Our first trip to Hawaii and as the family photographer, I wanted to have some Maui memories that I could actually be in. We are from Texas and I was very hesitant sending money and booking something "so far away". The Maui trip was expensive to say the least so extra money for the photos was a treat to myself. It also turned out that my daughter was going to get engaged so it was a perfect opportunity to get it all in one 'shot". John was originally going to let an associate do our session, but after many phone calls he wanted to shoot us and our moment. The location was paradise! The pictures are phenomenal! SO many to choose from and SO worth it. Reading the other reviews and hearing about John's time frame is true. It did take longer than he said but the photos were well WORTH the wait. We went back to Maui to celebrate our anniversary and wanted a photographer to capture the celebration. John brought a lot of energy to the shoot which helped us relax and get gorgeous pictures. John was super flexible with our booking and made every effort to get the best images; taking into account our son's jet lag, our vacation plans, and the impeding rain. We actually ended up doing our shoot a day early than scheduled because the weather was spot on and he didn't want to pass it up. I was in tears viewing our photos for the first time. Prior to this post I left a Facebook review and yes it was deleted. I posted our experience and nothing in the post was not accurate. We booked for engagement photo, & wedding. Was told we would get 2 photographers. Engagement photos were great. Evening of Rehearsal Jamila didn't show up. Only after we reached out to her she told us she was sick. So no planning or to see the venue ahead of the wedding. Day of Wedding she was late. Only 1 photographer- her. When I asked were the other photographer was she said her husband got called in to work. So again not notice of this. Surely not what expected. When it come to taking picture. I would except the person behind the camera direct and ask for pose. It was not that way. When I asked Jamila what photos she would like her reply was whatever y'all want. We received the pictures on a USB only after contacting her to get them. On May 5th she finally meet after being late at meeting for that meetup. Then told we would have the link the next morning. When we put the USB in multiple computers there were green lines through the photo. When I contacted her she told me to try another computer. The next day we still didn't have the link we were promised. I messaged Jamila I was told you don't have to blow up my phone. We only had her Facebook to communicate with her. I told her I felt like a customer that has already paid in full you would think you would make sure we are taking care of. Her response was sorry, not sorry my clients who's wedding she was currently doing takes priority. Well it was easy to see that. We never got one communication without us asking questions. I wouldn't recommend JMC for a wedding. read more

