Oh what to say about the Elsie J! What an amazing time! It's a beautiful mix of history, fun and stunning views. My family booked a private sunset cruise on the Elsie J. We had Captain Bob and Ray as our crew. They were so incredibly kind. Half of my family stayed down on the lower half while a few of us went up on the top of the deck. Captain Bob answered all of my questions and was happy to share the history of the boat. It was amazing views the whole time. I cannot recommend the Elsie J enough! My wife and I celebrated our 44th anniversary with a sunset charter. Captain Bob and Dan made us feel right at home onboard the Elsie J. He showed us the engine, the wheelhouse, and allowed my wife to sound the horn of our departure. Captain Bob was very hospitable answering our questions and asking his own of us. The captain and crew were so friendly and engaging. They really seemed to enjoy just being out on the water. They took great care to make sure that my wife and I were comfortable and enjoying our trip. The owner and captain, Robert Jensen, took great pride in this eighty years old vessel and gave us a rich family history of the Elsie J and how his family used it through the years. We LOVED our time out on the Elsie J while in South Haven. It is such a neat vessel to get to spend time on, which includes so much history and stories. Bob makes it a fun experience letting you watch the engine start up, blow the horn, and stand on the rooftop while sailing. He is full of so much knowledge and is so thoughtful about each aspect of these charters. Along with Bob was his assistant Ray who was absolutely the most genuine person with great conversation, knowledge about the water & boats, and phenomenal restaurant recommendations. We absolutely loved getting to talk to him during the excursion. While on the excursion, we were able to see the most gorgeous sunset and really experience a great time out on the lake. If you have some time to take a ride with them, I cannot recommend it enough! We have all talked about it since getting off of the boat and consider this a core memory of this trip! read more

We got lucky and were the only family booked for a cruise - 7 of us. It was perfect, I feel like a few more more would have felt too crowded. Captain Bob clearly loves what he does and his crew couldn't have been nicer. They let us see the engine room (very cool for anyone interested in antique boats/engines) and let our 3 kids take the wheel for a portion of the trip. The only caution I would give is that it might be difficult for anyone with physical limitations to get up to the top deck, which is a ladder up through a port hole. Our 4 year old needed a fair amount of help but we made it work and the view and breeze from the top couldn't be beat. There is a lower deck that can be walked right into from the dock, it just has a more limited view. We had a really nice time and I can't recommend them more for a relaxing trip out on the water. read more

Ok, so the boat is a little old (1940-something I think) and scary-looking, but the Jensens are extremely nice and friendly and made the cruise very pleasurable. Captain Bob of the Elsie J was a wonderful host for our college reunion trip. The boat was perfect for our group, the upper deck for sun, and the lower for shade. We enjoyed a delightful sunset cruise on the Elsie J. while vacationing in South Haven. Bob and Kathy were gracious hosts and welcomed us onboard. The Elsie J. is a treasured fishing tug that has been in Captain Bob's family for three generations and you can tell he takes great pride in taking it out on the lake with his guests. Kathy shared the family history and some history of Great Lakes' fishing. It was facinating. Everything is very casual and we were made to feel most welcome. The cruise lasts about an hour and a quarter and gave us a wonderful vantage point to watch the sun dip below the horizon. Highly recommended! read more
