Its nearest cousin is the Croque Madame only more gluttonous with multiple kinds of meat and an excess of melted cheese. Bourdain went to O Afonso to try his first Francesinha when he visited Porto. However, current consensus motivated us to come here after we watched more recent YouTube travel videos from Jamie Oliver and others. This looked like a more classic, retro-style diner like Mel's Drive-In, but there was no mistaking what everyone was ordering here whether they were tourists or locals. Tables were pretty snug, but we managed to squeeze ourselves in against the wall. We knew we had to get the 13,2€ Francesinha Santiago because it was the classic rendition (Photo 8). Fortunately they allowed us to share an order because our tablemates let us know other places around town don't allow you to do that. It was quite a sight with the fried egg on top of a monstrous sandwich covered by multiple, overlapping slices of a Portuguese cheese called queijo flamengo. The sandwich itself consisted of two thick slices of white bread toasted to golden brown. Inside was Portuguese wet-cured ham, bologna, grilled sirloin steak, fresh sausage, linguiça, and mortadella. It was all doused with their house francesinha sauce made of beef gravy, tomato paste, onion, garlic, piri piri chiles, beer, brandy, and port wine. A pile of fries surrounded the sandwich (Photo 10). Wow, I just spent two paragraphs describing the francesinha and didn't mention whether I liked it or not. I did - but I also realized it was one-and-done for me. We managed to have a couple of the 2,7€ bowls of soup. Jamie had the Caldo Verde (Spinach Soup) (Photo 9), and I had the Canja de Galinha (Chicken Soup) (Photo 7). Both were satisfying, and mine had orzo. Yes, that was enough food. Jamie ordered the 10€ Cheesecake with Red Fruits. It was a nice, creamy slice ladled with a compote-like coulis of blueberries and red currants (Photo 9). It was accompanied by a glass of Porto Quinta do Noval LBV, a scintillating port that fed into his new addiction (Photo 7). I decided to try their signature 10€ French Toast Majestic Style made distinctive by its decadent egg-custard cream sauce. The flavorful bread slice sat in a shallow pool of maple syrup and sprinkled with pine nuts, walnuts, and raisins (Photo 10). Instead of a port pairing, I ordered the 7€ Cafe au Lait which balanced well with the French toast (Photo 8). I really think the Belle Epoque decor complemented our digestion because this was the gathering spot for Porto's elite. For a few moments, we were part of it. The neighborhood near the Marques metro station is a good one to stay in, with a pleasant downhill walk to the main sights, and a direct subway ride back. Francesinha Cafe cements this as a great place to visit. The physical space was a couple of notches nicer than I expected a sandwich joint to be - it turned out to be a very nice little restaurant with a limited menu. We weren't sure if we should split a sandwich and fries between two people - it turned out that a whole sandwich each, and splitting an order of fries worked out well for us. Porto is a terrific place to visit, and the Francesinha is the icing on the cake.

They also make a pretty decent black bean burger for all you vegetarians. The only place they fall short is the french fries. We've been trying to get them to cook the fries just a little bit longer so they would be a little bit crispier. But we don't go there for the fries. It's the burger that stands out. Oh yes, how can I forget a perfect glass of sangria. They also do it right. Service has always been good, but we also choose to tip accordingly.
