Yes, there are some clothes that only ladies of a certain age should consider, but Couples is also jammed with lovelies from St Martins, Desigual and lots of little independent labels. You can spend as much or as little as your budget allows as some of the ranges are very affordable while others are for special occasions only. Even the cheaper ranges look more expensive than they actually are as they're unusual and not what you'll see in chain stores. Couples also has some funky shoes and if you've got a wedding to go to, they have fascinators and wraps too. Definitely worth a visit if you want something just a little bit different to all the other fashion dollies on the high street.

Students will love the household section, with its brilliantly priced cutlery and crockery, bins, door mats and duvet covers. You really will find it hard to beat these prices. Some of the ranges are really quite worthy of even the most fussy home owners (that would be me), like the funky mugs, bowls and teapots with chickens on and the opulent fabric flowers which cost a fortune in other shops. The towels and bed linen are also pretty good quality for the rock bottom prices being charged. I have scored quite a few bargains in the toy and book sections and in summer they have great inflatables and ball games for the beach. The only department which doesn't float my boat is the clothes section. Frumpy, unfashionable and with far too much man made fibre going on. Buying clothes on a small budget doesn't have to mean a style bypass people.

Trolans is a bit of an institution as it sells so many different bits and pieces, all of them good quality and many of them you didn't even know you needed. It sells groceries, magazines, household stuff, garden benches and Man Utd merchandise. How very eclectic. My favourite parts are the deli counter, the chilled section which has lots of goodies like salads, lasagne and Magee's butchers meat. Oh, and the off licence. How great is it to be able to get your food and wine under one roof without having to go to Tesco? You'll generally find a half decent wine like Lindemans' on offer which is good news for me. The staff are all super helpful and go out of their way to chat and be friendly. That can make the queues a bit longer than they need to be, but you'd have to be really uptight to complain about that. Oh, yes, it's also a petrol station and sells hot food too. What more could you want?

Should have known that really from the name of the place, shouldn't I? We went in when the husband took a notion for a Barbour coat and a colleague told me that Smyths has a good selection. And indeed the colleague was quite right. Not only did they have a good selection in stock, but the shop owner also offered to source other styles and sizes and post them to us. How's that for customer service? There's also a wide range of gloves, jumpers and waterproofs, caps and fleeces, as well as Swiss army knives that made the sons' eyes pop. The shop owner was also more than patient when the sons insisted on lifting and poking at things no matter how many times I told them not to. Full marks to this shop for good old fashioned customer service. There are many shops that could learn a thing or two from Smyths.

The jury remains out because although you can find a great bargain here, what you won't find is good customer service. Conversation and pleasantries are an alien concept to the staff and trying something on is a disconcerting experience. The changing room is a makeshift affair in the corner of the shop and any member of staff going up or down the stairs has a full view of whoever happens to be in there. I have picked up some excellent bargains though, especially in jeans - Armanis for £25, and a designer silk jacket for £30. Be careful though, the labels on the clothes show the year and season when they were originally stocked in the Ken Young store. Some of them can be as much as 4 years old so stick to classic styles that won't look dated.
