I sent in my Nikon D750 for a shutter replacement. They had run out of replacement shutters, but…read morestill took the camera and quoted £248+VAT for the service, including return delivery (verified in advance over the phone). I posted in the camera for about £7-8 insured delivery from memory. I then waited over 4 months for the service, and they charged an extra £15 for delivery. Disappointing, especially after (a) specifically asking for an all-in quotation and (b) waiting over a third of a year for the service to be completed with what should surely be a standard item they should always have in stock

Not only should children stay clear of my cherished DSLR but so should my Mum…read more.. Upon arriving at my Dad's birthday dinner, I realised my mum had decided to bring my camera along and had also accidentally smashed the screen into pieces on the way. Needless to say I wasn't in a celebratory mood and felt like shedding some tears into my minestrone starter and to be fair I'm sure Mags (the culprit) did too. Since I work in town this place was the most convenient so I set off on lunch to find out the damage to my camera and my... no actually Mags' purse. The staff were great. My camera was taken through the back and two minutes later I was told the LCD screen looked fine, it was just the glass protector that was ruined and would I mind if they removed it then and there. Feeling like a bit of a drama queen from the night before, but also like doing a dance at the same time, I agreed. Another two minutes went by and my camera was handed back to me looking good as new and I was told I'd be able to buy a glass protector online and reattach it myself. Although a short and sweet service the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Having been in the business for over 40 years I would definitely trust them with my camera should anything happen again. But since Mags is only allowed to use a disposable camera for the foreseeable future, it shouldn't. Love you really Mum :)

As a keen amateur photographer, I've become very familiar with Snappy Snaps on Byres Road…read more Their main custom is in developing photos from digital and film however they offer many other services: they take passport photos, they will put your photos onto mugs, bags and the likes, they will restore old damaged photos, they will put your photo on a big canvas and can even make it look Andy-Warhol esq. They also have a small selection of photo albums and photo frames. The small shop can sometimes get busy however the staff are friendly, efficient, and seem to know their stuff. If like me you struggle with their 'do it yourself' developing machines (ok, I know most people don't, but for the less techo-savy of us), they will happily assist you. My only complaints are that the company should consider changing its hideous green and yellow colour scheme and that they should have better advertised their 10% student discount; after spending a fair bit of moula in this shop over the last couple of years, I've only just recently noticed the 10% Student Discount sign (I've just graduated!).

I needed to have a few US sized passport photos taken and I wasn't sure where I was going to get…read morethis type of picture taken. After googling, I realised Snappy Snaps is just around the corner from my Uni, so I was able to pop in in between classes and have these pictures taken. The process was pretty simple and pain free- all in it took about 5 minutes to process, I paid and I was on my way. The staff were super friendly and packaged my wee pictures in a take away holder and I was off. I'm not exactly sure how much passport photos cost- but I was ok with paying £9.99 as I now know I won't be knocked back by the American Embassy in London for having the wrong sized photos. Hooray! I recommend this place for all your passport picture needs.

They used to be more of an Argos-style store with catalogue ordering and take-your-form-to-the-counter service, but some years ago they began opening larger stores with a great selection of budget consumer electronics on display. They're great if you're looking for extension cords, phones and accessories, computer bits and bobs, and obscure branded electronic thingamibobs. They're especially good around Xmas as they always have some bizarre electronic toy that's just perfect for your 8-year-old nephew or the other geek in your life. Sometimes they don't have the item you want in store (as happened to me today), but they're more than happy to order it up for you and it will be delivered to your home at no extra charge. I do find them a bit overpowering sometimes as they always seem to have a surfeit of staff who hover around you asking if they can assist every couple of minutes, which wears thin very quickly with me, especially as this is the kind of shop I like to circumambulate several times whilst waiting for inspiration to strike if I've got a particular project in mind but I'm not sure what I need (which is most of the time when I'm in here!)

From buying CDs for burning, to rewiring my speakers, they've been kind enough to share their know-how all over the shop (literally). You can get everything you want electronically here - even from batteries to welders, and when you can't find it - guess who'll come to the rescue? That's right, the maplin employees! Everyone loves a Maplin Employee...
