Castello - Nice setting for a wonderful meal

Castello is a family run restaurant in Frome. My wife and I stumbled on the town while touring…read moreEngland. The pub hotel we took a room tonight wasn't serving dinner tonight. We asked the bar staff for recommendations, and they were enthusiastic about Costello. After our meal, so are we! Costello sits on a narrow (aren't all the streets narrow here?!?) side street. The restaurant has a look and feel that seems much more modern than the surrounding buisinesses. When you go in, it is bright, airy and chic. The staff is friendly and professional. And most are clearly Italian...my wife was especially taken by the handsome young waiters speaking British English with an Italian accent. They told us that they had been in business for 4 years. I can't believe another Yelper hasn't been here yet! Our food was excellent. The wine list was compact but complete. Setting and service wonderful.

I had a fish based rissotto with contained 5 large mussels...Incredibly it was served to me with 2 open and 3 still closed...NEVER EVER serve mussels that are not open..Every chef on the planet should know this. The manager apologised and went and got me some more which had been cooked in, I think, a tomato based sauce...I didn't like them at all and they did not match my original mussels..He offered me a desert on the house which I accepted. This experienced blemished what should have been a lovely evening. So disappointed. Will I return...Not sure as there are loads of restaurants out there to choose from. I think this mistake must lay with the chefs who should have checked the mussels before sending them out .Dining out is not cheap nowadays so customer expectations are high !

The option for a hot stone to prepare one's own steak was super cool, a nice fun touch (though I guess it absolves the chef of any blame of over/under-cooking, haha!). My filet was beautifully cut, and came with several delicious sides and sauces. As an added bonus the entire team here was very helpful and aware about gluten allergies! Loved our visit here and hope to recommend it to more people visiting Frome!

We got the following: -Steak and ale pie (very packed with flavor and delicious) -Lamb rump toast (very large portion and also very delicious) The prices were pretty affordable and although we came did dinner, we noticed they have lots of lunch deals. I would recommend if you are visiting. The service is nice and they let you dine and take your time.

The foyer has a fish tank, reminiscent of restaurants in the Far East - although the fish here are not for eating! We had the mixed vegetarian starter for 3 people (£9.90 per person) to start. This included spring rolls, samosas, "vegetarian chicken" skewers (made of tofu), deep fried onion rings and deep fried seaweed. The spring rolls and seaweed were very tasty, but the onion rings were a little bland. The "vegetarian chicken" is an acquired taste (or rather, texture) - but certainly interesting. For our mains my partner had stir fried chicken with cashew nuts, and I had stir-fried tofu with cashew nuts (with generous quantities of tofu). With this, we had a portion of stir-fried vegetables. In hindsight, we should have gone for a spicier option, as we found the dishes to be perfectly edible, but rather bland - surprising for Chinese cuisine. The overall bill with drinks and service came to £30 a head, which was good value. Service was efficient and friendly. I'm sure we'll be back - it is a favourite of a friend of mine - but next time we'd go for one of the spicier or sweet & sour options.

I've only been in there for a take-away so can't comment on the service in the restaurant. However I can say it's smartly decorated chinoiserie themed, and the waiting area for take-aways is the same as for in-house tables - very comfortable and luxurious. Prices aren't cheap, and there's a bit of a wait for the food to be prepared but the quality is very superior and the portion sizes are good. The sort of place you'd go for a treat!
