So I'm in Roanoke Rapids, NC this past weekend and I have a hankering for burger that's different…read morefrom what I get up in VA. I was definitely in the right place for something completely different from the norm. My cousin just moved into this town and she didn't know any place either so thanks to yelp, I found this joint, hidden in a little corner, packed with locals. Atmosphere was like a super small mom & pop burger joint with very little seating area. The service here was great. The waitress super nice and she knew we were new to the area and would be slow ordering but she was patient with a smile. I had the double cheeseburger with bacon lettuce tomato with ketchup. These burger was ultra thin. It's one of those styles were the meat is in a ball and when it hits the grill, they squash it down into a super thin slice. It was fantastic. Lots of flavor, a little crunch on the edge, and very juicy. I could have 3 more of these babies and add like 5 patties to each bun. The price was excellent, coming from a guy who's using to paying the ridiculous prices here in NoVA. it was $2.99 and each extra pattie was an extra dollar. They were out of onion rings but the fries were great. Overall, this was a great place to get a burger and I would have loved to get the other stuff they had there like hotdogs, etc. I took a star off cause the buns weren't anything to write home about and the fries might have been from Food Lions, not sure what the waitress meant. Overall, fantastic cheap eats that makes you wonder why you even bother with McD. Also, they only take cash, no credit cards allowed.

I would have preferred it earlier instead of just waiting in line. But she was nice, so took my order my food came fast. Definitely home style cooking, everything was hot, fresh and made right then. It was a delicious burger and chili cheese fries, I will be returning!

The Hen and the Hog is an amazing gem in the quaint town of Halifax! I am so happy to see that they…read moreare reviving their downtown and making it as if not more beautiful than it was years ago! Upon walking in, I was taken in by the rustic decor and large flowing steps. We picked a table away from the door as it was super chilly! My colleagues and I checked out the menu, and my eyes immediately jumped to the vegetarian chili. Sweet potatoes are topped with lentils, onions, beans, and cinammon. I could not resist, and after the waitresses' recommendation, it was a total yes for me! The chili came out not in a bowl but on four sweet potatoes! They were so cute that I did not want to eat them at all, but of course I did! Each bite of the chili had a hint of something that I did not get in the last bite. It was so full of flavor, and again, the presentation was not what I was expecting at all! I was able to take my leftover home for later, which I can not wait to devour! The Hen and the Hog is a must go to while in this area! It's such an amazing gem!

On the recommendation of a woman running an estate sale where we stopped, we went to The Hen and Hog for lunch. From the start, it was a lovely experience. Our waitress, Diann, was so friendly and fun. The menu looked so good that we all decided together what to order so we could try a bunch of things by sharing. The decor inside is super interesting- the states listed on the stairs, historical documents on the walls, really neat industrial and wood decor. I tried the pork sandwich box which was amazing!
