We loved working with JJ! Through both the engagement shoot and the wedding itself, she completely captured our vision! JJ shot our wedding at Nestldown in September 2022, and in short, she and her crew did a phenomenal job! We got to know JJ as she was one of the recommended photographers at Nestldown. After browsing through multiple portfolios, we decided to choose her as we loved how she often uses warm light in her photos, and how each photo looks natural, yet intimate and magical at the same time! September rolled around, and despite many days of sun the week prior and how rare it is to have rain this time of the year, it was an unexpected downpour on Sunday lol. Originally we scheduled the wedding photo shoot with JJ, and our wedding date had to be postponed due to the covid situation; We ended up changing to the family post-wedding shooting! Plus, our young daughter didn't get the vaccine and might be risky to explore in the public. I've never written a Yelp review before today, and I might never again, but for JJ I will because she is *THAT* good and I'd regret not giving due credit. JJ shot my best friend's wedding so I was already familiar with her beautiful work, but she also happened to be one of the approved photographers for my own wedding venue at Nestldown in Los Gatos. From the first moment, JJ was a consummate professional who responded to our inquiries right away and was very transparent in pricing, deadlines, expectations, etc. It was a no brainer for us to book her, and my partner and I were grateful that she had availability to do both our engagement and wedding day photography. For those reading this review and are still on the fence, don't waste any more time and BOOK HER. My partner and I can both be a bit camera shy and spotlight-reluctant, but JJ helped make us feel comfortable and natural every step of the way. She took the time to get to know us as a couple, asked thoughtful questions about what we want/didn't want, what type of photography style we were inspired by, and developed the entire look of our engagement shoot based on our "vibe"--all I can say is to trust JJ's creative vision because she is great at what she does. She scouted a really gorgeous location for our photo session, gave helpful styling feedback, and would verbally guide us throughout our sessions (hand placement, posing, expressions) to ensure that we looked great in our photos. We reviewed the type of photos we wanted ahead of time; from solo portraits to posed group shots, close-up's, full frame, candid photos, night time/day time and natural/artificial lighting--JJ got 'em all, and I know it's because she's also a great team leader. There was risk of inclement weather on our wedding day, but JJ was well prepared for any outcome and lighting issues. We also incorporated a lot of cultural elements in our ceremony and JJ took it upon herself to familiarize herself with all the different customs so that she could properly photograph them. I'm sure everyone says this about their own photos, but ours were hands down the most breathtaking wedding photos I have ever seen. Like, straight out of a magazine. We were truly blown away by the phenomenal job that JJ did for our wedding photos. We had seen JJ's gallery before we signed with her and had high expectations going in, but JJ and team surpassed even our very high expectations. We really couldn't recommend her enough. First off, JJ has a great talent for capturing natural, raw emotion in the moment. In our wedding and engagement photos, she managed to capture all the emotional, joyful, initimate moments. Those pictures really mean a lot to us - the candid shots that caught a loved one's reaction to a speech or a beautiful moment with our family are things that we will treasure forever. We also really appreciated how JJ cared deeply about what we wanted. She is a great listener and was just took so much effort to make sure that she understood what was important to us and what we hoped to capture with her photos. JJ also went above and beyond to ensure that our wedding photos would be amazing. For example, we wanted to have our tea ceremony at an outdoor pavilion instead of an indoor room (which would have been better for photographs as we can control the light). When we told JJ we preferred the outdoor pavilion to the indoor room, she found ways to make the lighting work and without us asking, she scouted out the venue ahead of time to get a sense of what the light in the pavilion would be like. As a couple, we're not very good at having our pictures taken- we look a little unnatural sometimes. I am so glad I found JJ on Yelp to capture our wedding ceremony and reception. I really loved her style and the way she captures candid moments based on her previous work. When we met on call for the first time, she seemed so sweet and curious. Thats when we decided to go with her. We had to reschedule our wedding once due to the complications surrounding the pandemic. Her style is impeccable. Our photoshoot last May turned out better than we could have imagined. She took us to an amazing secluded beach spot and was great at giving us good directions in how to pose and move to give us the best shots. Our friend recommended JJ as our wedding photographer and the immediate first impression we had when browsing her online portfolio was that she was a unique and different photographer. There are many talented photographers but our experience working with JJ for our engagement and wedding sessions confirms that she is a photographer that is constantly exploring new creative compositions of people and environment. I want to share some honest opinion about JJCHEN based on my customer experience. I know she have tried to get clients to write good yelp