Yes, there are some clothes that only ladies of a certain age should consider, but Couples is also jammed with lovelies from St Martins, Desigual and lots of little independent labels. You can spend as much or as little as your budget allows as some of the ranges are very affordable while others are for special occasions only. Even the cheaper ranges look more expensive than they actually are as they're unusual and not what you'll see in chain stores. Couples also has some funky shoes and if you've got a wedding to go to, they have fascinators and wraps too. Definitely worth a visit if you want something just a little bit different to all the other fashion dollies on the high street.

Moores is a traditional kind of small department store which has successfully managed to move with…read morethe times. It still retains the genteel air of an older department store, with plenty of clothes that only men and women of a certain age would wear. However, there is also lots of fashion and homewares which young and young at heart shoppers will love. There's everything from make up - Clarins and Clinique - to Canterbury rugby gear; funky costume jewellery to beautiful scented candles. Moores also has an Accessorise and Monsoon concession, a toy shop and a lovely café. The café sells only home made food that tastes how it should do and is always very busy so you might find a bit of a queue. On the top floor are kids clothes and also a toy shop which is well stocked with lego, dolls, games and jigsaws. So you can always bribe the kids with a pocket money price toy if they behave while you browse on the other two floors. They have also recently opened a Bear Factory where you can create your own bear. You can see the stuffing being churned around inside a big machine, which I find a little freaky but the kids love it.

Prices can be a little high - about £80 for a top for example - but these are lovely clothes and of course the sale is the time to shop. Kids Benetton clothes go down to 70% off but you'll need to be quick. Upstairs the ladies clothes also go down to 70% off and I have picked up some superb bargains. The most recent was a faux fur winter coat down from £150 to £45. The kids say I look like a yeti in it, but what do they know about fashion?

Kids clothes are from Gant, Hilfiger and Timberland while us ladies can choose from Part Two, Armani, D and G and Versace. Drool. You can probably tell from the labels that this is a pricey kinda shop and not somewhere most of us would buy from every week. But for a special occasion, or for a couple of splurges a year, it's perfect. In the mens and ladies departments, you'll get good old fashioned customer service without too much of the old hard sell. They will also get clothes altered for you, albeit at an extra cost. Sale time is a good time to shop when you'll pick up a bargain, particularly towards the end of the sale as prices can go down to as much as 70% off. Be warned though, during sale time, they don't accept credit cards or gift vouchers. I am going to be honest and say that I find it sharp practice not to accept gift vouchers during the sale. Why not? Someone has paid them for that gift voucher and you should be allowed to spend it when you wish. If that policy ever changes, I'll bump them up to four stars........

If they don't have your colour or size they will try to get it for you. The staff are very courteous and polite and can't do enough to help you. Its great to just call in and browse or go for something specific.

Unfortunately they are priced slightly outside of my budget but I can dream! I only ever buy in their sale which is always very good with excellent discounts. The lady in the shop is a hoot and will keep you in chat while you try on shoes of all different styles. The jury remains out because although you can find a great bargain here, what you won't find is good customer service. Conversation and pleasantries are an alien concept to the staff and trying something on is a disconcerting experience. The changing room is a makeshift affair in the corner of the shop and any member of staff going up or down the stairs has a full view of whoever happens to be in there. I have picked up some excellent bargains though, especially in jeans - Armanis for £25, and a designer silk jacket for £30. Be careful though, the labels on the clothes show the year and season when they were originally stocked in the Ken Young store. Some of them can be as much as 4 years old so stick to classic styles that won't look dated.

Should have known that really from the name of the place, shouldn't I? We went in when the husband took a notion for a Barbour coat and a colleague told me that Smyths has a good selection. And indeed the colleague was quite right. Not only did they have a good selection in stock, but the shop owner also offered to source other styles and sizes and post them to us. How's that for customer service? There's also a wide range of gloves, jumpers and waterproofs, caps and fleeces, as well as Swiss army knives that made the sons' eyes pop. The shop owner was also more than patient when the sons insisted on lifting and poking at things no matter how many times I told them not to. Full marks to this shop for good old fashioned customer service. There are many shops that could learn a thing or two from Smyths.