We had a family of 17 for a family reunion in Maui and had John take our photos. He is wonderful! The kids all loved him. He even brought them treats! The parents appreciated his great ideas and versatility and he gives you all the photos ready to download and print or will print them for you! So reasonable and easy to work with! We had a terrible experience using John which seems to contradict many of the other reviews on here. I had looked for a few weeks to find a reputable, trustworthy photographer to take our family pictures while on vacation in Maui and John seemed great. I spoke with him over the phone, we made arrangements, etc. I had to reach out to him a few times to remind him to send me the contract and session confirmations but hey, I thought that being kinda spacey was just part of 'island life'. An hour before our scheduled photo time on Maui I get an email from John saying that this guy, Austin, was coming to meet us at our hotel. That was it- no detail, explanation or anything. Who the heck is Austin? It was too late to panic and Austin showed up on time and seemed nice so we went along with it- I actually thought that maybe John was going to meet us on location. NOPE! This guy Austin spent 30 minutes with us (per our Turtle package time), took some casual pictures, tried to stage us for a portrait but with 3 little kids that just wasn't working out. He didn't really seem to know what to do with us- he kinda followed us around and didn't provide much guidance. I have 3 little kids so you can imagine the chaos that ensued. We walked down to the beach, he took some candids of us, we got wet- and that was it. It was very fast, very informal and Austin said he was going to edit and send out the pictures in 2 weeks. I did not receive any follow up communication from John as to why Austin (Who is Austin, anyway?) showed up and not him. I get home from Maui and a couple days later I get the invoice for the remainder of the payment fee. I am feeling really frustrated that I had hired John to take our pictures and he sends this other random guy and there was no explanation or anything, so I immediately called John to talk about it. Turns out, John said, he had a family emergency and had to fly to Virginia so he asked Austin to take our pictures. He didn't want to 'worry us' which is why he didn't let me know what was going on. Don't worry, he said, he has used Austin many times, he is a fantastic photographer, don't worry, the pictures came out great, don't worry, he saw them, etc. etc. etc. He said he would knock off $50 from my package fee since he knew I was frustrated. John said he would personally edit all of the pictures and not Austin and I would be happy with them. Okay, great. I am just crossing my fingers I get one family picture from all of this. John sends me a revised invoice (after I had to remind him) and I pay immediately. A few days later I get an email notification that my entire deposit was refunded by John. No follow up email, no communication, nothing. Just a full refund. At this point I start thinking I am not getting any pictures. I give John a few days to reach out to me, assuming that he would follow up a full refund with SOMETHING. But he doesn't. So I send him an email saying" I saw that you refunded my entire package cost and did not provide an explanation. Can you please let me know what is going on?" John responds: "Yes I'll be calling today. I found out some information from Austin he had not Informed me on." Turns out Austin, his trusted photographer friend that he "had used hundreds of times over many years" relapsed on meth and took some awful, awful pictures and john said he couldn't reasonably charge me for them. I was first confused since when I had spoke with him a couple weeks back he said he saw the pictures and they were great, and there were some "really good shots". But then I was pissed because these were my once a year family pictures while on vacation and after all the research I did on hiring a photographer, this was happening. So John sent me the link to what I can only assume were the salvageable pictures and he was right, they were all horrible. The lighting was terrible, the shots were out of focus, the framing was terrible- there was not one picture in there that I truly liked. This was a complete waste of my time and effort to arrange for family pictures on vacation and its not like I can just jump on a flight a fly back to Maui to have them redone. I found John to be very panicky, anxious and hard to believe.There were times on the phone I asked him to please stop talking because he would not stop long enough for me to express my dissatisfaction for how things went down. I was so tired of hearing one excuse after another and all I wanted to was to be done with this whole mess. Totally do not recommend this photographer or company. read more

This is the first time I have ever reviewed anyone- John's photography is so amazing that I had to take time to write a review. Our family photos might be the best part of our Maui family vacation. John met us at our Four Seasons hotel on time and did an amazing job capturing our family photos at the resort and on the beach at sunset. He was professional on the business side and exceeded our expectations on the photo shoot experience and the results. He even shared the photos earlier than we thought. I wish I could rewind our life and have John be the photographer for our previous family photos and events. He has an eye for detail (ensuring my wedding ring was facing out straight, baby's hair was perfect, the scenery was perfect). My husband and I were in Maui in June with our three young sons and selected John to do our family photo shoot. He was really amazing. John recommended the best beach and even met us at our hotel so that we could follow him to the site and not get lost. He took his time, was very interactive with the kids, and took great still and action shots. He really made sure we got all the shots we wanted. We ended up with tons of great pictures to capture our family's trip. I love that John charges a flat fee and you get to keep all the digital pictures, rather than just receiving a handful of prints the way some other photographers do. Thank you John!! read more

I feel so lucky and blessed to have worked with JMC photography not only once but TWICE! The first time we had a pleasure of working with John was during our family photo-shoot while on vacation in Maui. At some point during our pictures my now husband went over and told John that he wanted to propose, John did such an amazing job with setting the proposal up last second that when it happened I thought he knew before we were even there! The pictures turned out amazing! This year after we got married we went back to Maui for our honeymoon and I brought my dress because I could not decide if i wanted to do a trash-the-dress photo-shoot. Three days before we were supposed to go back to Portland I decided this is what I wanted so I called john and gave him my time line and of course he made it work! We went right back to the beach where my husband proposed and were able to get the most beautiful shots of before, during, and after sunset. I am already so excited for my next life event and to be able to go back to Maui so John can keep capturing these beautiful photos of my family and I.
