I love a local grocer. Hughes is no exception - they had a really good selection of fruit and veg,…read morewhich all looked in very good nick. They also had other useful bits and bobs such as nuts and herbs, and 2 packets of Foxes chocolate biscuits for a mere £1! That was, of course, a special offer - I can't promise you that that is a permanent feature... I bought an enormous bag of Braeburn apples and a less enormous bag of nectarines, - plus my 2 packets of biscuits it all came to £3.58, which seemed very reasonable.

The only negative thing I have to say about Hughes is that the aisles are narrow and I soon discovered people have to walk down them in single file. If you want to go past somebody you'll have to shuffle or squeeze past them. I'm sure this invaded people's personal space, like it did mine. Birmingham has loads of shops like Hughes and many of the ones I've seen are quiet unclean and it's obvious the products have been left out for a while. Here though, there's probably fresher fruit and vegetable here than in the supermarket not to mention the prices are a lot better. As well as the normal prices being low, I was also pleased to see the amount of deals they had. Two boxes of strawberries can be picked up for £1.00 and a bunch of bananas for just under £1.00. So I think this shop is underrated.

Big supermarkets…read morehave a stranglehold on producers and consumers alike, and places like this are slowly being forced to the wall, which is another reason to give MFB Fruits your money. They carry a great selection of fruits that are always fresh and tasty and competitive in terms of the other outlets in the area (the fruit in the nearby Co-Op is rubbish and pricey by comparison). As a fairly keen gardener I always have a look at their display of plants out on the street, too. There you can get a good selection of bedding plants, shrubs and the like for reasonable price.

I say 'home-grown' - in fact, as I looked round their produce I'm not sure I discovered anything that was actually grown in the UK - which is a bit depressing. Do we really not produce anything any more? Why do we need to fly apples in from flipping New Zealand?! Anyway, this is not the fault of MFB Fruits, who are simply stocking it, so I shall talk about them and take my producer-consumer rants elsewhere. As I said, I find shops that sell fresh groceries super-appealing. I'm not sure why - maybe they make me think I am skipping through fields, plucking juicy strawberries at my whim, rather than skulking up and down the aisles of a a supermarket, where everything is wrapped in plastic. Either way, this is a great greengrocers: all the fruit & veg looks (and tastes, I can tell you) really fresh and lovely (despite the fact that it has obviously travelled some way to be here...). The shop itself is really clean as well - which is reassuring for a grocers. There's nothing worse than a grubby, mouldy grocers. I bought a bag of apples, a bag of apricots and a bag of plums which cost me a princely £3.50, which I thought was great - considering how expensive fruit can be in supermarkets. I can also tell you that they are all delicious - I nearly polished off the apricots in one fell swoop.

Based on the atmosphere and quality of wine, I love this little spot. It is so cosy. We were the only customers in the store and received superb service. The owner runs this location and a few other shops, plus hosts food tents at festivals during Christmas. She came over to our table and made some wine recommendations and gave us a bowl of crisps on the house. My partner, Seth S., and I both ordered the Pinot Noir from Romania. It was delightfully full-bodied and smooth. The lighting is dimmed just enough to encourage good conversation and a comfortable atmosphere. There are two main rooms for seating, each with groupings of chairs or booths around bistro style tables. The art and decor feel like a brasserie. I would highly recommend The Deli for a delicious glass of wine (or 3) and great conversation with friends.

Breakfast Review:…read more One of the best Full English breakfasts in the Midlands! Its a wonderful deli, on the High Street in Boldmere, with outdoor seating - which is superb when the sun comes out! The breakfasts are awesome. Superb sausages, great bacon, exceptional bread, (the deli sells some of the best bread in Birmingham). 2 succulent sausage, 2 bacon, fried egg, 2 half tomatoes, mushrooms. toast, quality butter. Its one of the best in Birmingham, (I rate it joint 2nd). The staff are great, headed by Pip the owner and her team of assistants, (including sons). The only real problem with this place is that I always spend a fortune on their amazing cheeses, breads, cakes and pate's. Try it. You will thank me!
