I used to listen to a lot of 790 The Zone (WQXI AM) back in the day: https://www.yelp.com/biz/wqxi-am-sports-talk-790-the-zone-atlanta. 790 The Zone's downfall coincided with the rise of 92.9 The Game, so the transition from 790 to 92.9 was easy for me. Today, WQXI is a Korean radio station. I've never been a fan of 680 The Fan (WCNN AM, simulcast on 93.7 FM) though I do tune into 680 to listen to Georgia Tech football and basketball broadcasts.
When 92.9 The Game first launched, I was impressed with a couple of things: (1) The sound quality. Wow. What a big difference from 790 AM it was. (2) 24/7 local programming. I'm not sure if the latter is true anymore, but when 92.9 The Game first hit the scene, they had local talent on air around the clock. At the time, I hadn't known a sports radio station to do that.
In the early days of 92.9 The Game, I listened to The Morning Show with Randy Cross, Jason Bailey, and Kristen Ledlow. In 2014, Ledlow left 92.9 The Game. Since then, sports fans know Ledlow from her appearances on NBA broadcasts (TNT, NBA TV) and as co-host of NBA Inside Stuff. These days, I still listen to The Morning Show, now with John Fricke and Hugh Douglas. It's the show I listen to the most on 92.9. It's on weekdays, 6am-10am.
My favorite personality at 92.9 is Mike Bell. He was one of my favorites at 790. He's old-school and funny. He's on in the afternoons with Carl Dukes on their show Dukes & Bell (weekdays, 2pm-7pm).
I occasionally listen to weekend morning host Sam Crenshaw. He used to be the sports anchor on the CBS affiliate (WFMY-TV) where I grew up. I remember when he came to talk to us at our middle school in High Point, North Carolina. He's been in Atlanta since 1998.
92.9 is home of the Falcons, Hawks, and Atlanta United. I enjoy the extensive Falcons and Hawks coverage and, as a basketball fan, wished they covered the NBA more. It would be nice if they discussed Georgia Tech football and basketball more, but I understand they have to cater to what most of their listeners want to hear. More golf coverage would be nice too.
One of my favorite parts of The Morning Show was listening to weekly interviews/updates with former Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer, current Hawks GM Travis Schlenk, and current Falcons coach Dan Quinn.
I don't listen to 92.9 The Game as much as I used to. Instead, I opt for podcasts which have more focused discussion, higher-quality content, and less ads. That said, I still listen to 92.9 regularly and still rely on it as a source for sports news and weekday morning entertainment when I get ready for work.
