If you find yourself in Portrush one day, dear reader, and you look around you and wonder "what is it with the propensity of shops that sell nothing but tat?", then just imagine how we poor locals feel.
Where is the chorizo or the interesting bakery that sells freshly baked bread as well as local sweet meats or the art gallery where I could purchase a locally produced, well executed, water-colour? And further, where is the garage where I could have my auto-mobile repaired at a reasonable rate or where is my local town council where I could remonstrate on their inabilities to do this or that or save the town even.
They are all gone my friend, all gone, gone under the first rule of economics i.e supply and demand.
All the businesses I have listed above existed in Portrush at one stage, and I knew the people who owned them and worked in them and yes, the old Port has become like a butterfly in a topsy turvy world.....a beautiful, etherial creature into a thing that looks like shit but has potential!
So dear reader when you visit us again and wander up our Main Street and wonder why all we sell is tat you have your answer...it`s you! read more
