - but prodded me to do this vital step The secretary is very helpful. She answers text messages immediately - to assist with medication renewal requests and appointment changes - when needed. Yet, during the call, Dr. Pell casually informed me that they are not conducting ADHD assessments at this time and may resume, possibly in January or February of next year. This immediately raised a red flag: if you are not offering the service, why accept an appointment for it? Why bill insurance for something you never intended to provide? The entire interaction lasted 18 minutes, and not a single part of it resembled an evaluation. Instead, we spent the bulk of the time discussing my career. He asked about my former psychiatrist's nationality; he seemed very interested in why he didn't take insurance "as a Black doctor" (which I perceive as a common conflation between race and poverty). He then asked only two quick, surface-level questions about why I was seeking an ADHD assessment. Then in the same breath that he told me they are not doing assessments, he also told me that I probably do not have ADHD. He said this despite the fact that I was coming to him for a second opinion after already completing a comprehensive, legitimate ADHD evaluation with a diagnosis from an actual specialist. (I did not share I was coming in for a second opinion, as I didn't want it to be biased). He provided no testing, no structured questions, no clinical methodology, nothing that even remotely resembled evidence-based practice. The whole thing felt dismissive, and frankly, like a complete waste of my time. I left the appointment feeling misled and deeply uncomfortable, as insurance had been billed for a service that was never delivered. If you are seeking serious mental health care, diagnostic clarity, or responsible clinical practice, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. This experience felt unhelpful and entirely out of alignment with what any patient should expect from a licensed provider.

I went for a preventative care visit with no complaints and she wanted to give me a diagnosis that she can bill for (redness of the eyes bilaterally from fatigue is NOT conjunctivitis; fibrocystic changes of the breasts are NORMAL) - excessive testing that is NOT a part of preventative care (hearing test, etc) that she bills you. - excessive labs - I did not have any thyroid issues and yet she sent all the labs including obscure ones. - I most definitely do not need ultrasound imaging of the breasts under any medical guidelines at my age and presentation. - Poor bedside manner, she was in a hurry and frustrated with my questions.

The first thing you'll notice is that this medical center is in a general office building that has a turnstile entrance for employees only. You'll have to check in at the front desk as a visitor. So obviously this place is by appointment only. I had an appointment with a rheumatologist. Taking the elevator to the 4th floor, you'll realize it's a very modern facility. There's even a fingerprint ID system if you opted for it. My only bad experience comes from the paperwork end, aka the reception desk. The first think they asked for is a paper referral. After all the paperwork that they emailed me in advance to fill out, asking me to come 30 minutes prior to my appointment for more paperwork, and an "electronic" prescription registration, they wanted me to print out my referral. Well, first off, I had a paper referral, but for another doctor, the reception didn't want to schedule me for my first option because that doctor wasn't "ready" for my HMO, even though the entire internet and my HMO said that she takes my insurance. Since it is quite a travel to my PCP, I phoned for my second referral. The center kept calling me after 6pm for a hard or faxed copy of this referral. The office was closed the next day so I had to call the day after for a referral. I asked my PCP office to fax it to the number the Center gave me (all 646 numbers). Long story short, they never received the fax but never bother call me until after 6pm again. So on the day of my appointment, you can see why I'm very crabby about the whole paper referral demand. I went onto my HMO account and just printed out what was available to me (which was my account number, and the referral authorization number). The receptionist told me to wait 5 minutes to see if that was valid and she'll be with me shortly. Well, she never got back to me, so I waited 15 minutes before I went back to the front desk again. "Oh right!" she exclaimed (she forgot about me). So my "electronic referral" is acceptable and I just need to fill out a couple more forms and then I'm done. So after the whole paper mess is all over with, the doctor and nurses are actually capable and nice. The rheumatologist I saw was very professional and listened well while giving good insights. Equipment-wise, this place is state-of-the-art. Clean, pristine, cloth gowns! (not even disposable). When I asked for water, they gave me juice instead. If you can afford it and you don't mind the heighten security along with receptionists that want to make sure you can pay for it, give it a try!
