I have been taking Brazillian Jiu Jitsu classes at Sun Dojo for about 6 months now. There is so…read moremuch to this place! Community - This is a very welcoming dojo. I was super intimidated before joining but once I worked up the nerve, what I found was a group of positive, friendly people who are here to learn, to get better at Jiu Jitsu and at life. Many people who train here have recommended it to friends or family, or Windsor Terrace neighbors, and there really is a community feel to it. Teachers - It's a special thing to find teachers who can meet you where you are, be supportive and patient, but who also push you to do better, show up for yourself, set big goals and put in 100%. Different instructors have different styles, but all are all great at breaking down complicated techniques, while encouraging you to think deeper about why something works. Everyone gets equal guidance during class. As a beginner, you will be helped, not ignored. Fitness (physical/mental) - Jiu Jitsu is a very challenging workout and it WILL improve your fitness. Classes include intense bursts or agility drills and you will sweat and your heart will pump! But it engages your mind as well as your body. You start to think about things like anatomy and leverage and gravity (even if you don't yet know how to put it all together). No treadmill workout is going to give you that. Heart - Sun Dojo encourages you to take the principals you learn on the mat into the rest of your life. What could you do with more self-knowledge, courage, discipline, less ego and a healthier body? I know I want to find out! Special shout to Professor Laurel who was my first contact at Sun Dojo and who really helped (and still helps!) to ease me into things.

Very happy I joined. My experience (as a beginner) has been overwhelming positive. Big thanks to…read moreProf. Carroll and the community of instructors + students for being so welcoming during my first few weeks at the dojo. Looking forward to more. The basic classes are gentle (i.e. you won't get injured), but challenging enough to improve overall fitness and to make some widely applicable self-defense techniques second-nature to the students. An unexpected benefit at Sun Dojo is the attendance of some advanced students in the basic classes (advanced classes typically follow basic classes on the schedule, so the basic classes probably serve as a refresher for the advanced students). The benefit to beginners like me is that we often get to partner with some seasoned (and patient) people who are already comfortable with the techniques, and often help reinforce the correct way to practice.

I was told that for my trial I could pick any one type of art I wanted to try. I made the mistake of selecting "kickboxing & cardio" thinking that meant intense kickboxing. It turned to really be just cardio exercise from martial artists. It did not teach any fighting techniques. Good cardio exercise is by no means a bad thing, just not what I was looking for. What I can tell you is: This teacher here, Jeremiah, was extremely friendly. He immediately makes you feel very welcomed. He taught very informally - for example, he asked me to call him by his first name, and played pop music as we exercised (note: I arrived early and saw the end of kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, which appeared equally as informal). I'm not trying to say informality is a good or bad thing - I think it all depends on the person. I'm just describing my experience here. We did jumping jacks, jump ropes, and push ups. We worked in pairs and punched each others hands as we held up protective gear. It was fun! But again, what I did focused on speed and exercising different parts of the body, instead of focusing on things like effective punching techniques. I was paired with different people at different times. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. By the end, we all worked up a good sweat. I know virtually nothing about how this place teaches fighting techniques. But if you want a good cardio workout, this really did seem like a an effective and friendly place. If I was looking for a regular cardio workout, I would have stayed here!

The first session was simply a conversation with the trainer solely for the purposes of learning what was important to me so they could tailor not just the workouts, but also ways to help me feel inspired as a whole person. That made me feel so special. The trainers were sure to respect and be mindful of what could seemingly be small details but were important me. That for me is priceless! The physical space itself is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! It was designed with so much intentionality that it made the workout sessions even more enjoyable. The small group sessions are lovely. They aren't overstimulating and that was key for me. Every workout session left me feeling inspired, encouraged and renewed not just physically but mentally & emotionally. Lastly, Dani, the owner and founder, is an absolute PLEASURE to do business with and her passion for mind and body fitness is evident. She wants every client to get what they need to feel empowered. She makes herself accessible and easy to communicate with either by phone, email or text. As a nurse leader, I am deeply appreciative of what she has created at Very Personal Training and will continue to do support her business not only with my own personal training but also with group training events that I will host for my clinical team and friends. This place is truly one of a kind!
