They also had other useful bits and bobs such as nuts and herbs, and 2 packets of Foxes chocolate biscuits for a mere £1! That was, of course, a special offer - I can't promise you that that is a permanent feature... I bought an enormous bag of Braeburn apples and a less enormous bag of nectarines, - plus my 2 packets of biscuits it all came to £3.58, which seemed very reasonable.

The only negative thing I have to say about Hughes is that the aisles are narrow and I soon discovered people have to walk down them in single file. If you want to go past somebody you'll have to shuffle or squeeze past them. I'm sure this invaded people's personal space, like it did mine. Birmingham has loads of shops like Hughes and many of the ones I've seen are quiet unclean and it's obvious the products have been left out for a while. Here though, there's probably fresher fruit and vegetable here than in the supermarket not to mention the prices are a lot better. As well as the normal prices being low, I was also pleased to see the amount of deals they had. Two boxes of strawberries can be picked up for £1.00 and a bunch of bananas for just under £1.00. So I think this shop is underrated.

Big supermarkets…read morehave a stranglehold on producers and consumers alike, and places like this are slowly being forced to the wall, which is another reason to give MFB Fruits your money. They carry a great selection of fruits that are always fresh and tasty and competitive in terms of the other outlets in the area (the fruit in the nearby Co-Op is rubbish and pricey by comparison). As a fairly keen gardener I always have a look at their display of plants out on the street, too. There you can get a good selection of bedding plants, shrubs and the like for reasonable price.

I say 'home-grown' - in fact, as I looked round their produce I'm not sure I discovered anything that was actually grown in the UK - which is a bit depressing. Do we really not produce anything any more? Why do we need to fly apples in from flipping New Zealand?! Anyway, this is not the fault of MFB Fruits, who are simply stocking it, so I shall talk about them and take my producer-consumer rants elsewhere. As I said, I find shops that sell fresh groceries super-appealing. I'm not sure why - maybe they make me think I am skipping through fields, plucking juicy strawberries at my whim, rather than skulking up and down the aisles of a a supermarket, where everything is wrapped in plastic. Either way, this is a great greengrocers: all the fruit & veg looks (and tastes, I can tell you) really fresh and lovely (despite the fact that it has obviously travelled some way to be here...). The shop itself is really clean as well - which is reassuring for a grocers. There's nothing worse than a grubby, mouldy grocers. I bought a bag of apples, a bag of apricots and a bag of plums which cost me a princely £3.50, which I thought was great - considering how expensive fruit can be in supermarkets. I can also tell you that they are all delicious - I nearly polished off the apricots in one fell swoop.

NEVER EVER GOING THERE AGAIN. AVOID THESE FAKESTERS. MEDINA SUPERSTORE, MAS BAZAR and even BANGLa STATION with its high prices is better than Paks supermarket lozells road, atleast in Bangl station you gonna get fresh produce at the weight it's supposed to be at even if they charge extra but at PaKsSupermarket Lozells not only they charge you but the hive you produce which is gone bad and even from there they will steal a few pieces out. Outside you'll find a great selection of shrubs, plants and vegetables to plant in your garden, and at extremely reasonable prices. I get the impression that most of the items for sale, and in particular the veg plants, have been grown by hand, either by the shop themselves or else by a trusted local nursery - the care and attention is evident in each plant, and these are clearly not the product of some anonymous uber-greenhouse knocking out bedding plants by the thousand. Inside the store is cool and welcoming and beautifully stocked with fresh, organic produce that is a treat for the eyes and nose. After visiting this place you'll think twice about selecting the somewhat tired looking veg on offer at the local supermarket - this is super-fresh stuff that looks and smells great. The staff are friendly and helpful and know their stuff, both about the plants and the produce. They are also pretty fair - if you select a plant that is the last one available and it looks a wee bit sorry for itself, they'll normally either knock something off the price, or else not charge you at all. Highly recommended!

During the development of the village square, the market had to move further down Vicarage road, but has since relocated to the quite eccentric updated space, which see's random fountains of water and grave stones sunken into pathways. It's quite a surreal experience, and I don't suggest walking through the space while drunk. The area becomes even more bizarre when taken over by the farmers market, as stalls are placed in between these randomly sunken stones. It reminds me of some sort parallel Kings Heath, where everything is melting in the village square, but the people just act as though it is a normality and set up a market over the space. Anyway, the local food sold here is of high quality, and many of the Moseley Farmers Market stall holders also set up here. Meaning that if you miss the Moseley market, you can always catch them at the Kings Heath one. There are also some different stalls who sell better jams than Moseley, in my opinion, so I always buy jam from Kings Heath market instead. Prices of products aren't necessarily cheap, but you certainly get your value for money, as the flavour of the food (especially the jam) is top notch.

It was a delicious surprise, literally, because with all food stalls available it was almost a truly gastronomic experience. I regret having breakfast because empty belly in this place can be a very good starting. I just loved the farming made products available there. It's almost like going back to the deep south of Brazil or some countryside cities where farm culture is preserved and you always have the possibility of visiting farms and eat their delicious food. I heard about these farmer markets in Birmingham areas before but it's just unbelievable the variety of cakes, baked breads, handmade cheese and other fresh and pretty healthy products available in these places. If you fancy organic products, there are good source of vegetables and fruit to choose as well. The plants, flowers and other memorabilia are also a charming complement to these markets and people working on it are usually very gentle. I like the fact it's held on Saturdays (first of each month) because it makes things very easy for who works during week and just have time to catch up with it during the weekends. I am glad I made Kings Heath Farmers market. In Brazil we have some similar street markets ( with the difference that we sell almost everything ) and it's always good to find such a lovely experience like this here as well.