reviews with additional retouched images for free (which is totally fine as a marketing effort, but just an fyi). But I still feel yelp is a place for transparent and honest information. We booked JJChen for our engagement session and wedding day photography coverage. The engagement photos came out decent. But we are extremely unhappy and unsatisfied with the wedding day experience. And I am actually not the only one who was unhappy with her service. If you can read Chinese, do take a look at the post below in a popular forum for Chinese overseas in the US, where quite a few people complained about her work / service attitude: http://forums.huaren.us/showtopic.aspx?topicid=1676193&&page=1 I will list a few facts of my experience here: 1. Photo quality: 1) BLURRY IMAGES!!!! FAIL TO KEEP THE PHOTOS FOCUSED AND CLEAR!!! This is consistently one of the biggest problems of JJ's work. Take a careful look at a couple sets of her photos, especially those wedding photos that meant to capture movements, you will see what I mean. You can randomly pick a few as they are very common in her work. This is obviously a serious issue for shooting a wedding... 2) Color: As you can see from the photos I uploaded here, the color is completely off. The composition of the image is very odd. Those outdoor photos, the lighting is very flat and we can't even see people's noses. Our wedding was at Palm Event Center, which is a very beautiful venue for photos. We were shocked when receiving these images. People's lips were purple in the photo and the faces look like wax. I was really upset and dwell on it for a long time. I can tolerate certain mistakes, but such off pictures is something I can't accept. 2. Being a "Wedding-day Nazi"...very picky and manipulating This is what I feel the most disappointing. JJ is very manipulating on the wedding day and almost require a perfect setting to return decent photos. For example, she asked me to tell the officiant before-head to remind guests not to stand up taking photos during the ceremony. And I did. The officiant was quite surprised as he said this was the first time he heard such concern from a photographer. When I pointed out some photos look unacceptably off, JJ tried to find excuses to explain why some photos came out bad: 1) For those outdoor photos, she said they were taken at a time (~3:30 pm I believe) when the light is strong, so there is no way to make the photos look not as flat. 2) On those ceremony photos, she said the venue lighting is not ideal and is difficult to shoot. 3) On the fact that we are missing some close-up get-ready photos, she blamed the hotel room is not large enough. I am really unhappy to hear these excuses. The reason why we hire a professional is because we trust they know how to handle these challenges. If a photographer requires a "perfect setting" and so many environment conditions in order to return decent photos, how can the customers trust her? As we all know, there will be something going wrong on your wedding day, regardless of how carefully you have planned. And actually, our wedding was extremely smooth and almost perfect (I think all guests feel the same way). 3. Customer service: I reached out to JJ to ask if she can help fine-tune some images. And I am only asking because they are way too off to accept. And as a bride, I am really frustrated to show photos like these to my friends and family. To me, I think that's a legitimate request and I am only asking for tweaking 3 images. However, JJ said no, as photoshop is a very subjective thing. She won't do further retouch once the project is done. This is such a bad customer experience. I think wedding photography is essentially a service industry. And customer satisfaction should be the ultimate goal, especially when the customer made a reasonable request related to a big day that is once in a lifetime. 4. Unprofessional and not respecting client After dwelling on these bad images for a long time, I decided to hire ANOTHER photographer to do a post-wedding session to make up for some regrets. I know this could get personal but client has choice and it is a free market. My post-wedding photos came out amazing and all my friends were like "wow, much better than the wedding day images!" After seeing those photos on fb, JJ un-friended me from her fb friend list. This is extremely unprofessional. Client don't have the obligation to be loyal to a merchant. We feel very fortunate to have JJ as our photographer for our wedding and engagement. We have a simpler wedding and JJ is flexible with her package to shorten the wedding shooting time and gave us opportunity to do two engagement shooting instead. JJ wants the best results with her shooting and willing to invest additional time and effort so suggested us to do two locations on two different days and was very flexible on the days to accommodate the weather conditions. JJ was very professional and experienced. She's very quick to respond and gave prompt recommendations. Like a director, she had pictures and scenes on her mind and knew where we should stand and pose to get the best lighting, angle, frame and composition. She even played music for us to relax and be ourselves before the camera. One of the locations is new, and she knew instantly how to work with it with her creativity. JJ didn't just shoot to finish her job. Photo shooting is her passion and she went beyond her role stay for extra time until she got all the perfect shots. She finished editing within less a week and delivered more pictures. we received them before the holiday like a Christmas gift and shared them with our friends and families. My wife and I first got married on 10/5/2018 and prior to our wedding, we researched lots of different photographers.
